The Commish

Well the first holiday of the holiday season has passed and the ol' commish is wiped out from the considerable cooking and eating that I did over the long weekend. Generally I'd ask if there is anything more blissful than watching football on the Thanksgiving but this year both games were truly horrendous.

I mean that Detroit game took FOREEEEEVER to complete. I could cook my turkey to that game...

1. Set oven to 400 degrees
2. Insert Turkey
3. Remove at the 2 minute warning

Please do not make football as difficult to watch on television as baseball. The reason I have become a bigger football fan than I ever was at baseball is because the game is fun to watch on TV. If I have to stay up to midnight or beyond to listen to Dennis Miller rant n rave then I just am not that interested.

I think that is the general malaise that I am going through right now. The holiday's are upon us and basketball has started so it's a little more difficult to keep the interest level up right now. But for those of you headed to the play-offs you need to find that burst of energy that will keep you tuned in and zoned right on the cutting edge of the football season. I would guess that for most leagues this is the last week of the regular season. I know in most all of the leagues I participate in that is the case. The play-offs are curse for some. If you have a really powerful team then you will consider your season a failure if you don't win the play-offs. If your team barely made the play-offs and you lose early then you're really just ruining your draft order for next season. On the other hand if you win the play-offs then it was a great year.

I know there are leagues that don't even have a monetary pay-off and if the league members are cool with that then fine. But I spend a lot of money on the league and I want to have a chance to win it back at the end of the year.

Here are some ideas that your league can use to liven things up and make sure everyone is around till the bitter end.

  1. Let everyone in the play-offs
One of the leagues that I am in let's everybody in the play-offs, this is the first year I have participated in this league so the jury is still out for me. The theory is good though. No matter how bad your team is you still have a chance to win the big money at the end of the year. I guarantee everybody turns in a line-up.

  2. Have a toilet bowl tourney
This is the way most of the leagues I participate in handle it. The top 4, 5, 6, or 7 teams get in the main tourney while everyone else fights it out in the toilet bowl. The winner of the toilet bowl gets his or her entry fee back and a middle of the draft draft pick in the dynasty/keeper version of the tournament. In one league the winner also gets a toilet seat with the names of all of the previous winners.

  3. Pay-out for more than the winner
If the entry fee is great enough, then do what one of my leagues does. Have a high point bonus… the highest score of the week wins $15. You can also pay for the best overall record, highest total points, division winners and booby prizes like worst team lowest scores and so forth.

  4. Give a trophy
In the leagues I run we provide two trophies to the overall tourney champion. One for the champion to keep (a miniature Heisman type trophy) and a traveling plaque that has the names of all of the previous winners etched upon it.
These are just a few things you can do as a commissioner to keep the interest strong all season long.

Here is this week's recipe.

» A small (4 1/2-cup serving size) box of instant chocolate pudding
» 1/4 cup oil

» 1/2 cup sour cream
» 4 eggs
» 12 oz. chocolate, semi sweet chips
DIRECTIONS: Mix ingredients, in order. Pour into greased Bundt pan. Cook at 350 for 55 minutes. Cool 15 minutes and remove from pan. Believe me, frosting is not necessary with this cake.
