There have never been any questions about McCaffrey's talent. He entered the NFL as the eighth overall pick back in 2017, and he averaged 1,814 yards and 13 TDs over his first three years. It was the injuries that created a fog over his fantasy value with the Stanford product appearing in just three games in 2020 and seven the following season. It devalued him enough that the Panthers were willing to take pennies on the dollar from San Francisco when they traded him in 2022.
Since joining the 49ers in October 2022, McCaffrey has appeared in 27 of 28 possible games (he, like many of the team's playmakers, was held out of Week 18 this last year), during which time he has averaged 119.7 yards per game and visited the end zone 31 times. Not only has he stayed on the field, but he's also been a workhorse, completely marginalizing the team's depth at the position and finishing second in the NFL in carries (272) last year. Although he doesn't get targeted on the same level as he was in Carolina, the veteran remains arguably the top pass-catching back in the NFL.
Entering his age-28 season, Run CMC should still be in his prime, and coming off consecutive injury-free campaigns you can feel comfortable downgrading his injury risk. Given his consistency, involvement in one of the league's top offenses, and talent, McCaffrey appears to be the clear choice for the No. 1 overall pick in most drafts.

Christian McCaffrey expected to play Week 10 limited in practice By: Mike Krueger | Thu Nov 7, 6:34 pm
| | "He's been awesome these last 2 days. Hopefully that continues to go well. I expect to get him out there." - Kyle Shanahan on Christian McCaffrey's status for Sunday (Via Tolbert & Copes) (KNBR on X)
FFToday's Take: McCaffrey has been listed as limited in practice the last two days but it sounds like he's trending towards paying against Tampa Bay in Week 10. How much work he will get is still in question but if he's on the field, fantasy owners should get him in their lineup. Jordan Mason (shoulder) was limited in practice on Thursday as was Deebo Samuel (ribs).
| Christian McCaffrey on the verge of return? Likely back in Week 10; has small chance of suiting up in Week 8 By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 21, 11:55 pm
| | 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan told reporters that he would be “surprised” if Christian McCaffrey were able to play Sunday night vs. the Cowboys, but he added that San Francisco’s star RB could be back after the bye on Nov. 10 vs. the Buccaneers. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)
FFToday's Take: The majority of fantasy managers would also be "surprised" as well. Despite how much San Francisco needs healthy bodies right now, the 49ers have taken the smart approach so far with CMC and seem likely to hold him out one more week before their Week 9 bye. Considering he has reportedly been setback-free since returning from Germany, that would give him about three weeks to get his commissioning back to where he wants it to be. Especially with how beat up San Francisco is right now, expect McCaffrey to handle 18-plus touches as soon as he can play.
| Christian McCaffrey will not play in Week 6 RB continues to "push" rehab on Achilles tendinitis By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 7, 11:00 pm
| | RB Christian McCaffrey also will remain on injured reserve and not be available for the team’s game on Thursday.
McCaffrey has not played this season due to Achilles tendinitis in both legs.
“(McCaffrey will) continue his rehab,” Shanahan said. “Every day you try to push the rehab more and more.”
(NBC Sports Bay Area)
FFToday's Take: McCaffrey has not played all season, so he wasn't going to make his season debut on a short week. He also has not practiced since early August, so a return in Week 7 seems unlikely as well. With that said, there seems to be cautious optimism that he will return no later than Week 10. It is difficult to assess whether McCaffrey is a good trade target at this point and it seems extremely unlikely the 49ers will ask him to carry a heavy workload anytime before December. As such, Jordan Mason's value should remain high all season.
| George Kittle misses practice Thursday, hamstring 49ers down three offensive weapons By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 19, 4:08 pm
| | 49ers TE George Kittle was not spotted at practice today and is experiencing tightness in his hamstring, per source. With no practice today, his status for Sunday’s game vs. the Rams is in question. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: Yet another injury for San Fransisco. In addition to Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel, the 49ers are likely to be without Kittle for their Week 3 matchup against the Rams. Eric Saubert has been working as the backup tight end but has just 3 targets in two games.
| Christian McCaffrey headed to IR, out next four games Calf tightness, Achilles tendinitis By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 14, 1:15 pm
| | ESPN sources: 49ers officially are placing All-Pro RB Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve due to his calf tightness and Achilles tendinitis. McCaffrey now will miss the next four games, at least, before the team assesses whether he can return in mid-October. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: We got word yesterday this may happen and now it has. McCaffrey was the overwhelming No.1 pick in fantasy football this season after the team projected this pre-season that McCaffrey to be fine for Week 1. That wasn't the case. Jordan Mason is looking more and more like a league winner with each passing day. Deebo Samuel Samuel should take on more of the rushing workload in the short-term until the team becomes more comfortable with rookie Isaac Guerendo who missed a good chunk of camp with an injury of his own.
| Christian McCaffrey Out Week 2, maybe longer 49ers considering placing McCaffrey on IR By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 13, 5:00 pm
| | #49ers RB Christian McCaffrey is OUT Sunday at Minnesota, Kyle Shanahan said. The #49ers are now considering placing Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve, which would sideline him this week plus three more games, Shanahan said. (Tom Pelissero on X)
FFToday's Take: The news keeps getting worse for McCaffrey who apparently was dealing with pain after Thursday's practice. Being placed on IR would mean that the earliest he could return would be Week 6 against the Seahawks. The 49ers have a bye in Week 9. Jordan Mason will be the lead running back in Week 2 and for however long McCaffrey sits.
| Shanahan updates Christian McCaffrey's status Achilles tendinitis more of an issue than his calf injury By: Doug Orth | Tue Sep 10, 5:50 pm
| | Kyle Shanahan on Christian McCaffrey’s health status: I believe they’re similar. Calf then, a calf now. You can ask Chrsitian more. Definitely if it was a playoff game, I believe he would have played. It’s not just the calf. It’s Achilles tendinitis and that stuff comes and goes. (Cam Inman on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: According to Shanahan, the tendinitis is the main issue and the severity of it is what is holding CMC back. ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested managers should plan to be without McCaffrey again in Week 2 versus the Vikings, although it is important to note that CMC is considered day-to-day for now. While he is not in McCaffrey's class as an all-purpose back, Jordan Mason stepped up in a big way in Week 1 and belongs in the fantasy RB1 discussion in Week 2 if McCaffrey sits again.
| Christian McCaffrey Inactive for Week 1 Jordan Mason expected to start By: Mike Krueger | Mon Sep 9, 6:54 pm
| | Christian McCaffrey is Inactive. With no McCaffrey, Jordan Mason will start the game with Patrick Taylor Jr. and rookie Isaac Guerendo also active and available. Guerendo likely will return kicks. (Matt Barrows on X)
FFToday's Take: McCaffrey was listed as Questionable with a calf injury that bothered him during training camp. He was limited in practice this week but was confident he would play. Mason becomes a viable RB2 as he gets the start. No word yet, if McCaffrey's calf issue will cause him to miss multiple games.
| CMC, Brandon Aiyuk practice on Tuesday RB was sidelined with minor calf issue; WR returns after long hold-in By: Doug Orth | Tue Sep 3, 11:50 pm
| | 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk and RB Christian McCaffrey back at practice on Tuesday… (ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner)
FFToday's Take: The news millions of fantasy managers wanted to hear. By all accounts, McCaffrey's calf issue was a minor one that either he or the team (if not both) treated conservatively. All fantasy managers - especially those with CMC - would be wise to stash Jordan Mason just in case. As far as Aiyuk is concerned, managers may want to sit him if possible this week. The Jets' secondary is about as stingy as it gets and Aiyuk could be on something of a snap count.
