2021 Outlook
Depth Chart
After a 7-9 season in 2016, Saints HC Sean Payton stepped back and re-evaluated his offense. The result was a departure from the "Drew Brees Air Show" and a more concerted effort in the run game. The following season, New Orleans featured a much more balanced attack with almost 450 attempts and their first 2,000-yard rushing effort in recent memory. The trend would continue in 2018 with nearly 475 carries, and the Saints haven't won less than 11 games in a season since, including last year, when Brees missed four games due to injury and the Saints rushed for 2,200+ yards.

It's no coincidence that this transformation has coincided with Alvin Kamara's arrival in the Superdome. With his quickness, burst, and ridiculous change of direction skills, he's tremendous in space, and his ability as a receiver makes him a dangerous two-way threat. While he's never posted a 1,000-yard rushing season, he has averaged 5.0 yards per carry and 102.7 total yards per game for his career. He breaks more tackles than most people realize and can be a dangerous weapon around the goal line as a result. It shows in his 58 TD's from scrimmage over the last four years.

Fantasy owners should expect a heavier reliance on the run game from the Saints this year, especially early on as they determine who and what comes next at QB. Kamara will be the primary weapon in that attack, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him get north of 200 carries. If Taysom Hill wins the starting job, that could signal a problem for his receiving numbers as his targets dropped significantly with Hill behind center in 2020, but Kamara is a clear RB1 and potentially a top ten pick in your draft.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Ian Book expected to start at QB for New Orleans
Taysom Hill, Trevor Siemian on Covid list
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Dec 23, 12:10 pm

New Orleans
Can confirm via sources that both Saints QBs Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian are expected to be placed on the reserve/COVID list and that rookie Ian Book is preparing to start on Monday night (Book has not tested positive so far). (Mike Triplett on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The NFL's Covid protocols strike again. The rookie will make his first start against the Dolphins on Monday Night Football. He was drafted in the 4th round of the 2021 draft and does have some mobility. However, this is a downgrade to the entire Saints offense. Only Alvin Kamara is a fantasy consideration.

Injury Mark Ingram lands on Covid-19 list
Alvin Kamara expected to play
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 8, 2:15 pm

New Orleans
New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be placed on the NFL's reserve/COVID-19 list, sources said Wednesday. It is not yet known when Ingram, who is vaccinated, returned his positive test or if he is currently experiencing symptoms. If he is asymptomatic, he can return to the team after two negative tests. (Nola.com)

FFToday's Take: The Saints are expected to get Alvin Kamara back this week. If Ingram sits, Tony Jones should assume the backup running role in a great matchup against the Jets who have given up the most fantasy points to running backs this season.

Injury Alvin Kamara expected to sit Thursday night
Mark Ingram should get the start
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Dec 2, 10:02 am

New Orleans
The #Saints won’t have star RB Alvin Kamara (knee), OT Ryan Ramczyk (knee) or OT Terron Armstead (knee) for tonight vs. #Cowboys, sources tell me and @SlaterNFL. They are out. Short-handed again. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: At least we don't have to wait for the Inactives to come out. Without Kamara, the Saints will utilize Mark Ingram in a lead role with Tony Jones backing up. Ingram slots in as a RB2 based on volume. The Cowboys have given up the 8th fewest fantasy points to running backs.

Injury Alvin Kamara limited Wednesday, listed as Questionable
Taysom Hill expected to start
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 1, 5:00 pm

New Orleans
Saints RB Alvin Kamara and OTs Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk listed as questionable after Kamara was limited Wednesday and others didn't practice QB Taysom Hill full participant, which lines him up to start Thursday DEs Marcus Davenport, Tanoh Kpassagnon, LB Kaden Elliss out (Mike Triplett on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: With Mark Ingram and Tony Jones ready go and Kamara not fully healthy, it would make sense for the Saints to give him another 10 days of rest but we'll have to wait until tomorrow before we know his true game status. Even if Kamara does play, he could be limited.

Taysom Hill taking first team practice reps
Could start Thursday against the Cowboys
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Nov 29, 2:30 pm

New Orleans
Sources: The #Saints appear poised to make a QB change. Taysom Hill is taking first-team reps this week in practice in preparation to face the #Cowboys. Trevor Siemian is taking No. 2 reps. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Saints have been getting underwhelming quarterback play all seasons so what do they have to lose? In all fairness, without Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara their isn't much to throw to in New Orleans for Trevor Siemian. Hill's rushing upside may be something for fantasy owners to chase but his passing yardage will be limited.

Injury Mark Ingram not expected to play
Knee injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Nov 25, 12:54 pm

New Orleans
Saints do not expect to have Mark Ingram later vs the Bills @NFLonFOX (Jay Glazer on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Saints will be down their top two running backs with Alvin Kamara also missing Thursday night's game against the Bills. Expect Tony Jones, Ty Montgomery and Dwayne Washington to get the running back. Jones can be used as a Flex option if you're desperate.

Injury Alvin Kamara ruled out for Week 12
Mark Ingram limited in practice Wednesday
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 24, 3:30 pm

New Orleans
Alvin Kamara has been ruled out for the Bills game. No Alvin Kamara at practice today. Mark Ingram was present but left before the end of the media-viewing period. No Davenport or Ramczyk. (Nick Underhill on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Ingram (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday. He will get the bulk of work this week against the Bills if he's able to play. If not, Tony Jones could be in for a significant workload.

Injury Alvin Kamara downgraded Thursday
Reportedly dealing with MCL sprain
By: Doug Orth | Thu Nov 18, 11:15 pm

New Orleans
Alvin Kamara was not at practice for the Saints today after being limited on Wednesday. This is obviously not a good development as the running back works his way back from an MCL sprain. (Nick Underhill on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Kamara was limited Wednesday, so it's hard to see this as a positive. Assuming Nick Underhill is correct and the 26-year-old is dealing with an MCL sprain, Kamara should be expected to miss at least one more game after sitting out Week 10. Mark Ingram played well while carrying the load in his absence last week and could be in the low-end RB1 discussion again in Week 11 in a much better matchup against the Eagles if Kamara is ruled out again.

Injury Alvin Kamara ruled Out for Week 10
Mark Ingram will start
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 12, 4:06 pm

New Orleans
Alvin Kamara is out for Sunday. (Nick Underhill on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Kamara wasn't able to practice all week with his knee injury. That will leave Mark Ingram to get the bulk of running back work for the Saints against the Titans. With Trevor Siemian starting at quarterback and a little Taysom Hill mixed in, we're not expecting much from the Saints offense. Ingram is a solid RB2 based on volume.

Injury Alvin Kamara misses practice Thursday
Knee injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Nov 11, 1:00 pm

New Orleans
Saints RB Alvin Kamara (knee),LT Terron Armstead (shoulder/foot),S C.J. Gardner-Johnson (foot),DE Payton Turner (shoulder) didn’t participate in portion of Thursday practice open to media. Not sure if Kamara has chance to play but Mark Ingram would obviously play huge role if not (Mike Triplett on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Kamara owners should prepare for him to miss this week's game against the Titans. There's an outside chance he could miss practice all week and still play on Sunday but beat writer speculation suggests that's a low probability. If Kamara does miss, Mark Ingram will step into a starting role and have some RB2 value in Week 10.

Texans sending Mark Ingram back to New Orleans
Should slide into backup role behind Kamara
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 27, 5:45 pm

Houston Texans
Trade! The #Texans are sending veteran RB Mark Ingram to the #Saints, sources tell me and @RapSheet. A reunion in New Orleans, where Ingram started his career. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Despite his age (31), Ingram gets a bit of a fantasy boost and should slide right into a backup role behind Alvin Kamara who's been receiving a hefty workload of late. The Texans will be left with David Johnson and Phillip Lindsay in the backfield but it's hard to get excited about either one given the ineptitude of their offense.
