Welcome to another edition of the Commish's Cuisine! The playoffs
have started in all fantasy leagues by now and will soon be here
for the NFL. I have a theory that I'd like to test and I'll need
your help to make it work.
I think that there are common ties between teams that win the Super
Bowl in your fantasy league and teams in my fantasy league that
win the Super Bowl. I want to do a semi-scientific survey of what
it takes to win the super bowl. Here is my theory.
Certain players can provide you a winning edge in the playoffs and
league play in general. Do most teams that have Kurt Warner win
the Super Bowl? This is what I'd like you to do. Send me your league's
super bowl winning roster and any key information (major trades
and acquisitions) plus your scoring system (please let it be close
to 1pt for 10 yards rushing, receiving, 1pt for 20 yards passing,
6pts for rushing tds and receiving tds and 4pts for passing tds
any other categories just let me know when you turn in the roster)
and I will compile all of that info into a spreadsheet and see what
it spits out.
Ultimately what I would like to do is be able to say these are the
quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, kickers
and so forth that Super Bowl teams had on their rosters in order
to win. Then I can give you the 1, 2 or 3 players you had to have
to win it all. This way we can grade our drafts and rosters to see
if it was coaching or dumb luck that kept us out of the money. I
hope to have this study done by January so send
in those rosters soon.
Now on to another subject, one of the many requests that I receive
throughout the season is help with rules interpretation. I feel
like the fantasy football supreme court sometimes... people always
asking me what rules their league should adopt. I thought I'd run
down some basic tie-breakers so that you can get gist of what my
leagues do.
- Total Points
Basically which teams has scored the most points.
- Head to Head
In head to head competition who has beaten who?
- Division record
If the tie is in the division this is the first thing I look
at.
- Points Against
Who has the fewest points scored against them.
- Longest scoring play
In my performance league my first round playoff game was tied.
The commish broke it by looking to see which team had the longest
scoring play... Warrick Dunn's 70-yarder came in handy.
- Bench Scoring
Whose bench scored the most.
- Pre-determined player
Some leagues make you choose a player (sometimes only from your
bench) as your tie breaker before the game.
- Total Score
Some leagues make you turn in the combined final score of the
Monday night game as the tie-breaker.
- Flip a coin
This is what you have to do if your league hasn't hammered out
it's tie-breaking procedure beforehand so document which ever
system you want to use.
Here is this week's recipe.

Prepare this in a
big, colorful casserole that can go straight from the
oven to the table. Sautéed or boiled green beans would
be nice alongside; uncork a bottle of Chardonnay to
pour with dinner. |

DIRECTIONS:
Butter 4-quart oval baking dish. Place chicken breasts
in heavy large pot. Add just enough broth to cover chicken.
Bring broth to boil; reduce heat to low. Cover pot and
simmer until chicken is just cooked through, skimming
surface occasionally, about 20 minutes. Using tongs,
transfer chicken to plate and cool. Add carrots and
turnips to chicken broth in pot. Simmer uncovered until
vegetables are just tender, about 10 minutes. Using
slotted spoon, transfer vegetables to prepared baking
dish. Add turnip greens to broth and cook just until
wilted, about 1 minute. Using slotted spoon, transfer
greens to colander; drain well. Add to vegetables in
baking dish.
Strain broth; reserve 4 cups. Remove skin and bones
from chicken. Cut meat into 1/2- to 3/4-inch pieces.
Add chicken to vegetables in baking dish.
Melt butter in same pot over medium heat. Add leeks,
shallots and thyme. Sauté until tender, about 8 minutes.
Add flour and stir 2 minutes. Stir in 4 cups broth and
white wine. Increase heat to high and bring to boil,
stirring constantly. Add cream and boil until sauce
thickens enough to coat spoon, whisking frequently,
about 6 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Pour gravy
over mixture in dish. Stir to blend. Cool 45 minutes.
(Filling can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)
Position 1 rack in top third of oven and place baking
sheet on bottom rack in oven; preheat to 400°F. Roll
out crust dough on parchment paper to 15x10 1/2-inch
rectangle. Using paper as aid, turn dough over onto
filling. Trim dough overhang; tuck dough edge inside
dish. Roll out dough scraps to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut
out leaf shapes. Brush bottom of cutouts with water
and place on crust; cut slits in crust to allow steam
to escape.
Place pot pie on top rack and bake until crust is golden
and gravy is bubbling, about 50 minutes. Let stand 10
minutes before serving.
Makes 8 servings. |
