2020 Outlook
Depth Chart
The potential improvement along the interior of the offensive line would benefit the running game more than anything else. Kamara could use a few more wide-open holes so he could bust some longer runs. During his rookie season, Kamara averaged 6.1 yards per carry, but in the past two seasons that has fallen to 4.6 and 4.7, respectively. The main difference seems to be tied to his inability to break off long runs, which ties back to his number of opportunities to get into wide open space.

The improvement in the passing game that could come with Emmanuel Sanders in town could also help to provide Kamara with some extra room to work. Despite the decrease in his efficiency, Kamara has still been quite effective, finishing with 1,592 and 1,330 total yards from scrimmage the past two seasons. But along with his decrease in rushing efficiency, he has also seen his receiving efficiency fall. His yards per reception has gone from 10.2 to 8.8 to 6.6 over the past three seasons. Since it does not look like he has lost explosiveness, it is up to the Saints' coaching staff to find ways to get him in the open field so he can produce big chunk plays more often.

Because he has regular involvement in the passing game (he has posted exactly 81 receptions in every season of his career), his floor is very high and he is a very safe pick, as long as he can stay healthy. He is going in the middle of the first round of fantasy drafts right now, so drafters agree that he is very safe and also has huge upside. I am also comfortable taking him there, and believe he will see some positive regression in 2020, leading to both more efficiency and to more trips to the end zone.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Alvin Kamara misses practice Thursday
Foot injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Nov 19, 4:28 pm

New Orleans
Saints running back Alvin Kamara (foot) says he's doing good, he's all right, and that the foot injury is indeed the same thing he was dealing with last week. He did not practice today. (Amie Just on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It sounds like the Saints are just resting their star running back. Expect him to be listed as questionable on the injury report Friday but play on Sunday against the Falcons.

Injury Michael Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders practice Wednesday
Kamara misses with minor foot issue
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 4, 3:40 pm

New Orleans
Saints RB Alvin Kamara wasn’t present for the early portion of practice open to the media Wednesday. Will get the practice report soon to find out why. There was no known injury in Sunday’s game. Good news: WRs Michael Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Marquez Callaway were participating. (Mike Triplett on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Time will tell is Thomas (hamstring, ankle) is able to play this week but we should get Sanders back against the Bucs. Kamara has a bone bruise on his foot but it isn't expected to affect his status for Week 9.

Injury Michael Thomas, Marquez Callaway Out for Week 8
Thomas limited in practice this week
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 30, 3:58 pm

New Orleans
The Saints have officially ruled out WRs Michael Thomas and Marquez Callaway for Sunday at Chicago. And WR Emmanuel Sanders remains on the reserve-COVID list. So expect a heavy dose of Alvin Kamara, Jared Cook, Tre’Quan Smith and Deonte Harris in the passing game. (Mike Triplett on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The frustration for Thomas owners continues. Thomas got in some limited work this week but won't be on the field this Sunday due to his hamstring injury. With Callaway (ankle) and Sanders (COVID) also out, it will be Tre'Quan Smith and Deonte Harris doing most the damage from the wide receiver spot. Both are sketch flex options given Kamara and TE Jared Cook should be the top two options in the offense against the Bears.

Injury Emmanuel Sanders placed on reserve-COVID list
Out for Week 7
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 23, 2:45 pm

New Orleans
Saints are placing WR Emmanuel Sanders on reserve-COVID list, meaning he will be out for Sunday’s game vs. Panthers, per source. Issue is he practiced Thursday and now must quarantine. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: With Michael Thomas looking doubtful after suffering a hamstring injury and missing practice Thursday and Friday, the Saints will be focused on Alvin Kamara, Jared Cook and Tre'Quan Smith on offense against the Panthers.

Injury Saints FB Michael Burton tests positive for COVID-19
Team is re-testing his close contacts
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 3, 11:55 pm

New Orleans
#Saints FB Michael Burton received an initial positive COVID-19 test and is being re-tested to confirm, source said. In addition, the team is testing his close contacts. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The problem here is that the entire team flew to Detroit before the test results were know. It's been reported that Alvin Kamara was one of the close contacts to Burton. We should have more updates Sunday morning on the status of the Saints / Lions game. Fantasy owners need to be on the ball tomorrow morning.

Injury Michael Thomas, Cook out for the Saints
Thomas limited in practice Friday
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 2, 5:00 pm

New Orleans
Wow. Saints WR Michael Thomas ruled out for Sunday as they decide to practice caution with his ankle injury - along with five other starters ruled out: CB Marshon Lattimore, CB Janoris Jenkins, DE Marcus Davenport, TE Jared Cook and G Andrus Peat. (Mike Triplett on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The amount of high-profile skill position players that have missed time over the first three weeks is astounding. Without Thomas and Cook, it should be the Alvin Kamara show once again for the Saints. Tre'Quan Smith and Emmanuel Sanders will be the wideout options for the Saints. Both are Flex candidates.

Alvin Kamara expected to practice, negotiations ongoing
Not seeking a trade
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Sep 1, 7:15 pm

New Orleans
#Saints RB Alvin Kamara intends to show up tomorrow and practice after missing several days following an epidural shot in his back last Thursday. The sides weren't that far apart on an extension before things went sideways. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Kamara has been out of practice the last few days and the two sides have been negotiating on a new contract in recent days. Kamara and his agent have stated that they are not seeking a trade but other reports suggest the team is willing to accept offers. In all likelihood, expect a new deal to be signed soon.

Alvin Kamara away from team
Missed last three practices, reportedly due to contract
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 31, 5:35 pm

New Orleans
Saints' RB Alvin Kamara has had an unexcused absence from training camp the past three days and it is believe to be contract related, per sources. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: The timing of this news is far from ideal for fantasy owners, but it is understandable from Kamara's perspective. While he is still on his rookie deal and set to make just over $2 million in 2020, Christian McCaffrey and Derrick Henry got huge extensions earlier this offseason. The Saints are in win-now mode and undoubtedly want to keep Kamara around, so the two sides should reconcile soon. Fantasy owners should still view him as a top-five option but make sure they make every effort to handcuff him with Latavius Murray in drafts over the next 1 1/2 weeks.
