2019 Outlook
Depth Chart
While it was tight end George Kittle who broke out and led the team in practically every receiving statistic for the 49ers in 2018, it was good to see that second-round NFL Draft pick Dante Pettis was able to make some decent contributions when he was on the field. Pettis only played in 12 games, starting seven, but his 17.3 yards per reception were quite impressive and he tied Kittle for the team lead with five touchdown receptions.

With the quarterback situation seemingly improved from where it was in 2018, the biggest concern with Pettis is no longer the questionable accuracy of the targets coming his way, but rather the competition he faces. Kittle should still lead the team in targets this season which limits Pettis' upside anyway, but he also faces competition from veterans Marquise Goodwin and Kendrick Bourne, along with incoming second-round draft pick Deebo Samuel, whom some compared to Samuel as a prospect even before he landed in San Francisco. The duplicative nature of much of their skill sets makes both players risky for fantasy purposes, but Pettis' ADP makes him a serious gamble. He's being drafted around players like Alshon Jeffery, Tyler Boyd, Robby Anderson, Allen Robinson - all of whom are proven producers.

While we do expect Pettis to improve with more experience and a clean bill of health as well as the 49ers offense to improve as a whole, Pettis suddenly breaking out to become a WR1 or even a high-end WR2 seems unlikely given the target competition he'll face from the tight ends, running backs and even other wide receivers in this offense.

Marquise Goodwin -- Not a roster lock?
Speedy WR facing crowded competition in Niners camp
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Aug 6, 9:03 am

San Francisco
The Athletic's Matt Barrows doesn't consider Marquise Goodwin a lock to make the 49ers' 53-man roster. Barrows named Dante Pettis, Deebo Samuel, Jalen Hurd, and Trent Taylor as the top four, leaving Goodwin, Jordan Matthews, Kendrick Bourne, and Richie James competing for possibly two spots. (The Athletic)

FFToday's Take: Bourne led the Niners' receivers in receiving a year ago and has been impressing at camp. Matthews has reportedly been steady and James is a youngster with some intrigue. Goodwin couldn't stay healthy last year but was productive in 2017, so stay tuned as the preseason develops.

Dante Pettis showing "marked improvement"
WR has added muscle, more comfortable in offense
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jun 17, 7:15 pm

San Francisco
Jimmy Garoppolo and HC Kyle Shanahan are among those who have noticed marked improvement in Dante Pettis ahead of his second NFL season. “Dante’s body is maturing. He’s coming out of breaks with power, he has speed. It doesn’t look like he’s moving very fast, but he really is. It’s a weird thing for a quarterback to get used to. He’s different than most guys running,” Garoppolo said. “He worked while he was away. He tried to get bigger. He worked more at his routes and he came here with the idea of ‘Hey, I’m not just coming here to get better back in shape, I’m coming here to get better.’” (NBC Sports Bay Area)

FFToday's Take: George Kittle figures to be the primary option in the passing game, yet any fantasy owner who employed Pettis down the stretch last season knows there is room for at least one very viable receiver in this Shanahan-led passing attack. The 49ers added Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd among others this spring, but Pettis should be able to hold off the group for at least a year and perhaps more if he has improved as much as Garoppolo and Shanahan say he has.
