2024 Outlook
Depth Chart
Robinson finished as the RB21 in 2023, slightly ahead of his new teammate Austin Ekeler (RB24). His usage as a runner decreased to 12 carries per game from 17 carries per game in 2022. However, he saw a significant increase in his targets, jumping from just 12 in his rookie season to 43 in his second season. With former backfield mate Antonio Gibson now in New England, there was hope that Robinson might ascend to the bell cow status many had anticipated.

However, this offseason brought significant changes in Washington, including a complete overhaul of the coaching staff and front office, leading to the signing of Ekeler. Although Ekeler had a disappointing 2023 season marked by injuries in Los Angeles, he remains a big name that the new staff actively pursued.

Robinson and Ekeler are being drafted at nearly identical average draft positions, indicating that the market is undecided about how this backfield will shake out. The most likely scenario is a split backfield, with Ekeler being more utilized on passing downs and probably in the red zone, given his 25 rushing touchdowns between the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

That scenario leaves Robinson as a player whose skill set is best utilized between the 20s, on early downs, and late in games when the Commanders are ahead and looking to run out the clock. However, with just four wins in 2023, the 2024 Commanders don't figure to be a team that is ahead late in too many games.

Robinson has the potential to be an every-down back in the NFL, but barring injuries, this doesn't look like the season where that will happen. As a result, he is a low-upside option who fantasy managers will probably have on their benches for most of the season.

Injury Brian Robinson Jr. Out again with hamstring injury
Missed practice on Friday
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Nov 8, 4:00 pm

Washington Redskins
Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. was ruled out for Week 10 vs. the Steelers. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Robinson was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday then sat on Friday before being ruled Out for Week 10. With Robinson out last week, the Commanders used three running backs including Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. Ekeler will work as the lead back but all three should get touches capping their upside.

Injury Brian Robinson Jr. Inactive for Week 9
Hamstring injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Nov 3, 11:20 am

Washington Redskins
Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. is inactive today. Commanders expected he would be able to play but the pre-game warmup did not go well. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Over the weekend, it seemed like Robinson was on track to play but his pre-game workout didn't satisfy the coaches and trainers. With Robinson out, the Commanders will lean on Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols to handle the running back work. Ekeler is a viable RB2 option, especially in PPR leagues while McNichols is a low-end Flex option.

Injury Brian Robinson Jr. downgraded to Out for Week 6
Missed practice all week with knee injury
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 12, 4:00 pm

Washington Redskins
Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr., who hadn’t practiced this week due to a knee injury, was downgraded to out for Sunday’s game at Baltimore. (Adam Schefter on X)

FFToday's Take: Robinson didn't practice all week so this move isn't a huge surprise. With Robinson out, expect Washington to turn to Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols at running back against the Ravens. Ekeler is a viable RB2, especially in PPR leagues while McNichols will be a boom-or-bust TD dependent option in deeper formats.

Injury Brian Robinson Jr. will be a gametime decision
Trending in the right direction
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 4, 12:21 pm

Washington Redskins
Dan Quinn said RB Austin Ekeler has cleared the concussion protocol and will be good for Sunday. He added that RB Brian Robinson Jr. is trending in the right direction, but he'll be a game-time decision. WR Noah Brown - OUT DE Clelin Ferrell - OUT (Nicki Jhabvala on X)

FFToday's Take: Robinson missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a knee issue but did return on Friday. Even if he does play, it wouldn't be surprising to see Ekeler get a little more work than usual given Robinson won't be 100 percent. The Commanders play the Browns in the early window on Sunday, so we'll have a good idea of his status on Sunday morning.

Injury Austin Ekeler ruled Out for Week 4, concussion
Didn't travel with the team to Arizona
By: Mike Krueger | Wed Sep 25, 3:35 pm

Washington Redskins
Dan Quinn said RB Austin Ekeler (concussion) is OUT for Sunday’s game in Arizona. (Nicki Jhabvala on X)

FFToday's Take: Ekeler played just 13 snaps out of 59 snaps before leaving Week 3's game against the Bengals. In his absence, expect a heavy dose of Brian Robinson Jr. against the Cardinals. Jeremy McNichols will also be worked in but likely won't see enough volume to be fantasy relevant.
