2021 Outlook

A season-ending broken leg against the Giants in Week 5 cut short what could have been a monster fantasy season for Dak Prescott. Before his gruesome leg injury, Dak was on pace to be the number one fantasy quarterback, with three consecutive games of over 400 passing yards as the Dallas defense continued to for Prescott and the offense to throw heavily to stay in games.

In addition to the season-ending injury to Dak, the Cowboys lost three starting pro-bowl offensive linemen, leaving the remaining skill position players to suffer with a backup quarterback in Andy Dalton and a rag-tag group of backup linemen in what proved to be a massively disappointing first year under head coach Mike McCarthy.

Dak is back, and it appears that Zack Martin, Tyron Smith, and La'el Collins are back and will be ready for the season opener. With an elite offensive line and a deep collection of skill potion players, Dak is primed to build off 2020 and ascend to elite status among fantasy quarterbacks.

The one negative to keep in mind is the improved defensive moves made by Jerry Jones, and the front office should limit the need for Dak to pass and the ridiculous levels we saw in 2020. This does not mean that Dak cannot be a top-5 QB, but it does mean a likely reduction in pass attempts.

Injury Dak Prescott strains calf late in Week 6
Expected back after team's Week 7 bye
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 18, 10:00 pm

Dallas Cowboys
Mike McCarthy said the MRI just confirmed that Dak Prescott has a right calf strain. He will rest this week. The medical staff is “optimistic” he will be able to play against Minnesota after the bye week. (The Athletic - Jon Machota)

FFToday's Take: A player can typically return from a mild calf strain in about two weeks, so it is fair to assume that is what happened with Prescott. Most fantasy managers were prepared to be without him this week already, and it sounds like Prescott would miss one game at most if the Cowboys want to be overly cautious with him. Cooper Rush would likely get the nod over Will Grier if Prescott isn't ready for the Vikings in two weeks.

Dak Prescott cleared to turn it loose
No more pitch count following shoulder issue
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 26, 11:15 pm

Dallas Cowboys
Cowboys OC Kellen Moore said QB Dak Prescott “looked great” in practice Wednesday during his first team drills in four weeks. No longer on a pitch count. “We’re just playing ball at this point.” (Michael Gehlken on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Fantasy managers of Prescott can breathe a bit easier, as caution and the rational handling of his injury likely means this will be the last time he will have to deal with a muscle strain in his shoulder this season. He should be considered a top-five option at his position with overall QB1 upside.

Injury Amari Cooper expected to see action on Saturday
10 or 12 snaps
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Aug 20, 10:55 am

Dallas Cowboys
Cowboys WR Amari Cooper is expected to play about 10 or 12 snaps in Saturday’s exhibition vs. Texans, Mike McCarthy said. DE DeMarcus Lawrence, QB Dak Prescott and RB Ezekiel Elliott among those who won’t play. (Michael Gehlken on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Cooper was activated off the PUP list on August 10th after rehabbing from off-season foot surgery. All indications are that he will be ready to go Week 1 without issue. Cooper is sporting a mid-fourth round ADP in PPR leagues about a full round behind CeeDee Lamb.

Injury Prescott considered day-to-day after MRI on shoulder
Diagnosed with muscle strain in right throwing shoulder
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jul 28, 7:11 pm

Dallas Cowboys
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott diagnosed with muscle strain in right throwing shoulder following MRI today. He is considered day-to-day, team said. (Michael Gehlken on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Prescott stated he “felt some soreness when making certain throws today ... I don’t see this as any kind of serious setback. We’ll treat it on a daily basis, and I’ll be fine.” This doesn't sound too serious but anytime an MRI is done it's noteworthy. He could be limited in the coming weeks but it's no cause for alarm at the moment.
