2021 Outlook
Depth Chart
Thomas' 2020 season seemed lost from the start. After suffering a Week 1 ankle injury against Tampa, he was out of the lineup until Week 9. But even on his return, it was clear he wasn't the same guy, recording just two 100-yard games and failing to score a single regular season touchdown. He did not have the same rapport with QB Drew Brees either.

But with Brees riding off into retirement, and Thomas hopefully returning to full health (he was scheduled to have surgery on his ankle this offseason, but there's been no confirmation that actually happened), there may be some good news on the horizon for Thomas owners. The former Pro Bowler's two 100-yard efforts and his three highest target totals came with Taysom Hill under center.

No matter who wins the Jameis Winston-Taysom Hill QB competition, a healthy Michael Thomas is the best receiving option on the team and a worthy WR1. But the situation bears watching. If Hill comes out on top, it could be a boost for Thomas, who has thrived as a catch and run threat in the short to intermediate passing game.

Injury Michael Thomas still "a couple weeks away"
Nearing end of recovery from summer ankle surgery
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 18, 11:55 pm

New Orleans
As the players on PUP are eligible to come off the list and practice, we took a look at some key ones. Of note: #Saints WR Michael Thomas is believed to be a few weeks away. (NFL Network - Ian Rapoport)

FFToday's Take: While Thomas is eligible to return now, there's no way he would be allowed to play in Week 7 even if he was completely healthy; he has not knowingly practiced in roughly 10 months. A Week 8 return seems unlikely as well. It remains to be seen if his return is what allows HC Sean Payton to open up the offense a bit. In Thomas' absence, the Saints have evolved into one of the slower and run-heavy offenses in the league incapable of supporting even one fantasy receiver on a weekly basis.

Kenny Stills working out for Saints
Veteran WR could return to his old team
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Sep 14, 9:15 am

New Orleans
Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) via Twitter: "The #Saints worked out a group of receivers today that included veterans Marqise Lee and Kenny Stills." (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Stills could make for a speculative add in deeper formats if he signs with the Saints, who are pretty thin at WR this season -- especially with Tre'Quan Smith injured and Michael Thomas on IR until midseason.

Injury Michael Thomas expected to land on PUP list
Off-season foot surgery
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Aug 31, 11:59 am

New Orleans
Saints’ WR Michael Thomas, who underwent off-season foot surgery, is expected to land on PUP, which will sideline him the first six weeks, per sources. Being that the Saints have an early bye, placing Thomas on PUP would sideline him for at least the first five games. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Saints have a bye in Week 6, meaning Thomas would be eligible to play in Week 7 against the Seahawks. Thomas has battled injuries the last two seasons allowing him to play in only 7 games in 2020. If you're league has a deep bench, he's worthy of look in the later rounds. Marquez Callaway and Tre'Quan Smith will work on the outside while Thomas is away.

Injury Michael Thomas lands on PUP
Ankle injury could keep WR out until Week 7
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 26, 6:45 pm

New Orleans
The Saints have officially put WR Michael Thomas (ankle) on PUP to begin training camp. (ESPN - Field Yates)

FFToday's Take: Thomas can come off the PUP list at any time but must miss the first six weeks if he remains there going into the season. Thomas' expected absence frees up roughly 25 percent of the team's target share to spread out among Alvin Kamara, Adam Trautman, Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris. New Orleans is almost certain to lean more heavily on the run game (specifically Latavius Murray) as well. Thomas is a smart stash candidate in leagues with multiple IR spots in the early double-digit rounds, but managers in non-IR leagues are justified in letting him slip further than that.

Injury Michael Thomas expected to miss start of 2021 season
Ankle surgery in June
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jul 23, 10:26 am

New Orleans
Sources: #Saints star WR Michael Thomas is expected to miss the start of the 2021 season after undergoing surgery to repair the ligaments in his ankle in June. Based on the timing of the surgery - and recommended 4 months of recovery - Thomas could be on the sideline for weeks. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Wow. This is a serious blow to Thomas' fantasy outlook. He was limited to 7 games in 2020 due to an injury to the same ankle. Apparently it didn't heal correctly. We should get a better idea of his recovery timeline in the coming days, but missing the first month of the season is a real possibility. Expect the Saints to be shopping the free agent wide receiver market in the coming days.
