For those of you that were expecting my newest article and were
sadly missing it last week, thank you. For those of you that didn't
notice, thanks for nothin'.
I was in Las Vegas last week rubbing shoulders with the big boys.
I was at AAPEX/SEMA, the largest aftermarket trade show for the
automotive industry. I got to speak with numerous NASCAR drivers,
owners, and television commentators on their sport and even a former
NFL coach. I spoke with Ricky Rudd, Richard Petty, Robert Yates,
Dale Jarrett, Jeremy Mayfield, Benny Parsons and even Wayne Fontes.
It was pretty neat and all but I missed my football fix.
I love Vegas... this week. The next time I go and lose money I am
sure it won't be so cool. I hit a small triple parlay at the Mirage
sports book taking action on NBA games. I lost a little when the
Titans and Redskins went over 37 points. All in all I came out $20
ahead. While working the trade show I tried to keep my thumb on
the pulse of my fantasy football leagues.
Right now is the time for you to make your playoff push. Now more
than ever it is important to keep up with what is happening in your
league. This is the time of the year that a key pick-up, trade (if
your deadline hasn't passed, mine has) or win can propel you to
elite status. If you are already on the top of your league congratulations
and you can go away. If you are at the middle or bottom of the league
this article is for you.
Remember all of the work that you put into your draft and getting
ready for the season? You were working to be the top team in your
league and all of a sudden, like me, your dreams have come crashing
down around you. Well there is hope. You see, this is the part of
the season when owners get busy and forget to look at the news first
thing in the morning, they forget the transaction day, they forget
to turn in a line-up, they turn in a line-up full of injured running
backs. Now is when your diligence will pay off.
For instance in the last two weeks I have picked up, in different
leagues, the following players: Donald Hayes, Donovan McNabb (in
two leagues), Joe Germaine (Trent Greens back-up until Warner returns),
Trung Canidate (Marshall Faulk's back-up now).
Now is when you'll make your move. My players are starting to play
like I expected them to when I drafted them and I am starting to
get a couple of wins. I will make the play-offs in 3 of the 5 leagues
I am in and have an off chance for a 4th league and a snowball's
chance in the 5th. I'll keep pushing and you should too!
The playoff's for different leagues start on different dates. It's
a mixed bag between week 12,13,14, or 15. Plan to win out from here
on because for those of us at the bottom of the standings our play-offs
started back at week 7. Think of it as a long journey to the championship
where you have to keep pace staying in the race and you'll be fine.
Here is my recipe for success when in the middle to lower half of
the pack:
- Plan to win each week
- Keep up with injuries and get the back-up or replacement
- Make one-trade that if it pays off will make you look like
a genius (I traded Fred Taylor and Ricky Williams for Jerome
Bettis, Emmitt Smith, Derrick Mason and Jay Riemersma)
- Turn in a line-up every week
- Keep up the faith
See ya in the playoffs….and one other thing make sure you vote...
and make it a W, if you know what I mean.
