2020 Outlook
Depth Chart
Despite starting the 2019 season playing some of the best football of his career under new coordinator Darrell Bevell, things cratered fast for Stafford and the Lions, as the Detroit captain missed his first games since 2010, and was eventually shelved for the season with broken bones in his back. With the head coach and general manager in the hot seat, and Stafford the focus of trade rumors this off-season, Stafford is clearly at a career crossroads in 2020.

Although nasty back injuries have hampered him the last two years, Stafford was dazzling for the first half of last season. His 25.9 FPts/G would have placed him in the top-3 at the position, and he was on pace for nearly 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns before going down. Looking comfortable in a new offense that uses the run game to open up shots down the field, Stafford utilized one of the best deep balls in the game to great success. His 8.6 yards-per-attempt was 2nd in the NFL to only Ryan Tannehill (Things I thought I would never read for 500 Alex).

With this unprecedented offseason, offenses with continuity in coaching staff and personnel will have a big advantage, and Stafford and the Lions have both. Golladay is a blossoming stud, Jones and Amendola are the vets, and last years' top-10 pick T.J. Hockensen should be a threat to be respected. Throw in dynamic rookie D'Andre Swift as a receiver out of the backfield and Stafford arguably has the best of playmakers he's ever been surrounded with. If the line can keep up their end of the bargain, this offense can and should score plenty of points. That's a good thing, because a defense that got torched by the pass replaced their All-Pro corner with a rookie.

I can't imagine a world where this offense stays relatively healthy and doesn't score close to 30 points per game. Stafford is going to have to overcome a defense that isn't going to stifle teams for four quarters and has the talent at the skill positions to not have to play superman. As far as QB1 value goes, there won't be many better than Stafford.

News From The Past 90 Days
Eagles expected to trade Carson Wentz
Could happen as early as this week
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Feb 6, 3:15 pm

Philadelphia Eagles
Eagles are expected to trade Carson Wentz in the coming days in what would be the latest blockbuster QB deal to rock the NFL, sources tell @mortreport and me. The most pertinent questions now become where, when and for what. But it could happen as early as this week. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Schefter indicates that the Eagles are looking for a "Matthew Stafford package" in return for Wentz. The Rams gave up a third round and two first round picks for Stafford. The Colts and Bears have expressed some interest in Wentz who has a $10 million roster bonus due on March 20th. Should Wentz be traded, this would lock in Jalen Hurts as the Eagles starter in 2021. Stay tuned...

Saints want Jameis Winston back
Sean Payton indicates they'll make a run at Winston in free agency
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Feb 3, 9:30 am

New Orleans
#Saints coach Sean Payton makes clear the team wants Jameis Winston back. They didn’t call on new #Rams QB Matthew Stafford, another potential vote of confidence for his current QBs. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Winston is a free agent but Sean Peyton indicated on Good Morning Football that they will pursue the 27 year-old quarterback. Winston did not start any games for the Saints in 2020 despite Drew Brees missing four games with a rib injury. Taysom Hill will be in the mix but there's a real chance Winston could be the Saints starter in 2021.

Lions ship Matthew Stafford to the Rams
Lions Get Goff and two first-round picks
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Jan 30, 11:30 pm

Detroit Lions
More on the first - but not the last - major QB moves of 2021: Matthew Stafford to the Rams in exchange for Jared Goff, a 2021 third-round pick, and 2022 and 2023 first-round picks: (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Our first big move of the off-season is a blockbuster. The price seems steep for the 32 year-old quarterback but getting rid of Goff's contract was going to come at a high price. The Lions are in a rebuilding mode and this move doesn't bode well for the fantasy prospects of Kenny Golladay. However, Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and Cam Akers will be valuable targets in 2021 redraft leagues.

Lions looking to trade Matthew Stafford
QB approached Detroit staff about potential trade
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Jan 23, 6:09 pm

Detroit Lions
Sources: The #Lions and Matthew Stafford have mutually agreed to part ways this offseason and the team will begin exploring trade options in the coming weeks for their star QB. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Stafford reportedly approached the Lions about a trade at the end of the season. New GM Brad Holmes and HC Dan Campbell were aware that Stafford could be traded this off-season before their hiring. There are a number of teams who will be looking for QB help this offseason (SF, WAS, IND, NYJ, DEN) so it seems likely this move will happen at some point. The Lions currently have the 7th pick in this year's draft.

Injury Matthew Stafford trending towards playing
Rib injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Dec 19, 11:43 am

Detroit Lions
In a dramatic turn, #Lions QB Matthew Stafford (ribs) is now preparing to play tomorrow vs the #Titans, sources say. What seemed improbable early on should be reality tomorrow. It’s why no one ever wants to rule him out... (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Stafford got in some practice time yesterday so him gutting it out with injured ribs was always a possibility. His presence would help the Lions offense as a whole, making Marvin Jones, T.J. Hockenson and D'Andre Swift more palatable for fantasy owners.

Injury Stafford's status is in doubt for Week 15
Rib injury
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Dec 14, 3:18 pm

Detroit Lions
#Lions QB Matthew Stafford’s status is in doubt for Sunday against the #Titans, but he hasn’t been ruled out yet, per me and @TomPelissero. Stafford is tough and has played through a lot, but he was in a ton of pain last night after his rib injury. Chase Daniel would step in. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Stafford (ribs) was banged up going into Week 14 now it looks like we may get some Chase Daniel action in Week 15 against a suspect Titans defense. Even so, Daniel would be a risky QB2 given his lack of big play ability coupled with Kenny Golladay remaining on the sidelines.

Injury D’Andre Swift expected to play
Illness
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 13, 7:00 am

Detroit Lions
Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford (right thumb) and RB D’Andre Swift (illness), each listed as questionable for Sunday, both are expected to play against the Packers, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It remains to be seen how big of a role Swift will have but it sounds like he should be close to a full-go making him a viable RB2 option against the Packers in Week 14. Swift received 21 touches in Week 10 against Washington.
