Each week when compiling this
report, I take into consideration not only the individual players
mentioned, but also the state of their teams and their opponents,
team schedules, historical player performance, inclement weather
(when applicable), and of course, injuries. This is a dynamic,
stat-driven article that aims to assist you in making the right
roster decisions for your fantasy squad. Your feedback is important
to me, so please keep the emails coming. Got a specific roster
question relative to your team? Fire
away.
Happy New Year! To those of you still active, congratulations
on making it to the championship game.
Quarterbacks
Start 'Em:
Quarterbacks Who Will Outperform Relative
To Their Draft Position And Recent Hype
Vince Young @ SEA
Young let owners down last week by following one of his best games
(3 TD passes vs. Miami) with his worst performance of the season:
8 of 21 for 89 yards, 2 INTs and a fumble vs. San Diego. Even
though this game is very much about Chris Johnson’s pursuit of
2,000 rushing yards, I still think Young will bounce back and
play well in Seattle. The Seahawks have lost 3 straight and have
been outscored 106 – 24 in that stretch. On the season, Seattle
has allowed 27 passing TDs and an average of 250.4 passing YPG.
Brett Favre vs. NYG
Favre is coming off an incredible half against the Bears - 285
of his 321 passing yards came in the second half and overtime.
Overall, he was 26 of 40 with 2 TDs and 0 INTs. With 3 TD passes
this week, Favre can move into a third-place tie in Vikings history
for the most passing TDs in a single season. He can pull it off
against a demoralized, visiting Giants team that has surrendered
27 aerial scores this season.
Matt Schaub vs. NE
Schaub has thrown for a career-high 4,467 passing yards –
which lead the NFL. He has completed 68.4 percent of his passes,
27 TDs, 14 INTs and a career-high 99.1 QB rating. In his only
game previous against NE (as a member of the Falcons, 10/9/05),
Schaub threw for 298 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs. Start him with confidence
against a weak Patriots secondary that has given up 23 passing
TDs this year. New England will likely rest their better players
which makes Schaub’s day appear even brighter.
Jay Cutler @ DET
Cutler is proof that every QB who faces the Lions deserves a spot
on the SCR start ‘em list. All kidding aside, his performance
on Monday against the Vikings showed even more than what we expected
of him when he was traded to Chicago prior to this season. Against
Minnesota he was 20 of 35 for 273 yards, 4 TDs and 1 INT. He’s
got upside this week against the NFLs worst pass defense; the
division rival Lions have given up 31 aerial TDs and 265.4 passing
YPG.
Bench 'Em:
Quarterbacks Who Will Under Perform
Relative To Their Draft Position And Recent Hype
Forget about Carson this week.
Carson Palmer @ NYJ
Forget about Palmer this week. It’s impossible to know what
a head coach will do in this situation, but considering Palmer’s
match up and the likelihood that he will not see a full workload,
he is not an option to consider. The Jets and their #1 ranked
pass defense allows just 163.9 passing YPG; they have given up
just 8 TDs while intercepting 16 passes this season.
Peyton Manning @ BUF
Peyton Manning needs 153 passing yards to break the Colts’
single-season franchise high of 4,557 yards (2004), but will he
get there? In case you somehow missed it, last week Manning was
pulled in the 3rd quarter so it would be a shock if he stays in
the game that far this week. Apparently, this is the price we
pay getting quality production from Colts starters for 15 weeks.
Matt Ryan @ TB
Barring a late setback, Ryan is on schedule to start this week,
but might not be the best option for your fantasy squad. Since
returning from injury, Ryan has completed just 49.3% of his passes
over the last 2 games, but has 4 TD and 0 INT in that span. After
a rough mid season stretch where he threw multiple interceptions
in 4 of 5 games, he has now not thrown an interception since November
15. Keep in mind that the Bucs have won 2 straight and amazingly
took down the mighty Saints last week! Despite allowing 26 aerial
TDs, their defense is playing better and teams average just 206.9
passing YPG against them.
