There are solid rookie seasons, and then there are the historic ones former Hawkeye Sam LaPorta put up last season. He wasn't only good for a rookie, he was the No.1 scoring fantasy tight end in any format imaginable. His 86-889-10 line on 120 targets put him in rarefied air in NFL history. LaPorta was thrust into an early season role as a receiver with the suspension to Jameson Williams, and continued to be the dance partner to St. Brown as the season continued. Not only did he also provide elite blocking, but was able to pile up 21 receptions, 178 yards and a score in the playoffs with a comically large brace on an injured knee. His historic start has already made him one of the best at his position, and with continuity in scheme and personnel, there is every reason to make LaPorta one of the first tight ends off the board.

Sam LaPorta nursing shoulder injury Day-to-day; "hopeful" for Week 11 By: Doug Orth | Mon Nov 11, 7:10 pm
| | Campbell said Sam LaPorta is day to day with the shoulder injury and he's "hopeful" he can play this week (DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman)
FFToday's Take: LaPorta has not come close to repeating his rookie season, although the three best games of his 2024 campaign have come over the last five contests. Volume has been the primary issue this year; he has no more than six targets in any game after averaging 7.8 down the stretch in 2023. While Detroit would likely spread LaPorta's targets among Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Jahmyr Gibbs in Week 11 versus the Jaguars if he is ruled out, Brock Wright could be worth starting in deeper leagues against one of the most accommodating defenses defending the tight end.
| Sprained ankle for Sam LaPorta TE was in and out after he was carted off the field in first half By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 23, 5:00 pm
| | Lions HC Dan Campbell said he considers TE Sam LaPorta day-to-day with a sprained ankle. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)
FFToday's Take: This sounds like the best-case scenario for LaPorta after he was carted off the field right before halftime. With that said, his practice reports this week will be more telling than anything Campbell says during a Monday presser. Brock Wright was highly involved in the first half (four catches) and would likely be worth streaming in Week 4 against the Seahawks. His fantasy managers will want to have a backup plan in place since Detroit will be playing on Monday night.
