The Commish

Hey all we have a winner of the last weeks name the column contest! Not only did the winner supply us with the winning name he added about 20 others in for good measure. It didn't hurt that he added that he was my number one fan. I am not sure how beat my momma out for that one but anyway… good work Ken Melton! Those Taylor-Made Golf Balls are on their way to you.

On the menu for this week, I want to show you commissioners a way to spice up a league that might be a bit to dull. It's a problem that every league runs into, especially those that have been existence for a while without many major changes. What can you do to breathe some life back into an old league? Well, beyond the things that I mentioned a few articles back like golf tournaments, parties and penalties, you can add a position or three to your weekly line-up. Now this isn't for everyone and unless you have some hard core guys it may not work for you. It takes a little extra work and I am certainly not an expert in this category. Add the linebackers, defensive lineman and defensive backs to your league. Those hard working, slobber knocking, real football players that these fantasy leagues so often ignore. To many people football is 3 yards and a cloud of dust. However, to me football is dislocated fingers, bitten off ears and noses and cheap shots to the groin during a pileup.

Before you go off and just add these guys to your league you have ask yourself if your league is ready and more importantly my little commishes, are you ready? It takes some groundwork to get a league ready for this kind of change. The allegiance on Survivor has nothing on the underhanded dealings that take place when trying to influence voting in a new rule like this.

1. Does your league software calculate the various categories necessary when using defensive players? Things like, tackles, assists, passes defended, fumbles recovered, and passes intercepted. If you use software already make sure it can calculate these categories. I had several people suggest a couple of programs to me two weeks ago after my article talking about fantasy football software. They were all great programs and looked sharp but I couldn't use them because they didn't calculate defensive player stats.

2. Is your league ready to study up on 6-8 new roster spots? Do the guys in your league do it strictly for fun or for blood. The fun guys will say it's too much effort and eventually will leave the group. The blood guys will say let's add offensive lineman. Be ready for either circumstance.

3. Where do you get your stats? Unfortunately the NFL doesn't consider the tackle an official stat. If you go their website you'll see stats for every player under tackles but the league depends on each team to turn in weekly tackle stats. Are you ready for changes that might come up because of these stats being turned in by the teams and not the league?

4. Are you ready for an extra two or three hours at the draft? My dynasty league now has a continuous roster size of 28 players. We draft over the Internet and it took three weeks for the eight round defensive draft alone. Be ready to spend some extra time.

As I mentioned my dynasty league just added individual defensive players to our mix. Last year was our first year of the dynasty format and we all had between 13-18 players on our rosters prior to our defensive draft. Each team will start 3 players (on the low side for most leagues with defensive players) and can carry as many or few on their roster as they like. We used an independent draft to allocate the defensive players in the first year and starting next year will have our rookie/free agent draft in combination with the defensive players so that any owner may draft any position at any time.

O U R  S C O R I N G  S Y S T E M
LEAGUE TYPE
» 1 point for every 2 assists
» 1 point for every tackle
» 1 point for every pass defended
» 2 points for every sack
» 2 points for every fumble recovery
» 2 points for every interception
» 6 points for every fumble returned for td
» 6 points for every interception returned for td

The average defensive player will account for about 5 points per game. Each line-up now consists of 1 qb, 2 rb, 2 wr, 1 te, 1 k, 1 dl, 1 lb, 1 db or 1 qb, 1 rb, 3 wr, 1 te, 1 k , 1 dl, 1 lb, 1 db. It'll be very interesting. Below I have listed our draft as it went pick by pick. Let me know how you think I did.
