2021 Outlook
Depth Chart
Let me just start by saying that I think Nick Chubb is one of the most underrated players in the NFL. Since entering into the league in 2018, he's averaged better than 5.0 yards per carry in every season, and has yet to score less than 8 touchdowns. Despite splitting snaps with Kareem Hunt, and missing four games in 2020, Chubb churned out over 1200 total yards and tacked on 12 scores. His speed/power combination is one of the best in the NFL behind only Derrick Henry, and he similarly dominates late in games with Cleveland running out the clock, evidenced by his 7.2 yards -per-carry average in the 2nd half of games. His efficiency and touchdown scoring allowed him to finish in the top 10 in standard scoring leagues to with only 16 receptions.

So what's holding him back from grinding up the NFL even more than he has? Two words...Kareem Hunt. Chubb has the blessing (more rest) and curse (reduced touches) of having an All-Pro for a backfield mate. Chubb simply doesn't play on 3rd downs or clear passing situations, and his 18 targets last year put him around 70th among running backs. A slight dip in running efficiency would be a hit, but on the flip side, an injury to Hunt could let Chubb dominate touches. Clearly Chubb's value lies in standard leagues as long as Hunt is around, but a full season of health gives the former Georgia Bulldog a very good chance at a top-5 season.

Injury Browns activate Kareem Hunt off Covid-19 list
Hunt dealing with ankle issue
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Dec 27, 3:08 pm

Cleveland Browns
#Browns activated the following from COVID-19 reserve: DE Jadeveon Clowney G Drew Forbes S Ronnie Harrison Jr. CB Troy Hill RB Kareem Hunt DT Malik McDowell T Jedrick Wills Jr. LB Mack Wilson They also placed LB Elijah Lee on the list (Mary Kay Cabot on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Hunt hasn't played since Week 14 as he's battled ankle issues and the Covid list. Given his ankle problem, it remains to be seen if he'll be ready to play in Week 17 against the Steelers. Nick Chubb remains the back to own in Cleveland.

Injury Mayfield, Keenum remain out, Nick Mullens to start
Browns QBs' can't get out of Covid protocol
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Dec 20, 10:11 am

Cleveland Browns
#Browns QBs Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum didn’t test out of COVID protocols, so it’ll be Nick Mullens starting today against the #Raiders, per sources. (Tom Silverstein on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Raiders-Browns game originally scheduled for Saturday was moved to Monday night given the Browns had 20-plus players on the Covid list. Mayfield said he's asymptomatic but obviously he hasn't been able to produce a negative test. Without Jarvis Landry, expect to see a lot of Nick Chubb and D'Ernest Johnson against the Raiders.

Injury Next up on the Covid-19 list: Baker Mayfield
Case Keenum expected to start
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 15, 9:46 am

Cleveland Browns
Browns’ QB Baker Mayfield is said to “feel completely normal”, per a source, but he has tested positive for COVID. Now Case Keenum is in line to start Saturday vs. the Raiders, with Nick Mullens as his backup. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Assuming Keenum doesn't land on the list between now and Sunday he will get the start for the Browns against the Raiders. With Jarvis Landry already on the list and Kareem Hunt out due to injury, the Browns will be very short-handed in Week 15. Expect to see a lot of Nick Chubb.

Injury Browns hopeful to have Kareem Hunt in Week 12
Should practice this week
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Nov 22, 12:33 pm

Cleveland Browns
#Browns coach Kevin Stefanski says he should be able to get Kareem Hunt and Jack Conklin back in practice this week. He said he’s hopeful they can face the #Ravens (Mary Kay Cabot on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: D'Ernest Johnson has filled in nicely while Hunt has been sidelined with a calf injury. Hunt hasn't played since Week 6 and his return would push Johnson back to a bench stash. Nick Chubb saw 22 of 30 running back carries for the Browns in Week 11.

Injury Nick Chubb appears likely to return Week 11
Missed Week 10 following positive COVID test
By: Doug Orth | Thu Nov 18, 11:30 pm

Cleveland Browns
Browns OC Alex Van Pelt said things are trending in right direction for guys still on COVID-19 list. RB Nick Chubb, RB/WR Demetric Felton and C Nick Harris are on the list. (Beacon Journal - Nate Ulrich)

FFToday's Take: To be clear, "trending in the right direction" is not the same as coming off the COVID list. Nonetheless, it would be a small upset if Chubb isn't cleared on Friday after testing positive over a week ago. Once he is activated from the COVID list, there's a good chance he will return to his usual workload - assuming his conditioning wasn't compromised by the virus. If he is his usual self, he has a chance to finish as the overall RB1 this week against the Lions.

Injury Nick Chubb, Demetric Felton ruled Out for Week 10
D'Ernest Johnson will start
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 12, 2:55 pm

Cleveland Browns
#Browns running backs Nick Chubb, Demetric Felton, John Kelly declared out Sunday against Patriots (Marla Ridenour on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The matchups isn't great but Johnson should get the bulk of touches at running back for Cleveland this week against the Patriots. New England has given up just 2 rushing TDs to running backs this season. Still, Johnson is likely to get at least 20 touches in this game.

Injury Browns RBs test positive for COVID
Nick Chubb and Demetric Felton could miss Week 10
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Tue Nov 9, 12:52 pm

Cleveland Browns
Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) on Twitter: "Browns’ RBs Nick Chubb and Demetric Felton tested positive for COVID-19, sources tell ESPN. Both players are vaccinated, thus their status for Sunday’s game against New England remains in question. Each player would need two negative tests 24 hours apart to play." (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: D'Ernest Johnson would slot in as the lead back against the Pats. It's a bad situation for the Browns, but Johnson impressed in Week 7 against the Broncos, running for 146 yards and a score in a dominant performance. He would be a borderline RB1 if Chubb is sidelined.
