2023 Outlook

After a disaster of a rookie season and a regime change in Chicago, there was legit talk of the Bears moving on from Fields. They eventually stuck with the inexperienced Ohio State product and watched him literally run circles around the NFL in his second season. Finishing seventh in the league with 1,143 yards rushing, Fields was very likely a league winner waiver wire pickup for more than a few fantasy squads. But while he dazzled as a runner there still is much work to be done as a passer.

While not exactly flush with receiving talent, Fields still did have some decent weapons in Cole Kmet, Darnell Mooney and Chase Claypool. Yes, those three pale in comparison to the talent he threw to as a Buckeye, but Fields continued to be incredibly raw as a passer. In his 588 NFL attempts he's struggled to complete 60% of his throws, and while he remains an elite athlete that is in desperate need of more reps, my concern is that he might be developing pocket habits that will be hard to break. His 160 rush attempts from 2022 were second only to Jalen Hurts, but many of Fields' attempts were out of self-preservation. Unable to get to his 2nd or 3rd reads because of pressure (perceived or real), Fields didn't spend much time in the pocket. His 318 passing attempts were over 400 fewer than league leader Tom Brady!

It's unlikely that Fields will be able to replicate the rushing totals from 2022, so he's going to have to take the next step as a passer to remain a top-10 fantasy option. Chicago has put a clear emphasis on upgrading around him, as they dealt for receiver D.J. Moore, drafted o-lineman Darnell Wright 10th overall, and added guard Nate Davis in free agency. The Bears have committed to developing Fields, and in his defense, he did improve his efficiency in the 2nd half of 2022. He's locked in as the franchise signal caller and an incremental increase in his passing numbers to go with his elite rushing floor, make him a clear QB1 going forward.

Injury Justin Fields expected to start Week 11
Thumb injury
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 15, 7:08 am

Chicgao Bears
Sources: #Bears QB Justin Fields, out the last month with a dislocated thumb, is expected to start Sunday vs the #Lions, assuming today’s practice goes well. The key has been regaining grip strength, and Fields was nearly there before TNF. With a solid practice, he will be. (Ian Rapoport on X)

FFToday's Take: It sounds like Fields was close in Week 10 and without any setbacks in practice, will start against Detroit in Week 11. This will send Tyson Bagent to the bench and hopefully breathe some life into D.J. Moore who hasn't scored or topped 55 yards since Week 5.

Injury Khalil Herbert expected to miss Week 10
Ankle injury
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Nov 9, 7:19 am

Chicgao Bears
From @gmfb: The #Bears are expected to be without QB Justin Fields and RB Khalil Herbert again tonight, while the #Panthers get one key player back on defense. @nflnetwork (Tom Pelissero on X)

FFToday's Take: Herbert is still on IR and it appears he will remain there this week as he recovers from an ankle injury. If he sits, expect D'Onta Foreman to lead the Bears backfield against the Panthers with Roschon Johnson mixing in. Foreman will be on the RB2 radar against the Panthers who've given up the 2nd most fantasy points to the position.

Injury Justin Fields Doubtful for Week 10
Tyson Bagent gets another start
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Nov 8, 2:00 pm

Chicgao Bears
Bears are listing QB Justin Fields as doubtful for Thursday night vs. Carolina. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Fields is dealing with a thumb injury and isn't able to grip the football well enough to play. The Bears will give Tyson Bagent another start. Bagent displayed some rushing ability (8-70-0) in his last start against the Saints which helped him finish as the QB6 on the week. The Panthers have given up the 3rd fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks.

Injury Justin Fields out for at least one more game
Missed Week 7 with thumb injury
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 23, 11:55 pm

Chicgao Bears
#Bears coach Matt Eberflus says "(Tyson Bagent) will be our starter." Calls Justin Fields doubtful for Sunday night's game at #Chargers. Says JF1 continues to progress. (Chicago Tribune - Brad Biggs)

FFToday's Take: It would not be terribly surprising if Fields was sidelined in Week 9 as well, but it appears as if he is closer to returning than not at this point. Bagent handled himself nicely in his first NFL start in Week 7, playing error-free ball while completing 72.4% of his passes. The Chargers have underachieved yet again this year, but Bagent will likely need to do more to keep up with Justin Herbert & Co. in Week 8.

Injury Justin Fields likely to miss multiple games
Dislocated thumb in Week 6 vs. Vikings
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 16, 5:25 pm

Chicgao Bears
Bears coach Matt Eberflus says QB Justin Fields is doubtful for this week with a dislocated thumb, but no overall timetable. "It's really going to come down to grip strength." (NFL Network - Ian Rapoport)

FFToday's Take: Chicago's bye isn't until Week 13, so the Bears and fantasy managers alike will not get any break in his recovery timeline from that. Tyson Bagent came on in relief of Fields against Minnesota and didn't do much of note (10-of-14 for 83 yards and an interception) despite scoring the team's only touchdown on a short run midway through the fourth quarter. Bagent is mostly a pocket passer that won't provide much of a rushing threat, making the Raiders and Chargers good streaming DST options if Fields cannot play over the next two weeks.
