I hope your ready for a "meaty" article full of only the
choicest toppings and no preservatives. This week I turn the tables
on you. Not sure what I mean? Keep reading and it will become clear
my son.
It never fails, every morning I trudge into work press the on button
and listen to my computer whirrrr to life. After the requisite virus
screens and the bevy of shell programs load up I fire up my Microsoft
Outlook to check my mail. I'll have a few hundred and a couple will
actually be work related! The others go something like this…. "
I love your site, I was wondering if you could rate my draft" or
it'll go like this " I have my starting running backs and quarterbacks
but I was wondering whom I should start as my third receiver"? Don't
get me wrong, I love the mail because it makes me feel important.
However there are several things "wrong" with those examples.
First and foremost…. I don't run or own this site. The real owner
is Mike Krueger Please send
him the compliments and of course your complaints. I love the guys
that say… "Update your free damn site!" Uhh buddy take a 'lude and
settle down.
The second problem with the above example is that you're asking
me for help! Don't get me wrong, I have a pretty good sized ego
and I have had some success in the fantasy football circles and
I am pretty damn funny... but I am no professional. Just ask the
30 or so guys that kick my teeth in every year in one of my five
leagues. All that aside right now I am going to let you know who
I took in my last two drafts, and let you critique me.
As you probably figured out from the above statement, I participated
in two drafts over the weekend. One draft on Saturday that lasted
just under 3 hours for 12 rounds of 14 teams and the other draft
on Sunday that was about 2 ½ hours for 14 rounds, 12 teams.
The Saturday draft was for my local league that you have heard me
mention before. We have a quasi-keeper league that allows us to
keep three players from the previous year. Here are the players
kept from last season:

This was also the draft order (notice my team was second to last…runner
up in the Super Bowl, again).
Now things went pretty normal except team 6 was smoking dope or
something because he took both Patrick Jeffers and Cam Cleeland
who have been out for the year and rehabilitating their injuries
for almost a month now. Unfortunately for me, I went in with a list
of players I wanted and didn't get a single one! Has that ever happened
to you? It really sucks and I think I'd trade just about anyone
on my team right now. Don't get me wrong, I think I've got a good
team but not the one I envisioned. I also made a mistake… I took
too many running backs. In this league you can start either 1 qb,
2 rb, 2 wr, 1 te, 1 k, 1 d OR 1 qb, 1 rb, 3 wr, 1 te, 1 k
, 1 d. I had planned on getting more wide receivers and accidentally
took an extra running back.
Anyhow, here is my team. Remember, this is actually the 4th when
you consider everyone already had three players...

I think I did pretty well. Well enough to win my division if nothing
else. I'd love to hear your comments.
The entire league is being run on rotonews under the name "Madison
Fantasy Football" if you'd like to view it… I'll keep you up to
date on my season.
The second league that I drafted in was on Sunday and it was my
first year in this league. It's a performance league and I have
never played in one so it was a new experience for me. I drafted
8th and there is a limit on the number of players you can have at
each position. So drafting wisely is even more important in this
league. Besides that you can only make transactions every other
week and trade only two times all season.
As I said I had the 8th overall pick and I had a pretty easy decision.
Anyway I'll get to that. In this league you may draft: 2 qb, 3 rb,
5 wr or te, 2 k, 2 d. I think I had a pretty easy decision in round
one. For some reason, Fred Taylor fell to number 8. Now, I know
he is hurt and I can only have 3 rb's but please. 8th?
Here is my draft:

Again I feel pretty comfortable with this draft. I have a few of
the same players to make it easy to cheer for people on Sundays
and enough talent to really win a few games. Plus another bonus
in this league everybody makes the play-offs.
I have my final draft on Friday night and we don't know the draft
order till we get there. Really the draft that I have on Friday
is the most fun because they are mostly dolts and I take a lot of
their money!
Have a great first week of the season and I'll see you in two weeks.
Here is this weeks recipe and I promise NO KRAFT food products.
