Is this the year when the wheels finally fall all the way off for Ezekiel Elliott? Many fantasy managers seem to think so as the former perennial first-round fantasy pick is now falling to the third and even fourth round in some drafts. It seems as though the late-season dropoff in his statistical output is still fresh in the minds of fantasy gamers, many of whom seem to be expecting that Tony Pollard will take over the backfield this season.
Elliott's statistical descent in 2021 saw him start the season averaging well over 5.0 yards per carry over the first month of the season, only to fall to 3.7 yards per carry over the remainder of the year. Dallas' ever-deteriorating offensive line certainly played a part in that, but we shouldn't expect that to be any better this season. The Cowboys lost both right tackle La'el Collins and left guard Connor Williams this offseason and while they did draft Tyler Smith in the first round of the NFL Draft, there's likely to be some growing pains along this offensive line here in 2022.
If you're looking for some positive outlooks on Elliott, consider that he battled through multiple injuries throughout the 2021 season, including a partially torn PCL early in the year, and was still able to start all 17 games. In fact, other than a suspension which saw him miss six games in his second season, Elliott has never missed more than one game in any season throughout his professional career. Major injuries are mostly unpredictable, but Elliott has shown us that he is more than willing to play through a ton of minor injuries that would knock most players out for multiple weeks. Having that type of reliable workhorse in your fantasy backfield is always nice, even if he's not the same guy who led the league in rushing earlier in his career.
While Pollard is almost certainly going to break into Elliott's workload, Elliott is still listed atop the depth chart and he's still likely to see a 60/40 backfield split at worst in 2022. With the Cowboys still expected to be a pretty good offense, he'd need to be injured or lose his starting role in order to not return value given his offseason ADP.

Tony Pollard expected to be full strength for training camp Surgery completed on ankle By: Mike Krueger | Tue Jan 24, 3:22 pm

| | Tony Pollard underwent surgery Tuesday on a broken left fibula and high ankle sprain he suffered in the Cowboys’ divisional round playoff loss to San Francisco, per source. Should be full strength well before training camp. Set to be an unrestricted free agent in March...
Want to clarify on the Tony Pollard surgery: the tightrope procedure was to correct the high ankle sprain regarding the ligaments. The fibula will heal with time; no casting. (Todd Archer on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: The Cowboys certainly want to have Pollard back but they've already got Ezekiel Elliott under a large contract. Perhaps a Zeke restructure would be enough to keep both backs in the Dallas backfield moving forward?

| Pollard suffers high ankle sprain, fractured fibula Upcoming free agent By: Mike Krueger | Sun Jan 22, 11:06 pm

| | Tony Pollard suffered a high ankle sprain & a fractured fibula in Sunday’s loss, a person w/ knowledge of the injury said. A timetable won’t be determined until surgery is completed, but a four-month timeframe is reasonable.
Big blow for soon to be free agent. (David Moore on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Pollard demonstrated to be the Cowboys best running back in 2022 and will now hit the free agent market as a sought after piece assuming he's able to fully recover from his injuries tonight. The Cowboys will want him back but will they be able to re-sign him with an expensive Ezekiel Elliott also in the mix? The Cowboys would suffer a $12 million cap hit if they release the veteran RB.

| Tony Pollard expected to be inactive tonight Thigh injury By: Mike Krueger | Thu Dec 29, 12:48 pm

| | #Cowboys RB Tony Pollard (thigh) will be inactive tonight against the #Titans, per source. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: With Pollard out of the mix, that will leave Ezekiel Elliott as the starter and we should also see more of Malik Davis as well. If Davis assumes most of Pollard's role that would put him in Flex consideration even in a difficult matchup against the Titans.

| Tony Pollard has yet to practice this week Consecutive DNPs due to thigh injury By: Doug Orth | Tue Dec 27, 11:30 pm

| | Tony Pollard is dealing with a thigh ailment that held him out of practice on Monday and again on Tuesday. (dallascowboys.com)
FFToday's Take: Team owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 the Fan the Cowboys expect Pollard will play against the Titans. However, HC Mike McCarthy noted Tuesday that third-stringer Malik Davis will get the bulk of RB2 reps this week in the event a decision is made to rest Pollard in much the same way the team did Ezekiel Elliott a few weeks ago. Pollard will be in the high-end RB2 discussion if he plays against the Titans, while Davis would be a decent flex in deeper leagues if he Pollard sits.

| Ezekiel Elliott expecting to play in Week 11 Hyperextended knee By: Mike Krueger | Thu Nov 17, 3:27 pm

| | #Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is expecting to return vs #Vikings after missing two games with hyperextended knee. “I’m definitely very optimistic about this week. Barring any setbacks the next couple of days, I’m feeling good…I think I’m in a good spot.” Will wear brace. (Ed Werder on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Elliott was injured in Week 7, missed Week 8, had bye in Week 9 then sat again in Week 10. His return would mean another split backfield for the Cowboys in Week 11 against the Vikings. Tony Pollard has thrived in games without Zeke this year, including handling 25 touches last week against the Packers. The Vikings represent a negative matchup, allowing the 8th fewest fantasy points to the position.

| Ezekiel Elliott is a gametime decision Knee injury By: Mike Krueger | Sat Nov 12, 8:00 pm

| | #Cowboys do not expect to finalize a decision on RB Ezekiel Elliott’s status against the #Packers until evaluating him pregame, per source. Expect a conservative decision. Elliott has knee injury. He has never missed consecutive games but he’s mentioned long-term considerations. (Ed Werder on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: It sounds like there's a good chance that Zeke sits today which would make Tony Pollard the start at running back. The last time this happened Pollard only played 53% of the snaps but turned in a 14-131-3 line on the ground against the Bears. He'll be a low-end RB1 option against Green Bay if Zeke doesn't play. Qadree Ollison has been called up from the practice squad.
