2019 Outlook

With long-time back-up/vulture Latavius Murray off to be annoying in New Orleans, the handcuff to Dalvin Cook remains a fluid situation. With the 3rd round rookie Mattison, and unknown Mike Boone and underwhelming Lions cast-off Ameer Abdullah the current options, it's a true guessing game to see who picks up the leftover touches. The Vikings invested a significant pick in Mattison, and his profile and production at Boise State tell me he's the best bet to carry the load should something happen to Cook. A multi-year starter in college, Mattison caught 60 passes in his career, and what he lacks in breakaway speed, makes up for in athleticism and power. There have already been some respectable puff pieces about Mattison this offseason, and if he can earn the trust of Zimmer and the coaches, he could be in for a heavy workload if Cook falls. Upside and feature role combine to make Mattison a solid handcuff option, and a must-draft for Cook owners.

Injury Cook, Mattison back at practice Wednesday
Top two RBs back for Minnesota
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jan 1, 2:15 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison are back at practice, with helmets, taking their usual 1st/2nd team reps w the centers during the individual portion. Eric Kendricks was present but sans helmet. No Mackensie Alexander, Andrew Sendejo and Stephen Weatherly at practice. (Courtney Cronin on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: It sounds like the Vikings will have their top two running backs on the field for their Wildcard matchup against the Saints. New Orleans only gave up 7 rushing TDs to RBs this year but Cook should get the bulk of volume and be a top RB play on the slate.

Injury Vikings expected to rest starters in Week 17
Cousins, Cook not expected to play
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Dec 27, 10:00 am

Minnesota Vikings
While I’m told the Vikings haven’t finalized their plan for Sunday, they’re leaning heavily towards resting a bulk of their starters, including Kirk Cousins, per league source. Team viewing Chicago week as a bye in terms of getting guys rest/healthy for Jan. (Courtney Cronin on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: With Vikings locked into the 6th seed, there's no reason for Cousins and players nursing injuries to play. Expect Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison to be inactive as well. Sean Mannion will likely be the starter at quarterback with Mike Boone and Ameer Abdullah handling the bulk of running back duties.

Injury Cook, Mattison miss practice Friday
Mattison dealing with ankle injury
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Dec 20, 1:10 pm

Minnesota Vikings
I’m told Alexander Mattison dealing with an ankle sprain that happened on first play of last drive vs Detroit. Dealing with swelling and pain right now, hasn’t practiced. Seems like a long shot to play. (Andrew Krammer on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Vikings don't play until Monday night giving all of their injured players another day to heal but at this point in time it seems likely that Mike Boone and Ameer Abdullah will handle the majority of running back touches against the Packers. Boone is shaping up as a mid-range RB2 in Week 16.

Injury Dalvin Cook unlikely to play vs. Packers
Shoulder injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Dec 19, 7:00 am

Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook is unlikely to play in the big showdown with the Green Bay Packers on Monday night because of a shoulder injury, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday. The Vikings are even leaning toward shutting down Cook for the last two regular-season games, hoping to have him ready for the playoffs. (ESPN)

FFToday's Take: We've been under the assumption this would be the case for Cook ever since Schefter suggested at halftime of Monday night football that Cook wouldn't play in Week 16. Alexander Mattison dealing with an ankle injury, Minnesota is likely to roll with Mike Boone and Ameer Abdullah at running back with Abdullah playing on some passing downs. Boone is shaping up as an RB2.

Injury Dalvin Cook fine for Week 16?
Shoulder injury
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 16, 8:15 pm

Minnesota Vikings
“Yeah, it feels good today.” - HC Mike Zimmer on if Dalvin Cook could play through injury suffered (in Week 15). “It’s too early, but the extra day helps. We’ll just have to see how the week goes," Zimmer said. (

FFToday's Take: The Vikings play on Monday night in Week 16, which means owners who don't have the entire backfield locked up (Cook, Alexander Mattison and Mike Boone) may be forced to go in another direction if Cook's status hasn't been resolved by the weekend. Owners are advised to keep an eye out for updates throughout the week, especially on Cook and Mattison.

Injury Adam Thielen not practicing Wednesday
Vikings get limited practice from Dalvin Cook
By: Antonio D'Arcangelis | Wed Dec 4, 5:55 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Ben Goessling (@GoesslingStrib) on Twitter: "The Vikings, who are effectively going through a walk through this afternoon, already issued their injury report. Adam Thielen, Riley Reiff and Linval Joseph did not practice; Dalvin Cook, Everson Griffen, Eric Wilson, Shamar Stephen and Harrison Smith were limited." (Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Lots of injuries looming for the Vikings, who lost a tough one to the Seahawks on MNF. Alexander Mattison should be on everyone's radar for Wek 14 if Cook can't go, and Diggs remains a lock-n-load WR1 if Thielen is out again.

Injury Dalvin Cook indicates he'll play in Week 14
Shoulder injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Dec 4, 12:30 pm

Minnesota Vikings
Dalvin Cook’s shoulder injury is a pain tolerance deal, and he said he’s been told there shouldn’t be a risk of injuring it worse. Reiterates he’ll play Sunday vs Lions. “I gotta work on” holding onto the ball when hit there. (Andrew Krammer on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Cook left last week's game with a shoulder injury but maintains's his stance that he'll play against the Lions. If he sits, Alexander Mattison would become an obvious plug an play in Week 14.
