Despite topping the 1,000-yard mark in each of his four seasons with Pittsburgh, the Steelers chose not to exercise the former first-round pick's fifth-year option and showed no interest in re-signing him before he hit the open market. Interest around the NFL wasn't that high, either, forcing Harris (eye) to settle for a one-year deal with the Bolts. Initially, it looked like he might be penciled in as the lead back, but that ended abruptly when LA drafted Hampton. The veteran then did himself no favors by injuring his eye in a fireworks mishap, and he has yet to practice in camp with no firm return date.
While it's not believed to be a serious injury, Harris is doubtless falling behind Hampton with each missed day of practice and perhaps into more of a complementary role than the timeshare he formed with Jaylen Warren in Pittsburgh. Even with that, Harris should be safely ahead of Kimani Vidal for the backup job. This injury aside, the Alabama product has been a picture of durability since joining the NFL in 2021, appearing in all 68 games and logging 1,277 combined touches (319 per year). He isn't explosive (3.9 YPC in his career), but he's strong, is effective in short-yardage and goal-line situations, and he has good hands. As an RB4, Harris holds some appeal.

Chargers take Najee Harris off NFI list RB reportedly has a chance to play in Week 1 By: Doug Orth | Tue Aug 26, 11:40 pm

| | Sources: The #Chargers have activated RB Najee Harris (eye) off the NFI list, making him eligible to play as early as Week 1 vs the #Chiefs in Brazil. (Jordan Schultz)
FFToday's Take: About the only people who have a good idea about how this might play out are the Chargers' coaching and medical staff. The last time that Harris did anything of note on a football field was June. Making matters even worse, there is no way to know for sure how much of an effect the eye injury will have on Harris' ability to see the whole and/or his peripheral vision. As uneasy a feeling as it is, Omarion Hampton still very much deserves to be drafted in the third round of most 12-team drafts.

| Najee Harris ready for Week 1? Yet to do anything meaningful on the practice field By: Mike Krueger | Sat Aug 23, 11:50 pm

| | Los Angeles Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz said Saturday night that he is hopeful running back Najee Harris will play Week 1. "Najee's doing great, going through all the medical processes," Hortiz said. "But he's on track, and I think he should be able to go, hopefully in Week 1."
Harris has been on the non-football injury/illness list for all of training camp after a July 4 fireworks mishap. (ESPN)
FFToday's Take: Harris returned to practice on August 12th but hasn't done much of anything expect work on the side with the training staff. He's a veteran, but it's hard to imagine him being ready Week 1 with so little time on the practice field with a new team. Given the lack of concrete news on his situation, all options remain on the table at this point including him landing on IR start the season or being active against the Chiefs in Week 1.

| Najee Harris likely to being training camp on NFI list Eye injury By: Mike Krueger | Wed Jul 16, 4:22 pm

| | #Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said Najee Harris (eye) will likely begin training camp on NFI. Harris is expected to report to The Bolt later today, per Hortiz. Harris has been receiving treatment from doctors at Stanford. (Daniel Popper on X)
FFToday's Take: 4th of July gone wrong. Harris' stay on the NFI list is expected to be short according to Ian Rapoport. The fact that Harris will be missing at least a portion of camp will knock his ADP down a bit for the time being as he competes with rookie Omarion Hampton for touches in the Chargers backfield.
