In an offense that primarily features the rushing attack and has a target hog in Michael Pittman Jr., it's hard for a secondary receiver to carve out a fantasy-relevant role.
Regardless, Josh Downs' rookie season should be regarded as a success. He established himself as the Colts' primary slot receiver, a role he will reprise in 2024. He was a full-time player for the vast majority of the season and was able to earn his fair share of targets with 6-plus in eight games.
Downs showed flashes of true talent in his rookie campaign. At a WR62 price tag, he is an interesting late-round swing given his full-time role and opportunity to grow as a talent. However, expectations should be realistic. Flex-level production would be a big win for Downs.

Michael Pittman Jr. out multiple weeks with back injury Colts injuries are mounting By: Mike Krueger | Wed Oct 9, 5:38 pm
| | Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. is dealing with a back injury that is now expected to sideline him multiple weeks, per sources. Injured reserve is an option. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: The Colts are dealing with injuries to Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor and now Pittman heading into Week 6. Josh Downs (toe) missed practice on Wednesday, rookie Adonai Mitchell and Alec Pierce are likely to be the top three receivers while Pittman is out. Assuming he plays, and Joe Flacco starts at QB, Downs is an easy WR2 this week against the Titans.
| Anthony Richardson downgraded to Doubtful for Week 5 Joe Flacco expected to start By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 5, 1:39 pm
| | The #Colts downgraded Anthony Richardson to doubtful. Joe Flacco in line to start Sunday vs. Jacksonville. (Tom Pelissero on X)
FFToday's Take: Richardson (oblique) got in limited practices all week but he didn't do much on Friday. Flacco at QB gives life to Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs who both saw a 32% target share last week with Flacco playing most of the game. The Jaguars have given up the 5th most fantasy points to receivers this season.
| Josh Downs ruled Out for Week 1 Missed practice all week By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 6, 1:02 pm
| | The Colts on Friday ruled out wide receiver Josh Downs (ankle) for their Week 1 game against the Houston Texans on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Downs, who sustained an ankle injury during an Aug. 7 training camp practice, did not participate in practice this week. Head coach Shane Steichen said Downs is progressing well and added the team hopes to have him back sooner rather than later. (Colts.com)
FFToday's Take: Downs is going to have to get some practice time in before getting on the field on Sunday's. Expect rookie Adonai Mitchell and Alec Pierce to have a larger role in Downs' absence but both are nothing more than flex options in an offense that may have limited pass attempts.
| Josh Downs rehabbing well Suffered high-ankle sprain about a month ago By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 2, 7:40 pm
| | Josh Downs ‘progressing well’ while rehabbing high ankle sprain. No indication if he’ll practice Wed. (FOX 59 - Mike Chappell)
FFToday's Take: Fantasy managers should get a pretty good idea about his Week 1 availability based on his practice participation level on Wednesday. Even if he cannot play this week or next, he needs to be a high-priority target in the later rounds. Early camp reports suggested he looked the best of all the Indy receivers, including Michael Pittman Jr. Downs may begin the season as a WR5/6, but he is one of the best bets to become a weekly starter among players drafted after pick 100.
| High ankle sprain for WR Josh Downs Colts wideout injured in training camp By: Mike Krueger | Wed Aug 7, 12:59 pm
| | #Colts WR Josh Downs suffered a high ankle sprain during practice today, per source. The outlook right now is that Downs could miss about a month but the Colts are sorting that out.
A key piece to Colts offense goes down. (Jeremy Fowler on X)
FFToday's Take: This injury is going to impact Downs into the regular season even if he's available Week 1. High ankle sprains typically take 8-plus weeks to get back to full strength. Downs is the Colts primary slot receiver but his ADP should take a hit on this news.
