2019 Outlook
Depth Chart
2018 rookie Justin Jackson saw just 65 touches in his first season, but it's important to note that he had just five total carries heading into the team's Week 11 game when Melvin Gordon would sustain an injury that kept him out for four weeks. Over those next four games, Jackson saw a total of 44 touches, including a 19-touch performance in a huge Week 14 victory over the Chiefs in Kansas City. While Austin Ekeler is still the backup to own in Los Angeles, the player who might actually have the best upside in the event of another Gordon injury could very well be Jackson.

His ADP means that he's going undrafted in most leagues, but keep an eye on Jackson in the later rounds of your deep leagues, particularly dynasty startups. Also be sure to prioritize him on your waiver wire late in the season, after bye weeks, once you've established your starters for your fantasy playoff run. Jackson could have serious value down the stretch if Gordon and Ekeler are banged up as they were near the end of 2018.

Injury Chargers rule out Mike Williams, Justin Jackson
Back issue for Williams, calf strain for Jackson
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 27, 3:00 pm

With RB Justin Jackson ruled out due to a calf strain, Chargers HC Anthony Lynn said Melvin Gordon could play on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins in a limited role. Gordon, currently on the NFL’s two-week exempt list, will travel with the team to Miami. (Eric Williams on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Chargers are heading into their matchup with the Dolphins lacking depth. Given the injury to Jackson, Melvin Gordon could get some run in this game although it's likely it won't be much. Troymaine Pope and Detrez Newsome could see action at running back as well. With Travis Benjamin listed as Doubftul, the Chargers will have Keenan Allen, Dontrelle Inman and Geremy Davis as their top three wide receivers.

Injury Melvin Gordon unlikely to play in Week 4
HC doesn't quite shut the door on him playing
By: Doug Orth | Thu Sep 26, 11:55 pm

“Never say never, but doubt he’ll play this weekend.” - Anthony Lynn on Melvin Gordon potentially playing Sunday vs the Dolphins. (NFL Network - Omar Ruiz)

FFToday's Take: Gordon playing this weekend was basically ruled out when reports of his reporting to camp surfaced Wednesday, but this report became a bit more pertinent after Justin Jackson was limited in practice Thursday and popped up one injury report. It's still highly unlikely Gordon plays, but the Chargers also aren't going to run Austin Ekeler into the ground in a game they should win handily. It's a situation to monitor the rest of the weekend.

Injury Melvin Gordon expected to report on Thursday
Not likely to play in Week 4
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 25, 7:10 pm

Running back Melvin Gordon contacted the Los Angeles Chargers and told them he plans to report on Thursday, ending his 64-day holdout, sources confirmed to ESPN. A source tells ESPN's Josina Anderson that Gordon expects 2019 will be his final year with the Chargers. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Gordon is probably tired of losing money while he watches Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson capably fill the rushing needs for the Chargers. Gordon is unlikely to play in Week 4 against Miami but could suit up in Week 5 against the Broncos. His return will obviously affect the fantasy value of Austin Ekeler who currently sits as the No.1 RB in PPR leagues.

Melvin Gordon sorting through trade options
RB has no intention to show up Week 1
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 2, 4:40 pm

Chargers running back Melvin Gordon does not plan to report for Week 1 as he sorts through potential trade options during his holdout, according to a source. My understanding is only a new development would bring him in. (ESPN - Jeremy Fowler)

FFToday's Take: As if it wasn't already obvious, the two sides remain far apart. If Gordon does miss the opener as expected, it's quite likely we may not hear from him again until around Week 10 since that is the time he has to report in order to count this season toward his free-agent clock. Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson figure to see roughly a 60/40 split of the backfield work in his absence. With that kind of workload, Ekeler should be a serviceable RB2 and Jackson should be a decent flex.

Melvin Gordon could sit out the season?
Reportedly prepared to sit out if no new deal is reached
By: Doug Orth | Thu Aug 15, 9:40 pm

Chargers and Melvin Gordon have not made progress towards a new deal, per sources. Gordon still wants to return in time for the regular season, but he is prepared to sit out if no new deal is reached, per source. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: While it is still too early to panic (it is possible Gordon's camp is pushing this information to Schefter), there is certainly reason for concern. Owners drafting over the next couple weeks probably need to assume Gordon isn't going to be ready for the opener at the very least and need to wrap their minds around the possibility of not having him at all if they do take the plunge. Austin Ekeler needs to be moved up boards, while Justin Jackson may now move on the flex radar.

Melvin Gordon's agent requests trade
Team remains firm at their initial offer of approximately $10M/ year
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 1, 11:30 am

Chargers RB Melvin Gordon's agent Damarius Bilbo tells me he requested a trade last wk for his client, after the team remained at their initial offer of aprox $10M/ year. GM Tom Telesco told Bilbo, Gordon is still family, but Bilbo was not given permission to seek trade partners. (Josina Anderson on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The two sides seem dug in. We'll see who blinks first. Gordon's ADP has fallen to RB12 with him being taken somewhere around the end of Round 2 in PPR leagues. The longer the holdout continues, the more his ADP will fall. Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson would handle rushing duties if Gordon's holdout extends into the season.

Melvin Gordon holdout could be lengthy
Proposals exchanged but no progress
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jul 26, 7:45 am

While the two sides have exchanged proposals in recent days, running back Melvin Gordon's holdout now is expected to be prolonged and threatens to last into the season, per sources familiar with the talks. Gordon is in the final year of a rookie contract that is scheduled to pay him $5.6 million this season, but he wants a new deal to put him among the highest-paid running backs in the league. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: Sounds like this negotiation will be going down to the wire and may not be resolved by the time most fantasy drafts are complete. Expect the ADP's of Austin Ekeler (10.08) and Justin Jackson (14.08) to rise as long as Gordon is on the sidelines.
