2022 Outlook
Depth Chart
Plucked off the scrap heap before last season on a one-year, prove-it deal, Conner went from designated short-yardage/goal-line back to primary ballcarrier when Chase Edmonds got hurt. He handled the role admirably, finishing second to Jonathan Taylor (18) in rushing TDs (15), and was rewarded with a new three-year deal that cements his status as the lead back in Arizona.

For all that, there are still significant questions about Conner's ability to hold up as a bell cow over an entire season -- after five NFL campaigns he's still never appeared in every game in a season and has missed a combined 16 games during that stretch -- as well as a lack of explosiveness. Conner managed just 3.7 yards per carry last year, and he finished below 4.0 in five of his final six games, so his style is more about wearing you down than delivering big plays.

One thing working in Conner's favor is the depth chart, which is light on proven commodities or threats to usurp his touches from week to week. He's a capable receiver as well, which allows him to stay on the field regardless of down and distance. Conner has the whiff of a midrange or low-end RB2, though he carries significant injury risk.

News From The Past 90 Days
Injury James Conner expected to be OK for Week 3
Suffered ankle injury in Week 2; considered day-to-day
By: Doug Orth | Tue Sep 20, 11:55 pm

Arizona Cardinals
Kingsbury said RB James Conner will be day to day with the ankle injury. (Darren Urban on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Conner mustered only 25 yards on seven carries and 26 yards on two catches before exiting early in the third quarter against the Raiders. Expect the team to take it easy on him in practice this week before giving him the nod in Week 3 against the Rams. Conner is unlikely to have much of a fantasy ceiling in that contest, but the good news is that he has drawn 10 targets in just over five quarters of action. That kind of involvement in the passing game should keep him on the RB2 radar.

Eno Benjamin continues to draw praise
Third-year RB making strong push to back up James Conner
By: Doug Orth | Tue Aug 9, 11:50 pm

Arizona Cardinals
The marriage between player and team was rocky. Eno Benjamin was inactive every game of his first year, and even into last season, it looked like the back's future would probably be somewhere besides where he became a college star. It's what makes Benjamin's spot now so surprising. No player on the roster has been praised more this offseason than Benjamin. And not the baseline coach-speak praise Kingsbury can sometimes dole out, but legitimate compliments to a player who he wouldn't have before. "I would've never expected him to come this far," coach Kliff Kingsbury said. Early on I didn't know if he could figure it out. Professionalism and work ethic and understanding his role and all those things. Each year he has just gotten progressively better. He's one of the hardest workers on the team now. Always upbeat, always into it. Just really come a long way." (AZcardinals.com - Darren Urban)

FFToday's Take: Kingsbury has routinely praised Benjamin this offseason, as have some of his teammates. Benjamin started getting into Kingsbury's good graces toward the end of last season and appears to be pretty close to securing the backup job to James Conner. While it may be too much to ask for Benjamin to assume the same role Chase Edmonds has held in this offense, his skill-set makes it a strong possibility. Fantasy managers need to make sure he is a priority near the end of drafts.
