2023 Outlook
Depth Chart
After playing the dashing understudy to Dalvin Cook for a majority of his career, Mattison was resigned this off-season to a two-year deal, as Cook was sent packing. Mattison enters 2023 as the Vikings clear lead back, and he should be their workhorse based on previous usage. While filling in for an injured Cook in previous seasons, Mattison has five 20+ carry games. In those games, Mattison averaged 104 rushing yards, and scored three touchdowns. Throw in at least 24 receiving yards in each game, and you see the kind of numbers Mattison is capable of as an unchallenged three-down starter. Possessing a similar build and skillset to Cook, just with much less wear, it says a lot about Minnesota's confidence in the 5th year back that they would cast off Cook despite possessing a "win now" roster. Based on his poor inefficiency as a change of pace back, the heavy volume should benefit Mattison, and your fantasy team. With a 250-touch floor, dual-threat game, and chance for double digit touchdowns, Mattison is a rock solid RB2 in all formats.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury Alexander Mattison expected to play Week 11
Concussion
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 19, 7:00 am

Minnesota Vikings
Despite spending the week in concussion protocol and being listed as questionable for Sunday night, Vikings’ RB Alexander Mattison is “good to go” and expected to play vs. the Broncos, per source. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: It was expected that Mattison would miss this week but he was able to buck the trend and clear concussion protocol in time to play. He'll likely split time with Ty Chandler which caps the upside of both. Both are weak Flex options even in a plus matchup given the state of the Vikings run game.

Injury Vikings lose Cam Akers to Achilles injury
Second Achilles injury for Akers
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 5, 4:49 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Vikings’ HC Kevin O’Connell told reporters that RB Cam Akers suffered an Achilles injury today. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: This would be the second Achilles injury for Akers. His previous injury came with Rams back in Week 1 of 2021. The Vikings have struggled to run the ball all season and the only other running back to get a carry in this game was Alexander Mattison who finished with a 16-44-0, 2-49-1 line. Ty Chandler could be the next man up but expect a free agent signing or practice squad call-up this week.

Cam Akers on the move to Minnesota
Vikings and Rams swap late-round picks in 2026
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 20, 6:30 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Trade! The #Rams are sending RB Cam Akers to the #Vikings, per sources. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell and OC Wes Phillips were with Cam Akers in L.A., so he should be up to speed quickly and help Minnesota’s backfield. (Tom Pelissero on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Akers time with the Rams has finally come to an end. The sides had their differences last season and just two weeks into the 2023 season, the veteran running back is on the move. Alexander Mattison and Vikings have struggled to their running game going in the first two games so perhaps Akers can provide a spark. How much he cuts into Mattison's role remains to be seen.
