2020 Outlook
Depth Chart
2019 rookie breakout wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a Jones Fracture (broken foot) on June 16th and was originally expected to miss 12 to 16 weeks, but Samuel claims he "might only miss 10 weeks." Players almost always over-exaggerate their own return dates, but it's good to hear that Samuel is feeling confident on his timetable.

The reality is that even if Samuel were completely healthy, there's not a great chance that he suddenly breaks into being an upper-echelon fantasy wide receiver. It's not that he lacks the skill to be there, but the 49ers offense just does not pass the ball enough to give both Samuel and Kittle the type of volume that they'd need to be top producers at their positions. Kittle is a proven elite-level performer at tight end so his target volume isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Therefore it's Samuel who is likely to remain at the mid-level WR2 range for realistic upside.

Even if Samuel does return and is ready for Week 1, he could be dealing with an injury that limits his explosiveness, which is one of his most important assets as a player. That could significantly hamper his fantasy success this season, especially early in the year. Obviously this has driven Samuel's ADP down, but he's still going around the range of players who are much safer options.

Injury Deebo Samuel could miss multiple games
Strained hamstring on first touch of Week 14
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 14, 7:50 pm

San Francisco
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said WR Deebo Samuel will be "out awhile" with his hamstring strain. He didn't want to put a timeline on it. (ESPN - Nick Wagoner)

FFToday's Take: Not good. With only two weeks left to play in most fantasy leagues, owners may need to cut ties with Samuel if head coach Kyle Shanahan expands on the seriousneess of his receiver's injury. Considering how tricky hamstring injuries can be and the slim odds the 49ers have for making the playoffs now, he may sit for the rest of the season. Brandon Aiyuk stepped up with 10 catches against Washington and can be considered a must-start in Week 15 versus the Dallas Cowboys.

Injury Deebo Samuel not expected to play in Week 10
Sidelined since Week 7 with hamstring injury
By: Doug Orth | Thu Nov 12, 11:35 pm

San Francisco
Kyle Shanahan on KNBR said Deebo Samuel (hamstring) was a longshot for the upcoming game in New Orleans. It's looking as if Week 12 is more realistic for him. (The Athletic - Matt Barrows)

FFToday's Take: The 49ers have an open week after facing the Saints, so it doesn't make much sense to rush Samuel back. Brandon Aiyuk should be good to go in Week 10 and figures to be the focal point of the passing attack. Hopefully, the extra time allows Samuel to come back healthy and stay that way for a San Francisco offense that needs some good news during a season that has seen injury wipe out most of its offensive stars.

Injury Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel placed on COVID-19 list
Both out for Week 9
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 4, 7:33 pm

San Francisco
#49ers LT Trent Williams and WRs Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel will be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list as close contacts, source says. They’re out for tomorrow vs #Packers. (Mike Garafolo on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The Packers and 49ers game scheduled for Thursday night is going to feature a lot of backup players from both sides. The 49ers are down to Trent Taylor, Richie James and Kevin White at wide receiver. The Packers will be without running backs Jamaal Williams and AJ Dillon.

Injury Kendrick Bourne tests positive for COVID-19
49ers thin at wide receiver
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 4, 11:38 am

San Francisco
49ers’ WR Kendrick Bourne tested positive, per source. (Adam Teicher on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: The 49ers have an issue at wide receiver. Deebo Samuel has already been ruled out for Week 9 against the Packers and Dante Pettis was waived yesterday. Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Taylor are the top two on the depth chart at this point.
