2021 Outlook
Depth Chart
After a 7-9 season in 2016, Saints HC Sean Payton stepped back and re-evaluated his offense. The result was a departure from the "Drew Brees Air Show" and a more concerted effort in the run game. The following season, New Orleans featured a much more balanced attack with almost 450 attempts and their first 2,000-yard rushing effort in recent memory. The trend would continue in 2018 with nearly 475 carries, and the Saints haven't won less than 11 games in a season since, including last year, when Brees missed four games due to injury and the Saints rushed for 2,200+ yards.

It's no coincidence that this transformation has coincided with Alvin Kamara's arrival in the Superdome. With his quickness, burst, and ridiculous change of direction skills, he's tremendous in space, and his ability as a receiver makes him a dangerous two-way threat. While he's never posted a 1,000-yard rushing season, he has averaged 5.0 yards per carry and 102.7 total yards per game for his career. He breaks more tackles than most people realize and can be a dangerous weapon around the goal line as a result. It shows in his 58 TD's from scrimmage over the last four years.

Fantasy owners should expect a heavier reliance on the run game from the Saints this year, especially early on as they determine who and what comes next at QB. Kamara will be the primary weapon in that attack, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him get north of 200 carries. If Taysom Hill wins the starting job, that could signal a problem for his receiving numbers as his targets dropped significantly with Hill behind center in 2020, but Kamara is a clear RB1 and potentially a top ten pick in your draft.

Injury Saints release Latavius Murray
Team asked RB to take a paycut, Murray refused
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Sep 7, 6:00 pm

New Orleans
Saints are releasing RB Latavius Murray, per source. They asked for a pay reduction yesterday and he refused. Murray is coming off his best season, averaging 4.5 yards per carry and 7.7 yards per catch. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Saints liked what the saw from Tony Jones during the preseason which made this move not so surprising. He becomes the No.2 RB behind Alvin Kamara. Murray will likely get some interest from RB needy teams (BAL?) although the Ravens did sign veteran Le'Veon Bell to their practice squad earlier today.

Jamies Winston named the starter in New Orleans
Strong second preseason game
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Aug 27, 8:50 am

New Orleans
Jameis Winston has been named the Saints' starting quarterback and will make his first start for New Orleans on opening day vs. Green Bay Packers, per sources. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Not it's official. Winston helped his causing by going 9-of-10 for 123 yards and two touchdowns to receiver Marquez Callaway. Killing Winston's fantasy value will be Taysom Hill who will still have a swiss-army-knife role in the offense and keep Winston in the QB2 conversation. This move does help all the Saints receivers and Alvin Kamara but it remains to be seen if Winston will target Kamara as much as Drew Brees did.

Saints add veteran RB Devonta Freeman
One-year deal
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Jul 31, 5:00 pm

New Orleans
And this was quick: Former Falcons’ standout Devonta Freeman and the Saints now have reached agreement on a one-year deal, per his agent @DrewJRosenhaus. Freeman reunited with his former college teammate, Jameis Winston. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Freeman will be slotted in behind Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray on the depth chart. It's difficult to get excited about Freeman's fantasy prospects unless Kamara or Murray miss time with an injury.

Injury Michael Thomas lands on PUP
Ankle injury could keep WR out until Week 7
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 26, 6:45 pm

New Orleans
The Saints have officially put WR Michael Thomas (ankle) on PUP to begin training camp. (ESPN - Field Yates)

FFToday's Take: Thomas can come off the PUP list at any time but must miss the first six weeks if he remains there going into the season. Thomas' expected absence frees up roughly 25 percent of the team's target share to spread out among Alvin Kamara, Adam Trautman, Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris. New Orleans is almost certain to lean more heavily on the run game (specifically Latavius Murray) as well. Thomas is a smart stash candidate in leagues with multiple IR spots in the early double-digit rounds, but managers in non-IR leagues are justified in letting him slip further than that.
