Irv Smith likely out for the season, knee surgery

Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. underwent surgery to repair his meniscus Wednesday morning and is likely to miss the season based on the 4-5 month recovery timetable, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Smith was injured in the team's preseason finale at Kansas City on Friday. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Smith had some upside value in fantasy drafts this Summer after the departure of Kyle Rudolph, but can now be crossed off your cheatsheet. The Vikings worked a trade with the Jets yesterday to acquire the under-achieving Chris Herndon who needed a change of scenery. Even with Tyler Conklin (hamstring) likely to see a bump in targets, fantasy owners can avoid the Vikings TE position for now.
