2021 Outlook
Depth Chart
When this 6'-0", 228-lb freight train of a back came to the Buccaneers last year as a waiver claim from Jacksonville, most people expected him to be the thunder to Ronald Jones' lightning. A power back with size and strength to move the pile, he's a dangerous between the tackles runner, and a serious threat in short-yardage and goal line situations, and he delivered with six rushing touchdowns in 2020, though he only toted the ball a total of 97 times.

Where he really made his impact was as a receiver out of the backfield. He caught 36 passes (tied for 2nd-most in his career) on 42 targets for 233 yards. Half those catches came in the Bucs' four postseason games, totaling 148 yards, averaging over 8.2 yards per catch and earning Fournette the moniker "Lombardi Lenny".

By that time, it had become clear that the Tampa Bay offense was becoming a hybrid of Bruce Arians' playbook and a list of Tom Brady's favorite things from New England - including a checkdown passing game. Essentially, Brady was looking for James White, who made a career as Brady's 3rd down security blanket with the Patriots. So, what Brady wants, Brady gets, or at least tries to get. Despite Fournette's playoff breakout, Tampa courted White in free agency. When he re-signed with New England, the team went and got RB Giovani Bernard who had almost 50 catches in 2020 in a reserve role, and not nearly as many drops as Jones or Fournette.

Fournette's inconsistency and his injury history have to be a concern for Arians and Brady. Fournette has a laundry list of lower body injuries dating back to his college days at LSU and has never played a full 16-game season in the NFL. The bottom line is splitting carries with Jones, and possibly yielding at least some 3rd down snaps to Bernard, is going to leave Fournette short of any real fantasy value until one of those guys ends up on the injured list.

Injury Bucs activate Leonard Fournette, waive Le'Veon Bell
Fournette expected to play
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Jan 22, 3:50 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bucs are waiving Le’Veon Bell today to make room for Leonard Fournette being activated off injured reserve. (Greg Auman on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: We've assumed this transaction was coming and here it is. Fournette is expected to play against the Rams on Sunday after missing the last month with a hamstring injury. With Ronald Jones out, expect Giovani Bernard to backup Fournette with a sprinkle of Ke'Shawn Vaughn mixed in.

Injury Leonard Fournette back at practice Thursday
Hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Jan 20, 11:45 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bucs tailback Leonard Fournette, still technically on injured reserve, was spotted at the portion of Thursday morning’s practice open to reporters. Two days ago, Fournette tweeted a message suggesting he would be ready for Sunday’s NFC divisional playoff against the Rams. Ronald Jones, who has missed the last two games with an ankle injury, was out of his protective boot and working with a trainer. (Rick Stroud on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It seems like Fournette is trending towards playing after sitting out Wildcard Weekend against the Eagles. We should know more after practice on Friday. Giovani Bernard and Ke'Shawn Vaughn are expected to be available as well.

Injury Bucs RBs remain uncertain for Divisional Round
Fournette, RoJo "question marks" versus Rams
By: Doug Orth | Tue Jan 18, 12:40 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Arians said Bucs will have to see if Leonard Fournette can go full speed on his hamstring, said Ronald Jones isn't cutting yet on his injured ankle, so both remain question marks for next weekend's game. (The Athletic - Greg Auman)

FFToday's Take: Both backs sat out the Wild Card win against the Eagles, so it is not terribly surprising Arians remain iffy on their status a day after the game. Jones did not practice at all last week, making him the more unlikely of the two to go against the Rams. Fournette remains on IR, so the team does not have to report his practice status. Fantasy managers or DFS players will have to wait on beat writers for confirmation one way or the other later in the week. If neither one can go, Giovani Bernard would be the preferred option over Ke'Shawn Vaughn from this backfield given his involvement in the passing game.

Injury Leonard Fournette not expected to play Wildcard Weekend
Giovani Bernard will be active
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Jan 15, 3:32 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Source tells me Lavonte David and Giovani Bernard will be activated from IR. Leonard Fournette will not be activated. (Jenna Laine on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Fournette (hamstring) got in some practice this week but apparently isn't ready to go. The Bucs will have Ke'Shawn Vaughn, Le'Veon Bell and Giovani Bernard active for their games against the Eagles. Given Bernard has missed the last five weeks with knee and hip issues. Vaughn has some uninspiring Flex appeal this week.

Injury Leonard Fournette a gametime decision
Hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jan 14, 12:42 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The only players out for Sunday's game is Cyril Grayson and Ronald Jones, Bruce Arians said. "There's about four game-time decisions, the guys coming off IR or have been out, that we'll have to see on the field Sunday before the game." "I feel pretty good about Shaq (Barrett) and JPP,'' Arians said. "The most questionable would be Lavonte (David) with Leonard Fournette." (Rick Stroud on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Fournette injured his hamstring in Week 15 and hasn't played since so it will take a leap of faith for fantasy owners to plug him in their lineups. The majority of beat reporters feel like Fournette will go given his practice participation this week. If he misses, Ke'Shawn Vaughn would get the majority of reps at running back but wouldn't be a recommended fantasy play.

Injury Cyril Grayson, Ronald Jones Doubtful for Wildcard Weekend
Bucs walkthrough practice on Wednesday
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jan 12, 12:45 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Cyril Grayson and Ronald Jones are doubtful for Sunday, Arians said. (Rick Stroud on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Head coach Bruce Arians speaking to the media today labeled both offensive players as Doubtful for the Bucs game against the Eagles. We're expecting Leonard Fournette to be in a workhorse role in his first game back since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 15.

Injury Mike Evans ruled Out for Week 16
Hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Dec 24, 12:30 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
#Bucs WR Mike Evans and S Antoine Winfield, Jr., are out for Sunday's game at Carolina. (Rick Stroud on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Bucs lost Evans, Chris Godwin (ACL), and Leonard Fournette (hamstring) to injury last week leaving their offense decimated. Breshad Perriman remains on the Covid list so it appears Antonio Brown, Rob Gronkowski and Tyler Johnson will likely be Brady's top three targets against the Panthers.

Injury Leonard Fournette likely headed for IR
Hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Dec 21, 6:08 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Buccaneers now are “likely” to place RB Leonard Fournette on injured reserve with the hamstring injury that left him on crutches Sunday night, per a league source. He then would miss rest of regular season. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Fournette has been on of the fantasy bright spots this season and currently sits as the RB3 in PPR leagues. His loss will mean more work for Ronald Jones over next three games with Ke'Shawn Vaughn mixing in here and there on passing downs. Le'Veon Bell is expected to sign on Wednesday and would backup Jones. The Bucs could also call up former Chief, Darwin Thompson.

Injury Leonard Fournette unlikely to go in Week 16
Minor hamstring injury
By: Doug Orth | Tue Dec 21, 1:45 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Leonard Fournette may miss some time, a game or two, but not a major injury. (NFL Network - Ian Rapoport)

FFToday's Take: Just when fantasy managers thought Ronald Jones was out of their lives, he has a chance to be a league-winner type. How is that possible? Because Tampa Bay faces the Panthers and Jets over the next two weeks. With Giovani Bernard on IR already, the Bucs are down to Jones and Ke'Shawn Vaughn. The combination of a soft matchup and a lack of healthy bodies in Tampa figures to make Jones a strong candidate for 20 touches for however long Fournette is out.

Injury Bucs lose Godwin, Evans, Fournette to injury on SNF
Knee injury for Godwin, Hamstring injuries for Evans, Fournette
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 19, 11:31 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Arians has no details on severity of injuries -- Mike Evans and Leonard Fournette have hamstring injuries, Chris Godwin a knee injury, Lavonte David a foot injury. (Greg Auman on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Ian Rapoport noted that Godwin suffered a sprained MCL based on initial diagnosis and will likely miss some time with an MRI scheduled tomorrow. We'll likely get word on the hamstring injuries suffered by Evans and Fournette in the coming days. Antonio Brown is eligible to return from his suspension in Week 16. Ronald Jones is in position to be the starting RB next week against the Panthers.
