The drumbeat of "Joe Mixon is washed" has picked up in the last two years and this narrative carries legitimate weight. Mixon's efficiency has continued to decline year after year and he hasn't looked like a difference maker on the field. Despite these concerns, Mixon has finished as a top-10 fantasy running back in three straight seasons.
He has been able to maintain fantasy relevance by consolidating the vast majority of touches in Cincinnati including plenty of rushing work last season (67% rush share), targets (64) and carries at the goal line. By monopolizing the backfield opportunities, it was fairly difficult for Mixon to fail considering the quality of the Cincinnati offense.
Whether fantasy managers like it or not, Mixon is set up to dominate the backfield of another phenomenal offense yet again. Rhetoric from Texans' training camp indicates that Mixon will take on a bell-cow role. If this is the case, Mixon should see the necessary volume to finish as a low-end RB1 once again.

Joe Mixon expected to play in Week 6 Hasn't played since Week 2, ankle injury By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 11, 2:43 pm
| | #Texans veteran running back Joe Mixon practiced again Friday, his second day in a row, and is expected to play Sunday as league sources expressed optimism he's ready for a solid workload against #Patriots, barring any unexpected setback. (Aaron Wilson on X)
FFToday's Take: Mixon hasn't played since suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 2. His return will make Cam Akers and Dare Ogunbowale unplayable in most fantasy lineups. Dameon Pierce is also expected to be available after getting in a full practice on Thursday.
| Houston offers updates on Joe Mixon, Nico Collins RB still in limbo for Week 6, WR week-to-week with hamstring issue By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 7, 7:30 pm
| | DeMeco Ryans on Nico Collins: "He's in good sprits. It takes a couple of weeks for a hamstring. So we'll evaluate him on a week-to-week basis."
Ryans said he's not sure if Joe Mixon will be available this week. Still trying to figure that out.
(Jonathan Alexander on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Collins' injury occurred on his 67-yard touchdown catch late in the first quarter and did not appear to be too significant at the time, so it comes as a surprise that he might miss more than one game. Xavier Hutchinson stepped up in his absence, but fantasy managers should expect much more Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell if Collins cannot play in Week 6. As far as Mixon, he did not practice at all last week, which probably means he is off to a bad start if he hopes to play this weekend against the Patriots. Cam Akers, Dare Ogunbowale and maybe even Dameon Pierce could see work in his absence.
| Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce miss practice Thursday Texans still struggling at RB By: Mike Krueger | Thu Oct 3, 1:34 pm
| | #Texans’ Joe Mixon misses second practice in a row with ankle injury, Laremy Tunsil returns to practice, Tank Dell, Jimmie Ward practice second day in a row, Dameon Pierce sidelined again
@KPRC2 (Aaron Wilson on X)
FFToday's Take: Mixon was a limited participant in practice on Friday of last week but was ultimately ruled Out for Week 4. Two missed practices to begin Week 5 isn't promising for chances to play on Sunday against the Bills. If both Mixon and Pierce aren't able to play, it will once again be Cam Akers leading the backfield for the Texans. He's been underwhelming the last few weeks in the lead-back role.
| Joe Mixon, Tank Dell trending in right direction for Week 5 RB nursing an ankle sprain, WR dealing with a chest issue By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 30, 5:25 pm
| | Texans coach DeMeco Ryans says RB Joe Mixon and WR Tank Dell will be 'day-to-day' this week.
"We'll see this week with a week of practice." (Jonathan Alexander on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: Mixon made a surprise return to a limited practice on Friday, suggesting he has a realistic shot at playing in Week 5 against the Bills. Dell did not practice all of last week, but he is also more likely than not to play. Mixon was saying enough volume before his injury to be considered a high-end RB2, so his return will be important for fantasy managers. Dell was having his best game of the season in Week 3 before getting hurt, but he appears to be a clear third option behind Nico Collins and Stefon Diggs at the moment.
| Joe Mixon Out for Week 4, ankle injury Cam Akers expected to start By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 29, 10:18 am
| | Source: #Texans RB Joe Mixon will be OUT today vs the #Jaguars due to his ankle injury. Mixon tested it this morning, and while he's feeling better, everyone agreed to take the safe route and give him another week. (Jordan Schultz on X)
FFToday's Take: Mixon got in a limited session on Friday but needs another week to get healthy. With Dameon Pierce (hamstring) also out, it will be Cam Akers at running back for the Texans against the Jaguars today. Akers got 10 touches in a similar role last week against the Vikings. He's a Flex option in a much better matchup.
| Tank Dell unlikely to play in Week 4 Missed practice Thursday, ribs By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 26, 1:34 pm
| | #Texans’ Tank Dell managing pain of bruised ribs, unlikely to play against Jaguars; Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce still sidelined @KPRC2 (Aaron Wilson on X)
FFToday's Take: Dell has missed practice both Wednesday and Thursday due to a rib injury. If he misses Week 4 against Jacksonville, expect more receiving production from Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs and TE Dalton Schultz. Cam Akers is trending to get another start as well.
| Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce miss practice Wednesday Cam Akers prepping for increased role in Week 3 By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 18, 1:57 pm
| | Texans running back Cam Akers, with Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce sidelined, preps for increased role against his former team #Vikings @KPRC2 (Aaron Wilson on X)
FFToday's Take: Mixon injured his ankle in Week 2, came back into the game, the left again. With Pierce battling a hamstring injury, we could see Cam Akers get the start in Week 3 against the Vikings. Stay tuned as we'll learn more as the week goes on.
| Joe Mixon ready to roll Missed most of the preseason with a quad injury By: Doug Orth | Tue Sep 3, 11:00 pm
| | Texans Pro Bowl RB Joe Mixon missed the majority of the preseason with a quadriceps injury and was held out of all of the games. Mixon is fully healthy now and displayed explosiveness during a joint practice session with the Los Angeles Rams. Signed to a three-year, $27 million extension after an offseason trade from the Cincinnati Bengals, Mixon is expected to have a heavy workload as a runner and receiver out of the backfield.
“Joe will be Joe,” HC DeMeco Ryans said. “Joe will be doing what he’s done his entire career. I don’t think you’ll see anything different. He’s a strong, physical back. He’s going to get yards. So, I’m excited about seeing Joe run the ball behind our offensive line.” (KPRC - Aaron Wilson)
FFToday's Take: It remains to be seen how productive Mixon will be in Houston after an inefficient back for most of his time in Cincinnati. With that said, Mixon should see the lion's share of backfield touches with Cam Akers (multiple Achilles injuries) and Dameon Pierce (bad fit for OC Bobby Slowik's offense) unlikely to convince the Texans to spread the workload. Consider Mixon a volume-based RB2 with occasional RB1 upside in what should be a high-scoring offense this season.
