2019 Outlook
Depth Chart
After finishing as the top-scoring fantasy running back in each of the past two seasons, there is no question that Todd Gurley is one of the absolute top fantasy players we've ever seen in this sport. Unfortunately, all good things must eventually come to an end and that may be on the verge of happening this season for the 2017 NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

Gurley's chronic knee issue led to the superstar back sitting in weeks 15, 16 and 17 of the 2018 regular season. This, many believed, was a plan by the Rams coaching staff to make sure that their tailback would be ready to play in the playoffs. The Rams had a bye week in the playoffs which meant that Gurley had a full month off prior to Los Angeles' divisional round playoff game against the Cowboys when he ran the ball 16 times for 115 yards and a touchdown against one of the league's best defenses. Unfortunately that game may have finally been the demise of Gurley's surgically repaired left knee, as the back would touch the ball just 16 times for 47 total yards in the NFC Championship and Super Bowl while taking a backseat to plodding veteran running back C.J. Anderson.

While Anderson is now in Detroit which could mean less confidence in the rest of the backfield, we still have to be very concerned that Gurley's body just can no longer physically hold up to the wear and tear of a full workload in the NFL. That concern has pushed the once-considered top overall fantasy player down draft boards, all the way to an ADP just outside the first round in most leagues.

Reports out of Rams camp are that Gurley has not suffered "any sort of setbacks" with his knee this offseason and we know that he can be a dominant producer when on the field, so the upside is certainly still there for him to produce high-end RB1 numbers once again this season. The risk, however, is that Gurley's knee problems flare up once again and we're left every week wondering if he's going to play a full snap share or be limited to just a few series. That volatility, even more so than the player simply being declared "out," can derail a fantasy team very quickly and that's why Gurley is a risk that fantasy owners have to be comfortable with if they're going to select him in drafts.

Darrell Henderson's role defined?
May be used like Chris Thompson
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 29, 8:55 pm

Rams feel good about Todd Gurley + RB depth. I’d wager Malcolm Brown & Darrell Henderson combine for 35% (or more) of RB snaps. Henderson is very interesting. Plan is for him to be a Chris Thompson type. Thompson’s 2016 #Redskins film under McVay was a flexible mismatch role. (Yahoo! Sports - Charles Robinson)

FFToday's Take: It's informed speculation from Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson, not a direct quote from HC Sean McVay. Nevertheless, the Rams have said all along they see Henderson as a "change-of-pace" back. If the rookie is used like Thompson, he'll certainly have flex value. The more interesting assertion Robinson makes is about Brown and Henderson taking 35 percent of the snaps. The beauty of this "plan" is Gurley could still easily finish as a top 10 fantasy back.

Injury Todd Gurley speaks on knee issues
"Once the season comes, you gonna see what happens"
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jul 10, 8:15 am

Any discussion about the Los Angeles Rams' 2019 outlook starts with a question about Todd Gurley's knee. "It's good, man. It's good," Gurley said of his knee. "I'm just like, hey, we're going to find out in training camp, you know? Once training camp comes, you've got the preseason, but you don't have a lot in preseason. I know it's always been a lot of talk going on this whole offseason, so it's just like, hey, it's the offseason. That's what everything is supposed to be about: speculation and reporting. Once the season comes, you gonna see what happens." (NFL.com)

FFToday's Take: Gurley didn't participate in the off-season program and the Rams have a plan for managing his reps during camp. The Rams have indicated by their actions during the off-season that Gurley may share more of the workload in 2019 than he has in the past. That being said, he's still RB1 worthy unless we learn his knee issue is more severe than anticipated.

Injury "Arthritic component" in Todd Gurley's knee
Trainer confirms previous reports, insists "not one thing has changed"
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jun 17, 7:30 pm

Todd Gurley is dealing with arthritis in his knee after months of speculation, according to Travelle Gaines, who has trained Gurley for three years. Gaines suggested "not one thing has changed" in regards to his client and that "our routine has worked, he's been strong, he's been in great shape, he's done well." Gaines went on to say the decision this offseason to have Gurley drop six pounds and trim his body fat from 10 percent to seven was not due to injuries and more to accentuate his speed. The trainer also said "it's never been told to me" that the Rams plan on decreasing Gurley's workload come Week 1. (Yahoo! Sports)

FFToday's Take: This news is sure to sink Gurley's ADP a bit more, but should it? Many owners have decided to take the arrival of Darrell Henderson as a sign the Rams are preparing for the worst. However, there's been no indication from the Rams that Henderson will be anything more than a change-of-pace back. It's worth wondering how Gurley has embarked on such a rigorous training program if his knee isn't in decent shape. Gurley still seems worth the risk in drafts, especially if he is still on the board in the early part of the second round.
