While firmly behind A.J. Brown in the Eagles' offensive pecking order, DeVonta Smith has established himself as one of, if not the best, team WR2 in the business. He's averaging over 1,000 yards per season in his three professional seasons, and while his 19 touchdowns are only an average number, he's proven himself to be a reliable fantasy WR2.
Pre-draft worries about Smith's size leading to potential injuries at the professional level seem to have been put to rest as Smith has not missed a single game due to injury yet in his career. In fact, he wouldn't have any games missed at all had the Eagles not rested many of their starters in Week 17 prior to the playoffs.
The last time we saw Smith on the field was in the Eagles' surprising blowout playoff loss to the Buccaneers when saw 12 targets, catching eight of them for 148 yards - a game in which the Eagles were playing without Brown. While the Eagles rarely fall behind on the scoreboard by that much, Smith's stat line showed that he is capable of producing not just WR2 numbers, but potentially WR1 numbers in a hypothetical scenario where Brown were to miss time.
This type of contingent upside is an interesting and perhaps underappreciated benefit for those drafting Smith right now. Sure, his ADP means that the Eagles will probably need to continue to overperform in order for him to exceed his draft-day cost, but he's certainly capable of returning value as a mid-to-low-end fantasy WR2.

A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith likely to play in Week 6 Eagles top two WRs both missed Week 4 with injuries By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 7, 7:40 pm
| | My understanding is the #eagles are expecting to have their top WRs A.J. Brown (hamstring) and DeVonta Smith (concussion) back this week vs the #browns. (Underdog Fantasy - James Palmer)
FFToday's Take: Philadelphia's Week 5 bye came at a great time. Brown injured his hamstring late in the week before Week 2 and has not played since. Smith was concussed in Week 3 and sat out Week 4. With both receivers back, the Eagles' offense should quickly return to the unit that rolled up 410 total yards against the Packers in Brazil to begin the season. Brown boasts WR1 upside every time he takes the field, while Smith is not far off that - especially given his increased slot usage so far in 2024.
| A.J. Brown likely to miss some time Expected to miss "a couple of weeks" By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 16, 11:50 pm
| | On ESPN MNF broadcast, Lisa Salters reports Eagles WR A.J. Brown - who is OUT tonight after his hamstring tightened up in practice Friday - expects to miss “a couple of weeks” with his injury. (ESPN - Stephania Bell)
FFToday's Take: There are conflicting reports on this one, as at least one source suggests Brown could have pushed to play in the team's Monday Night Football loss to the Falcons. Brown was ruled out early Sunday, however, which makes it more likely that he could miss at least another game. Fantasy managers would be wise to prepare for Brown to miss Weeks 3-4 just in case. DeVonta Smith figures to benefit the most in fantasy from his absence.
| A.J. Brown downgraded to Out for Week 2 Hamstring injury By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 15, 12:00 pm
| | #Eagles WR A.J. Brown has been downgraded to out with a hamstring injury for Monday night. (Ian Rapoport on X)
FFToday's Take: The only good thing about this news is that we get it before the early games are played. DeVonta Smith gets a nice boost as does TE Dallas Goedert. Jahan Dotson isn't a recommended option.
| Trade: Eagles land Commanders' WR Jahan Dotson Washington gets draft pick compensation By: Mike Krueger | Thu Aug 22, 11:30 am
| | A rare in-division trade: Washington is sending former first-round pick Jahan Dotson and a fifth-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and two seventh-round picks, per sources. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: The Eagles have been looking to solidify their third receiver position for a few years now. Perhaps Dotson can fill that void. He was the 16th pick back in 2022 but has yet to make a big impact in the league and wasn't standing out in training camp with the Commanders this pre-season. Given the star-power the Eagles have at wide receiver, Dotson will need an injury to A.J. Brown or DeVonta Smith to have any significant fantasy relevance.
