2022 Outlook
Depth Chart
After ranking third amongst all RB's in receptions in 2020, Hines took a step back last season. Part of that is due to the emergence of Jonathan Taylor, not only as a runner, but as a receiver. It also had something to do with the man at QB. Carson Wentz tended to force throws downfield and has never made good use of his check down options in the passing game. But things change a bit with Matt Ryan at the helm. Last year in Atlanta, RB's accounted for nearly 25% of the target share with Ryan at QB. Some of that was a product of playing behind a suspect o-line and a system of play calls that focused on getting the ball out of Ryan's hands quickly. But throughout his career, he has been a smart passer who gets through his progressions and finds the open man.

All this is to say that Hines may have a chance to bounce back in the stat column. I wouldn't be surprised to see some 21 personnel groupings that will feature Taylor and Hines on the field together, using their versatility to challenge opposing defenses.

While Taylor is clearly the RB1, Hines is a borderline RB3, especially in PPR leagues. Indy is going to run the ball, but they will throw off play action, and Ryan's propensity for throwing to his backs should make Hines a viable weapon once again.

News From The Past 90 Days
Bills and Colts swap backup running backs
Zack Moss to the Colts, Nyheim Hines to the Bills
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Nov 1, 3:00 pm

Buffalo Bills
Trade terms, per source: 🏈RB Zack Moss and a conditional 6th round pick in 2023 to the Colts. 🏈Nyheim Hines to the Bills. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: James Cook has been operating as the backup behind Devin Singletary the last couple of weeks. That role is now in jeopardy with the Nines acquisition. Moss will battle Deon Jackson for a backup role behind Jonathan Taylor. Hines has been fairly quiet this season with only 25 catches for 188 yards. This isn't a dramatic move for his fantasy value but the overall offensive environment is an improvement.

Injury Looking good for Jonathan Taylor, Optimistic on Hines
Nyheim Hines clears concussion protocol
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 21, 1:17 pm

Indianapolis Colts
Reich: "It's looking positive" for Jonathan Taylor to play Sunday. Unsure yet if there will be limitations. Nyheim Hines has cleared concussion protocol. "Feeling optimistic about Nyheim." #Colts (George Bremer on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Colts are likely to be at full strength in their running back room this week against the Titans. We'll see if we get any reports this weekend about restrictions on Taylor but he's trending towards being active and starting in Week 7. How much Hines and Deon Jackson play remains to be seen.

Injury Colts rule out Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines
Indianapolis down their top two running backs
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 15, 12:49 pm

Indianapolis Colts
The #Colts have officially ruled out RBs Nyheim Hines (concussion) and Jonathan Taylor (ankle) this week. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Hines wasn't able to clear the concussion protocol in time while Taylor still isn't over his ankle injury suffered in Week 4. With both running backs on the bench, expect Phillip Lindsay to share time with Deon Jackson. Deon Jackson played 58% of the snaps in Week 5 while saw Lindsay saw 38%.

Injury Jonathan Taylor ruled Out for Week 5
Ankle injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 5, 1:24 pm

Indianapolis Colts
The #Colts ruled out RB Jonathan Taylor (ankle) for tomorrow night vs. the #Broncos. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: With the short turnaround, it wasn't likely Taylor would be ready to go for Week 5 against the Broncos. Phillip Lindsay is expected to get called up from the practice squad and will likely share time with Nyheim Hines. Deon Jackson is also on the roster but mainly plays special teams.

Injury Jonathan Taylor in limbo for Week 5
Star RB dealing with ankle sprain; Colts play on Thursday
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 3, 11:55 pm

Indianapolis Colts
Tests on Colts’ RB Jonathan Taylor’s ankle were negative and he has a chance to play Thursday night vs. Denver, per source. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)

FFToday's Take: It sounds as though Taylor's managers can breathe a sigh of relief. With that said, the short week will make it very difficult for Taylor to play and play well. As of now, managers should expect to get more usage out of Nyheim Hines regardless of whether Taylor goes against Denver. Phillip Lindsay could also assume some of the workload as well. If Taylor plays Thursday, expectations need to be lowered.

Injury Colts downgrade Michael Pittman Jr. to Out for Week 2
Quad injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 17, 12:48 pm

Indianapolis Colts
Colts downgraded WR Michael Pittman Jr. to out for Sunday’s game vs. the Jaguars. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Pittman is dealing with a quad injury that occurred in Wednesday's practice. Alec Pierce (concussion) has already been ruled out. Expect Matt Ryan to lean on Parris Campbell, RB Nyheim Hines and Ashton Dulin in the passing game and a whole lot of Jonathan Taylor on the ground.
