The BAWM - Week 1
9/5/02

No, not the pass that Randy Moss will be catching from Culpepper nearly every game, nor a new stat that I thought up while studying for my draft. The BAWM, not the BOMB, is the Best, Average, and Worst Match-ups for the week. Yeah I know, cheesy. But, every week for the rest of the season, I will attempt to give you these match-ups in a quick concise format in order for you to get the info you are looking for.

If I were able to predict the stats and exact outcomes of these games, I assure you, I would not be writing these articles, but rather, in Vegas racking in the dough. These are just educated picks based on weekly match-ups.

Always play your studs. These are just based on match-ups, so if a stud winds up in a bad match-up it doesn't mean you should sit him. It means don't necessarily expect his usual output.

Best

QB Donovan McNabb vs. Tennessee
Going against the worst ranked passing defense from a year ago along with a solid receiving corps should bring big numbers.

QB Brett Farve vs. Atlanta
Inconsistent defensive backs that gave up nearly 30 TD's last year will be ripe for the picking for the veteran.

RB Emmitt Smith vs. Houston
He wants that record; an expansion team in its first game may help his cause.

RB Anthony Thomas vs. Minnesota
Facing a defense that has 8 new starters may provide a perfect start to avoid a sophomore slump.

WR Chris Chambers vs. Detroit
The speedy wide out should feast on a defense that gave up nearly 27 points per game last season.

WR Keyshawn Johnson vs. New Orleans
The suspension of Dale Carter from the Saints and the addition of Keenan McCardell for the Bucs should provide Keyshawn with a chance to equal last years TD total in Game 1.

TE Kyle Brady vs. Indianapolis
Will be a welcome target for Brunell who has limited options with the loss of Keenan McCardell.

TE Todd Heap vs. Carolina
Could become a viable option for Redman in the red zone due to the lack of a go to guys in the receiving corps.

Average

QB Jay Fiedler vs. Detroit
While he may not have the best arm in the league, the addition of Ricky Williams along with promises of using the tight ends should give Fiedler some nice numbers this week.

QB Shane Matthews vs. Arizona
Spurrier has to love the fact that they face the Cards in their home opener.

QB William Green vs. Kansas City
Not a bad setting for the rookie's debut. Should stabilize his hold on the starting job after this week.

RB Curtis Martin vs. Buffalo
While they may have a decent secondary, the Bills lack a solid line and Martin could see many holes.

WR Todd Pinkston vs. Tennessee
Should have some nice looks along with the fact that he is fighting for his job with the addition of Freeman.

WR J.J. Stokes vs. N.Y. Giants
Being paired with a stud at the other receiving position can always lead to good things.

TE Alge Crumpler vs. Green Bay
Will be Vick's safety valve when the Pack breaks through the offensive line.

TE Shannon Sharpe vs. St. Louis
In what may be an all out offensive explosion, Sharpe should definitely get his share of catches back on the team that gave him his start.

Worst

QB Jake Plummer vs. Washington
While everyone focuses on the Skins' offense, it is there defense that could be more impressive.

QB Steve McNair vs. Philadelphia
The Eagles' defense should keep McNair running, but he probably won't get much in terms of passing yardage.

RB Michael Bennett vs. Chicago
He should improve upon last year's totals; however, he will have trouble this week and beyond as long as hyped rookie Bryant McKinnie remains unsigned.

RB Antowain Smith vs. Pittsburgh
Monday night's match-up should be entertaining, but could very well turn into a defensive battle leaving the Pats against last year's top- rated D.

WR Joe Horn vs. Tampa Bay
While he has become one of the most talented wide-outs in the game, he faces a tough challenge in Tampa this week.

WR Curtis Conway vs. Cincinnati
Yes, Cincinnati. What was once a rollover in terms of a squad looks to improve upon last year's defensive strength. The always-hobbled Conway may have a long day.

TE Wesley Walls vs. Baltimore
Baltimore has lost most of its glow after winning the Super Bowl, but Walls and the Panthers may have lots of trouble getting anything going.

TE Jay Riemersma vs. N.Y. Jets
This reliable tight end will be facing a speedy revamped defense that may limit his touches this week.
