2019 Outlook
Depth Chart
While many look at David Johnson's 2018 season as a bust, it should be a cautionary tale of not overvaluing players - even good players - who are in bad offenses. Even while "busting" in a way, Johnson still delivered a top-10 fantasy finish on the season in 2018. He just did it without anywhere near as many big games as we had hoped for, which often made it feel like he wasn't much of a difference-maker. The raw numbers weren't anything special, but Johnson still displayed tremendous physical skill on the field which should give us some optimism heading into 2019.

Johnson will go from one of the league's worst offensive schemes for fantasy production in 2018 to potentially one of the best in 2019, especially given that he'll be playing alongside new quarterback Kyler Murray. We've seen it countless times throughout the league that an agile quarterback might end up taking some carries from his running back, but his mere presence on the field makes defenses hesitate prior to engaging on handoffs to the back. Murray should do this for Johnson, which should help open up running lanes. The offensive line woes are still a concern, but Johnson should have more room to run in a much better, more explosive, higher-paced offense.

Johnson is locked in as a top 10 overall fantasy draft pick but some fantasy owners have completely sworn him off due to a disappointing 2018 season. Don't be that guy in your draft room. If you miss out on the top-tier of backs, there's no shame in selecting Johnson, who we're almost certain will produce RB1 fantasy numbers if he can stay healthy.

Injury David Johnson says he's playing Sunday
Ankle injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 6, 3:43 pm

Arizona Cardinals
RB David Johnson (ankle) on his availability for Sunday against the Buccaneers: "I'm definitely playing. I'm good, ready to go." (Kyle Odegard on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Last time we saw David Johnson on the field, it was Week 7 for one play against the Giants. It remains to be seen how much playing time he'll cede to newly acquired Kenyan Drake who popped off for 162 total yards and 1 TD in Week 9 against the 49ers. With Chase Edmonds expected to be sidelined, DJ and Drake should handle all of the RB duties.

Injury Chase Edmonds out, expect RBBC for Cardinals
Avoid Cardinals RBs
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 30, 3:48 pm

Arizona Cardinals
Chase Edmonds won’t play. David Johnson is “still working through it,” Kingsbury said. Regardless it’ll be “running back by committee.” Alfred Morris will be active. (Darren Urban on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It doesn't sounds like DJ (ankle) is going to play leaving newly acquired Kenyan Drake, Zach Zenner and Alfred Morris to handle the rushing duties in Week 9 against the 49ers. This is a good spot to avoid for fantasy owners.

Miami trades Kenyan Drake to Arizona
MIA receives conditional 2020 draft pick
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Oct 28, 9:58 am

Miami Dolphins
Trade: Arizona has reached agreement in principle to trade a conditional 2020 draft pick to Miami for RB Kenyan Drake, league sources tell ESPN. Arizona lost RB Chase Edmonds to a hamstring injury Sunday, already had RB David Johnson dealing with an ankle injury that is expected to sideline him this week and now will add RB Kenyan Drake, who could be in line for significant work Thursday night vs. San Francisco. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With the Cardinals banged up at running back, Drake could get thrown right into the fire against the stout 49ers defense on Thursday night. This move isn't a good sign for the health of David Johnson or Chase Edmonds. This transaction also elevates Mark Walton in Miami although his team situation caps his value as a weekly Flex play.

Injury Chase Edmonds iffy for Thursday night
Hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Oct 28, 7:00 am

Arizona Cardinals
Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury said there's "definitely concern" that running back Chase Edmonds might not play Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers after leaving Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints with a hamstring injury. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: With David Johnson (ankle, back) not expected to play, the Cardinals may be down to Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner at running back against the 49ers. Not good. Zenner is more likely to be involved in the passing game, making him the best fantasy RB option in Week 9.

Injury David Johnson expected to miss Wk 8 and Wk 9
Cardinals play Thursday night in Week 9

Arizona Cardinals
Cardinals RB David Johnson won’t play Sunday against the Saints due to his ankle injury, per source. Johnson is expected to miss Sunday vs. Saints and Thursday night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Cardinals signed Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner earlier this week which was a good indication DJ was going to miss at least Week 8. Chase Edmonds will continue to operate as Arizona's lead back while DJ is out.

Injury DJ, Kirk will be gametime decisions for Cardinals
Johnson missed practice all week
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 25, 5:00 pm

Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals hope to have running back David Johnson (ankle) and wide receiver Christian Kirk (ankle). Johnson didn’t practice at all this week. Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury was not ruling out the possibility of having Johnson available. “He’s a tough guy,” Kingsbury said. “We’re hopeful, but we’ll see how he feels on Sunday.” (

FFToday's Take: Kingsbury said Johnson could play despite not having practiced all week. If he sits Chase Edmonds would assume a workhorse role. The teams signed Alfred Morris and Zach Zenner earlier in the week. Kirk was limited in practice this week and seems like the better bet to see the field.

Injury Ajayi, Spencer Ware will workout for Arizona
David Johnson gets one carry in Week 7
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Oct 21, 11:24 am

Arizona Cardinals
Free-agent RB Jay Ajayi is working out for the Cardinals on Tuesday, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Add Spencer Ware to the list of running backs that Arizona will workout tomorrow. This isn't the greatest news for David Johnson owners who saw their RB play all of one snap yesterday, ceding the rest of the backfield work to Chase Edmonds. It's safe to say Johnson is questionable at best for Week 8.

Injury David Johnson expected to play
Listed as questionable
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 19, 11:47 pm

Arizona Cardinals
Cardinals’ RB David Johnson, listed as questionable for today’s game against the Giants due to an ankle injury, is expected to play, per source. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Head coach Kliff Kingsbury made waves on Friday when he said that if the game were today, Johnson wouldn't play, but it sounds like it's all systems go for DJ in a prime matchup against the Giants. Chase Edmonds is a low-end flex option.

Injury David Johnson likely to play on Sunday
Gametime decision
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 11, 4:00 pm

Arizona Cardinals
Word is he's likely to play on Sunday but check back because if you start him in fantasy at 1p and then he doesn't play at 4p you'll be tweeting all kinds of vulgar things to me and then I'll feel really bad. I get it. (Mike Garafolo on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It sounds like David Johnson's back was OK today, but Sunday could be a different story. Fantasy owners should follow this situation closely as both Johnson and Chase Edmonds will be in play against a struggling Falcons defense.

Injury Christian Kirk practices Wednesday
David Johnson works with trainers
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 9, 1:42 pm

Arizona Cardinals
During open portion of Cardinals' practice today, WR Christian Kirk, CB Tramaine Brock and WR Damiere Byrd were participating. Looked like veteran days off for WR Larry Fitzgerald, DT Corey Peters and OLB Terrell Suggs. RB David Johnson was working with trainers on the side. (Bob McManaman on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Kirk and Byrd are expected to play this week in a juicy matchups against the Falcons defense. David Johnson's availability will be key for fantasy owners as backup Chase Edmonds could become a fantasy factor if Johnson (back) isn't able to suit up.

Injury David Johnson could miss Week 6?
Back tightness sidelined him for a bit in Week 5
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 7, 4:30 pm

Arizona Cardinals
Kingsbury said David Johnson will be monitored all week with his back tightness. Would not rule out that Johnson could miss Falcons game. Have to see how week goes. ( - Darren Urban)

FFToday's Take: Johnson was able to finish the game, so it doesn't seem like this is going to be that big of a deal. With that said, any back issue is worth keeping an eye on. Johnson's absence would thrust Chase Edmonds into low-end RB1 territory in Week 6 against an Atlanta defense that has actually kept running backs somewhat in check since Week 1 but is giving up a ton of volume.

Injury David Johnson avoids serious injury
Left Week 2 briefly with wrist issue
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 16, 5:05 pm

Arizona Cardinals
Kingsbury said RB David Johnson (wrist) is fine to play Sunday against the Panthers. (AZCardinals - Darren Urban)

FFToday's Take: The injury partially explains why Johnson saw only eight touches against the Ravens, although he saved his fantasy day with a touchdown. Things should start getting a bit easier for him moving forward, as he faces the Panthers, Bengals, Falcons and Giants in four of the next five games. Keep him locked into lineups.
