2019 Outlook
Depth Chart
Samuels falls into a common tier of fantasy backs. He's a handcuff that will be a volume driven RB2 should Conner go down, but doesn't have the talent or pedigree to truly challenge for meaningful snaps. Yeah, he was mighty impressive in a late season game against the Patriots, and was decent in Weeks 14 and 16 when Conner was banged up, but when the chips were down in a must-win Week 17 game, Samuels was out-touched 17-9 by a returning Conner. The Steelers added Benny Snell to the mix in the 4th round of the draft, but he's a big effort, limited athlete who projects to be nothing more than a backup. Samuels should see more early season work this year than last, but it simply won't be enough for fantasy relevance short of an injury to Conner.

Injury James Conner not seriously hurt
Left Week 2 with knee injury
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 16, 5:15 pm

Pittburgh Steelers
Multiple teammates believe James Conner's knee injury is not serious. Jaylen Samuels is prepared to start if necessary, but the overall sentiment in the locker room is the issue is manageable. Conner walked through the locker room and appeared to be moving fine. (ESPN - Jeremy Fowler)

FFToday's Take: While this isn't exactly getting clearance from a doctor, it's much better than the alternative. It hasn't been a good start to the season for Conner, but the Steelers may need to rely on him more now than ever with Ben Roethlisberger done for the year. Jaylen Samuels would get the start if Conner misses a game, but it looks like fantasy owners of Conner may have lucked out here.

Jaylen Samuels poised for big role
Steelers see backup RB as jack-of-all-trades offensive weapon
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 5, 6:55 pm

Pittburgh Steelers
Jaylen Samuels is like OC Randy Fichtner’s Christmas toy that he didn’t learn to play with until the following year. Last year, the Steelers wanted to see if Samuels was a professional football player. This year, he’s been a significant part of their offense, whether it’s been the backup running back or, more importantly, that jack-of-all-trades offensive weapon that can line up just about everywhere. Samuels has been a matchup nightmare for the defense in camp because he’s more than just a running back who can catch. (The Athletic - Mark Kaboly)

FFToday's Take: This should be just want the public needed to fire up Samuels' hype train again. Contrary to popular belief, James Conner is most likely locked into another heavy workload. With that said, there are 160-plus empty plays the Steelers must replace with Antonio Brown now in Oakland. Samuels' unique ability to run most of the receiver routes as a running back makes him a good place to start when redistributing those targets and/or plays.

James Conner expecting another big workload
RB doesn't expect workhorse status to change in 2019
By: Doug Orth | Mon Jul 1, 10:50 pm

Pittburgh Steelers
A year after James Conner was the workhorse before getting injured, the Steelers added rookie Benny Snell and perceive a heartier role for pass-catching back Jaylen Samuels. Speaking with NFL Network for an interview, Conner suggested he's preparing for a similar workload to last season. "I'll have a similar role. I'm healthy, first and foremost, I'm 100 percent healthy now. We'll cross that bridge when we get there (in regards to his workload). ... It goes week to week. The game plan will be different each week. I know I'll be a big part of it and have a big role," Conner said. (NFL.com - Kevin Patra)

FFToday's Take: General manager Kevin Colbert suggested the team would utilize something more of a committee backfield in 2019 this spring, but Pittsburgh has long been an offense that likes to rely on one main running back. Conner can obviously make it a moot point with his play on the field. Conner is a good bet to push for 275 to 300 touches if he plays 16 games, thus remaining a high-end RB1 option in fantasy.
