2020 Outlook

I was leery about Montgomery last summer when he was the top rookie runner being selected, sometimes in the top-three rounds and those fears came to fruition as Chicago seemed unwilling and unable to give Montgomery the workhorse role he needed to be a fantasy difference maker. Tarik Cohen siphoned nearly all of the backfield receptions away and despite finishing 14th in rushing attempts; Montgomery's efficiency with those touches (3.7 yards-per-carry) was dreadful. The wiggle and power he displayed in the pre-season (where he and the entire Chicago offense were mothballed for a month) was nowhere to be found in the regular season as he failed to generate yardage on his own. When you have a bad offensive line and only get what's blocked, bad things happen.

I really can't say I'm overly bullish on Montgomery's fantasy prospects in Year 2. Cohen is still there to own the majority of the 3rd down and hurry up receptions, and while Montgomery's rushing volume is sure to hover around the top-10 at the position, the offensive line hasn't made enough meaningful additions to move the needle from their low-tier 2019 rating. Chicago just can't seem to figure out any type of identity or consistency on offense, and maybe Foles helps here, but short of a major shift on offense, or an injury to Cohen, Montgomery feels like an upside RB3 at best in 2020.

Injury Bears fear torn ACL for Tarik Cohen
Absence will be felt on offense and special teams
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Sep 28, 8:50 am

Chicgao Bears
The #Bears fear RB Tarik Cohen has a torn ACL that would end his season, while a big QB decision looms... but how much of a decision is it? (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Cohen's had a relatively quiet start to the 2020 season, failing to find the endzone in the first three games. With Cohen out, the Bears could use David Montgomery more in the passing game. Montgomery's fantasy stock is on the rise.

Injury David Montgomery expected to play
Groin injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 13, 7:03 am

Chicgao Bears
#Bears RB David Montgomery, listed as questionable with a groin injury, is expected to play today vs the #Lions, source says. He should receive his full workload. … WR Cordarrelle Patterson (knee, questionable) is also good to go. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Montgomery's groin injury looked bad a couple weeks ago but he's made a good enough recovery to suit up in Week 1. He's in Flex, low-end RB2 consideration this week against the Lions.

Injury David Montgomery on track for Week 1
Quick recovery from groin injury

Bears RB David Montgomery was a full participant in today’s practice. He’s on track to play Sunday against the Lions. (ESPN - Field Yates)

FFToday's Take: It would take a huge leap of faith to play Montgomery this week, but his fantasy owners could not expected to get him back so soon after the worst was initially feared about two weeks ago. The second-year back reportedly dropped a bit of weight this season and he locked into a ton of volume once again, making him a serviceable RB2 with decent upside if HC Matt Nagy quits trying to prove he's the smartest guy in the room and plays to the strengths of his team better in 2020.

Jaguars release Leonard Fournette
Tried to trade him during the Spring
By: Mike Krueger | Mon Aug 31, 9:22 am

Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars released RB Leonard Fournette. Jaguars did all they could to trade RB Leonard Fournette in the spring and then again this summer. But as Jaguars’ HC Doug Marrone said today: "We couldn't get anything, a fifth, a sixth, anything. We couldn't get anything." (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Heading into the final year of his contract, we heard the trade rumors this off-season but after not being able to strike a deal, Jacksonville is moving on from it's workhorse running back. Chicago could be a landing spot for Fournette now that David Montgomery (groin) is scheduled to miss a 2-4 weeks. You're likely to see a RBBC in Jacksonville as they shift away from a standard workhorse running back.

Injury David Montgomery expected to miss 2-4 weeks
Groin injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 27, 11:00 am

Chicgao Bears
#Bears starting RB David Montgomery, who went down in practice yesterday with a groin injury, is expected to be out 2-4 weeks, source said. That gives him a chance of being out on the field for the opener vs. the #Lions. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Despite being locked in a starting running Montgomery has a poor outlook by fantasy owners given his poor showing last season (242-889-6; 25-185-1) when he finished as the RB24 in PPR leagues and RB33 in FPts/G. Expect his current ADP (RB23) to fall in drafts this weekend.

Injury David Montgomery leaves practice with groin injury
Slipped when taking a handoff
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Aug 26, 1:21 pm

Chicgao Bears
Bears coach Matt Nagy says he does not know the severity of David Montgomery's groin injury, but @AdamSchefter reports the team is optimistic. Awaiting further test results. (Jeff Dickerson on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: As seen in the video, Montgomery is in obvious pain after slipping and grabbing his left leg. Groin injuries can be tricky and could lead to an extended absence. Right now, Tarik Cohen, Cordarrelle Patterson, Ryan Nall and rookie Artavis Pierce are all taking reps at the running back position. It's likely the Bears would sign a free agent if Montgomery is to miss significant time.

David Montgomery slimmer and trimmer
Attributes healthier eating to sleeker physique
By: Doug Orth | Mon Aug 24, 4:50 pm

Chicgao Bears
David Montgomery lost around five pounds in the offseason, now weighing in at 218. Montgomery attributes his slimmer physique to a newfound consciousness about the type of food he eats. While he partook in his favorite junk foods as a rookie-spicy beef jerky, swiss cheese and donuts-his new regimen focused on healthy eating. "I was a lot slower than I know I was capable of moving at," said Montgomery, "and it affected the game. I kind of let myself get in the way of myself as far as what I ate last year. I didn't really care. I was a rookie. I was just eating whatever, but now it's definitely a main focal point in my everyday life. It's just being sure I put the right things in my body so it can carry over to the field." (

FFToday's Take: Montgomery had all of the volume (242 carries) he could've asked for as a rookie, but a combination of poor blocking and a relative lack of explosiveness cost him. Chicago didn't give him much help in the offseason, but it sounds like Montgomery intends to do what he can on his end to improve on his 889 rushing yards. With no one else on the roster pushing him for an early-down role and Chicago's defensive expected to bounce back in 2020, he should be a consistent fantasy RB2 based on expected volume alone.
