Hubbard's production begins where McCaffrey's ends, literally. RB Mike Davis is gone to division rival Atlanta, leaving Hubbard as the likely handcuff for McCaffrey owners everywhere. A full-on stud in 2019 as a sophomore at OK State, Hubbard posted 2,084 rushing yards and 21 TD, showing he can handle a big workload, sort of. That season was followed by two offseason surgeries, and an ankle injury brought his days as a Cowboy to an end in 2020. To be blunt, there are durability concerns. But his role with the Panthers as McCaffrey's backup could keep him fresh and serve as a positive for him early in his career.

The truth is right now Hubbard doesn't have the size or bulk to break many tackles at the NFL level, and he lacks the top end speed to outrun defenders. He has the vision and one-cut ability to get up field in a zone scheme, but his limited receiving skills will keep him from getting to the open spaces on the field where he's at his best. If he can learn quickly to play in pass protection and improve as a receiver, there could be a scenario where OC Joe Brady could have Hubbard and McCaffrey on the field together, but he's likely an RB2 or RB3 with big play upside only if McCaffrey runs into health issues again.

Injury Christian McCaffrey lands on IR
Will miss the next three games
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 16, 1:19 pm

Carolina Panthers
The #Panthers placed Christian McCaffrey on Injured Reserve, knocking him out three games. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: McCaffrey (hamstring) was originally injured in Week 3 and will now miss the next three games. In his absence, Chuba Hubbard will continue to work as Carolina's lead back and be weekly RB2 with the Vikings, Giants and Falcons on the upcoming schedule.

Injury Christian McCaffrey listed as Doubtful
Limited in practice all week
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 8, 1:42 pm

Carolina Panthers
Matt Rhule says he wasn’t “going to play any games” with the injury status. Christian McCaffrey was limited all week, so he’s doubtful for the game. For what it’s worth, this seems like it’s better in the long haul for him and the team. (Joe Person on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: McCaffrey got in some limited work this week but he's unlikely to play in Week 5 meaning Chuba Hubbard, Royce Freeman and Rodney Smith will handling running back duties against the Eagles. Smith took some receiving work (5 tgts, 5-48) last week against the Cowboys and is a wet blanket on Hubbard's fantasy value.

Injury Christian McCaffrey avoiding IR for now
Suffered hamstring injury in Week 3
By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 27, 11:30 pm

Carolina Panthers
Panthers HC Matt Rhule says RB Christian McCaffrey will not be placed on IR with his hamstring injury. Seems to indicate they think he has a chance to be back in less than 3 weeks. ( - Cameron Wolfe)

FFToday's Take: It suggests the Panthers believe the injury is a minor one since an IR stint would cause him to miss three games. They are also opening themselves up for second-guessing and a repeat of last year's injury-plagued season if they are wrong. While McCaffrey recovers, Chuba Hubbard is expected to receive the lion's share of backfield work in Carolina. Royce Freeman will also see some work, although he should only be viewed as a handcuff to Hubbard for now.

Injury Christian McCaffrey departs early in Week 3
Strained hamstring
By: Doug Orth | Fri Sep 24, 1:00 am

Carolina Panthers
Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey left Thursday night's game against the Texans with a strained hamstring. HC Matt Rhule said the team doesn't know the severity of McCaffrey's injury. The star running back will undergo additional tests. Quarterback Sam Darnold said he talked to McCaffrey after the game and described him as "sad." Darnold also had a message for McCaffrey, believing he'll be back this season. "Just that I'm thinking of him and to take his time," he said. "We'll be all right without him. Obviously, we want him back. But I want him to take his time and make sure he's good for the end of the season." (ESPN - David Newton)

FFToday's Take: This report makes it sound as if McCaffrey will need more than a three-week stint on injured reserve. Fantasy managers should expect at least that much as soft-tissue injuries often require multiple-week absences. Chuba Hubbard did a fine job filling in for CMC against the Texans and should be considered a strong RB2 option for however long McCaffrey is out. Royce Freeman will see some work as well, but probably not enough for fantasy purposes.
