2020 Outlook
Depth Chart
Ronald Jones enters his third season out of USC, and it has already been an interesting career. In his first season, he seemed to have a difficult time picking up the system and therefore did not play much. He only received 23 carries in 9 games, for 44 total rushing yards. Many in the fantasy football community were already labeling him a bust after that season, since there was a lot of hope for him to take over the backfield as a rookie.

He seemed to come in with a much better handle on the offense in his sophomore season, and had 172 carries for 724 yards, a 4.2 yards per carry. The 4.2 average is certainly respectable when the poor offensive line of the Bucs is factored in. He showed both power and speed, and even in the passing game he was fairly effective. He caught 31 of his 40 targets, and only registered one drop. He also averaged 10 yards per reception, an excellent number for a running back.

Despite all of this, and despite the offense being on the verge of an upgrade at quarterback, many are still very low on Jones. He is being drafted around the 7th round, and because he still has the inside track to start at running back, this is an excellent value. He is one of my mid-round running back targets as a result.

However, there are certainly risks. Jones has always been seen as a liability in pass protection, and if he is poor in that area, Brady will not put up with it for long. He will insist on getting a back in the lineup who knows all of the protections perfectly, even if that ends up being a less-talented back like Dare Ogunbowale. On top of that risk, the Bucs did draft Ke'Shawn Vaughn out of Vanderbilt in the third round. While Jones was drafted in the second round, there is still risk that Vaughn becomes the preferred option to start in the backfield.

If we go by the recent coaching decisions of head coach Bruce Arians, he will use all of the backs in various roles this season. That also limits Jones' upside, even if it decreases the risk that he will be completely benched. In the end, Jones is another boom-bust pick, with a role in the offense that is not yet clearly defined. He may be worth the risk in the end, but whether you draft him will likely depend on your risk tolerance and your overall draft plan.

Injury Leonard Fournette expected to start, Rojo gametime decision
Ronald Jones improved in Friday's practice
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Jan 15, 12:27 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bruce Arians says that Ronald Jones improved today in practice and will be a game-time decision with his quad injury Sunday vs. Saints. He expects Leonard Fournette to start Sunday either way. (Greg Auman on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: We should get more clarity on Saturday but it appears Fournette will be handling the majority of work at running back for the Bucs against the Saints. New Orleans has given up the fewest fantasy points to running backs on the season.

#GoBucs RB Ronald Jones (quad) was not at practice during the portion open to the media. RB LeSean McCoy has returned. DT Steve McLendon is back as well. (Rick Stroud on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Jones missed Wildcard Weekend after his quad tightened up during pregame warmups. Arians said today that he hopes Jones will be able to practice later this week. If Jones ends up sitting, it will be the Leonard Fournette show against the Saints on Sunday.

Arians shares more about Ronald Jones on Saturday -- he had a sore quad, didn't feel right before the game. "We'll wait and see," Arians says, when asked if Jones can play against the Saints. (Greg Auman on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Arian noted that Jones was "fine" on Thursday and Friday of last week but Jones never got comfortable with his quad injury during pregame warmups against Washington allowing Leonard Fournette (19-93-1, 4-39 to take on a lead role in the Bucs backfield. We'll likely get clarification on this backfield later in the week.

Injury Ronald Jones activated from COVID-19 list
Bucs RB still nursing broken finger but could play Week 17
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Wed Dec 30, 8:51 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Ronald Jones was activated Tuesday from the reserve/COVID-19 list and is expected to practice Wednesday. He could be back in the Bucs’ lineup for Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Falcons -- and he's still looking for the 1,000-yard milestone. (Tampa Bay Times)

FFToday's Take: Jones has missed the last two games and hasn’t practiced since breaking the pinky finger on his left hand in the Bucs’ 26-14 win over Minnesota on Dec. 13. He had surgery to insert a pin in that finger. HC Bruce Arians said he would like for Jones to get some action Sunday. If he doesn't suit up, we can expect another big workload for Leonard Fournette and some touches for Ke'Shawn Vaughn.

Injury Ronald Jones ruled out for Week 16
Remains on COVID-19 reserve list
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Dec 24, 12:28 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
As expected, Arians says Ronald Jones will miss a second game while he remains on COVID-19 reserve list. Leonard Fournette had two touchdowns last week stepping up into starting role. (Greg Auman on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Jones had surgery on his finger but also remains in the COVID-19 protocol. We should see a lot of Fournette against the Lions as the Bucs are checking in as 9.0 point favorites. Fournette's goaline role and projected volume make him an easy RB2 in Week 16.

Injury Ronald Jones placed on COVID-19 list
Week 15 status in doubt
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 16, 5:00 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bucs coach Bruce Arians said he hoped Ronald Jones could return to practice Thursday or Friday as his finger healed. But now that timetable seems unlikely. Jones is the fourth player to be quarantined this week either for testing positive for COVID-19 or coming into close contact with someone who has the virus. On Tuesday, the Bucs placed placekicker Ryan Succop, punter Bradley Pinion and long snapper Zach Triner on the reserve/COVID-19 list. (Tampa Bay Times)

FFToday's Take: It's possible Jones could be removed from the list in time to face the Falcons this Sunday but it's looking more and more likely that Leonard Fournette will be seeing the bulk of action at running back for the Bucs.

Injury Ronald Jones will have pin inserted in broken pinky
Status for Week 15 uncertain
By: Mike Krueger | Tue Dec 15, 10:43 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
#GoBucs RB Ronald Jones is scheduled today to have a surgical procedure to have a pin placed in his broken pinky finger. (Rick Stroud on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Chris Godwin had a similar procedure recently and missed one game although that injury was on his index finger. If Jones sits in Week 15 against the Falcons we could see some kind of committee of Leonard Fournette (healthy scratch in Wk14), LeSean McCoy and Ke'Shawn Vaughn.

HC: RB "may have fractured a pinky" in Week 14
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 14, 6:30 pm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Bucs coach Bruce Arians says Ronald Jones may have fractured a pinky. Says he's waiting to see if they will need to place a pin in it and what that means. (Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud)

FFToday's Take: Jones likely suffered the injury on his touchdown, but he remained in the game. Leonard Fournette was a healthy scratch in Week 14, so it is unclear at this moment if he would return to a leading role in this backfield of Jones must sit or work in a committee with LeSean McCoy. If Jones plays in Week 15, he'll be a top-20 option versus the Atlanta Falcons, albeit one who may not play much on passing downs.

Injury Leonard Fournette a healthy scratch
LeSean McCoy, Ke'Shawn Vaughn next up
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 13, 11:35 am

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Leonard Fournette a healthy scratch today for Bucs (Jay Glazer on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: With Fournette inactive, we could see LeSean McCoy and Ke'Shawn Vaughn back in the mix. Both have been absent from the field since Week 6. Expect Ronald Jones to handle the bulk of running back work for the Bucs.
