Mason was an absolute beast for the first quarter of the season in place of the injured Chrisian McCaffery. Piling up 100-plus yards in three of the first four games of the season Mason all but faded from relevance after Week 6. Injuries of his own cost him time on the field, and the 49ers felt like a late-round pick was worth more than keeping him around as injury insurance. The former undrafted free agent joins the Vikings as a direct backup to veteran Aaron Jones. Largely a product of the 49ers run scheme, Mason doesn't possess enough elite traits to threaten playing time, and makes for a reliable, yet underwhelming handcuff for Jones owners as he offers next to nothing as a receiver.

Aaron Jones lands on injured reserve Week 2 hamstring injury puts Jordan Mason in the spotlight By: Doug Orth | Tue Sep 16, 11:00 pm

| | The Vikings are placing starting RB Aaron Jones on Injured Reserve, knocking him out four games, per me and @TomPelissero. He has a hamstring injury. Jordan Mason now becomes RB1. Cam Akers is signing to the practice squad. (NFL Network - Ian Rapoport)
FFToday's Take: Jones will not be eligible to return until Week 8 because of Minnesota's Week 6 bye. While Akers will almost certainly find his way into a few carries, the Vikings traded for Mason this offseason with an eye on him complementing Jones for as long as the 30-year-old could stay healthy and featuring him if he was unable to avoid injury. Minnesota's offense is in a world of hurt right now, but it seems quite likely that the Vikings will lean heavily on the run with Carson Wentz replacing J.J. McCarthy (ankle) for at least the next couple of weeks.

| Aaron Jones expected to miss at least one game Suffered hamstring injury in Week 2 By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 15, 5:25 pm

| | Vikings RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) is unlikely to play this week vs. Bengals, per coach Kevin O'Connell. (ESPN.com - Kevin Seifert)
FFToday's Take: After somewhat surprisingly holding up while handling a career-high 306 touches over 17 games last season, the 30-year-old Jones was always a poor bet to stay healthy all of this season. His expected absence - likely to be in the 2-3 week range - allows Jordan Mason to take on a featured role. The good news is that he will face the Bengals in his first game with the promise of a heavy workload. The bad news is that he likely to do so with a Minnesota offense that has struggled through two weeks and will turn to backup Carson Wentz with J.J. McCarthy expected to miss time with a sprained ankle.
