Tampa Bay added another Pac 12 (RIP) player to their offense, selecting former Oregon running back Bucky Irving. In the eyes of the Bucs coaching staff, Irving will ideally be able to take some work off White's plate. Tampa Bay's coaches and front office have made it clear that they want to reduce White's workload. They gave Chase Edmonds and Sean Tucker tryouts last season to play this complementary role but neither met expectations and White remained the bell-cow.
The question becomes, can Irving be the secondary option in this backfield? Although he struggled in athletic testing, his production in college indicates that he could be an effective back in the NFL. This is especially true as a pass-catcher. Irving was the FBS leader in receptions among RBs last season.
At this point, Irving is nothing more than a late-round flier. His value is primarily driven by the fact that he has little competition for the RB2 job in Tampa Bay.

Bucs going with the hot hand approach at RB? Rachaad White expected to play By: Mike Krueger | Thu Oct 17, 2:15 pm
| | Bucs coach Todd Bowles says they will go with the “hot hand” at RB but expects all three to play Monday: Rachaad White, Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker. (Rick Stroud on X)
FFToday's Take: Tampa Bay plays Monday night and it appears White will be back on the field. If you believe Bowles, we're likely to see all three running backs against the Ravens and difficult to project who will see the most work. White is likely to get the start but has been extremely inefficient throughout his career but has excelled in the passing game. The Bucs are currently 4-point underdogs to Baltimore.
| Rachaad White a gametime decision for Week 6 Limited in practice with foot issue By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 11, 2:44 pm
| | Sounds like Jalen McMillan will be able to play Sunday after missing last week with a hamstring injury. Bowles said Rachaad White will be a game-time decision. (Greg Auman on X)
FFToday's Take: White was limited in practice this week with a foot issue then downgraded on Thursday to DNP. If he misses, we should see an increased role for Bucky Irving who would have strong RB2 value against the Saints. Sean Tucker is third on the depth chart.
| Bucky Irving misses practice, says he'll play Sunday Hamstring injury By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 26, 12:20 pm
| | Bucky Irving, limited Wednesday with a hamstring injury, did not practice today. Irving declines to say how or when he hurt his hamstring but reiterates: I’ll be ready for the game on Sunday.” (Greg Auman on X)
FFToday's Take: Missing a Thursday practice is never a good sign and players are always optimistic about their availability. We'll get a better idea of Bucky's true status after practice on Friday. Rachaad White has been highly inefficient this season but should still get a decent workload against the Eagles on Sunday.
| Bucky Irving making push for more playing time HC: Rookie RB has "earned more snaps moving forward" By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 23, 5:30 pm
| | Todd Bowles says rookie RB Bucky Irving has earned more snaps going forward. (Buccaneers.com - Scott Smith)
FFToday's Take: Irving (6.2 yards per carry) has been a far superior runner to Rachaad White (2.1) through three weeks. White is so gifted as a receiving option out of the backfield that he will likely continue seeing a heavy dose of work on passing downs, but no one should be surprised if HC Todd Bowles opts for a hot-hand approach on running downs. White has quickly become more of a dicey RB2 option, while Irving has emerged as a serviceable flex with upside.
