2022 Outlook
Depth Chart
A bright spot in an otherwise dreary season for Chicago, Montgomery would likely have had a career year if not for a four-game absence due to a knee injury. Before getting hurt in Week 4, Montgomery already had two 100+ yard games, and 3 touchdowns. While his rushing numbers sunk down the stretch, rookie quarterback Justin Fields peppered him with targets. Buoyed by the 10th most touches in the NFL, Montgomery was a solid RB2 option for 2021.

So, what can we expect in 2022 for the 4th-year back? Well for starters, he is one of the few three-down workhorse backs in the NFL, with only 6th round pick Khalil Herbert behind him. Although he desperately needs Fields to progress to truly move beyond a mid-tier RB2, Montgomery will get enough volume to remain in the fantasy starter conversation. His overall numbers are capped by a lack of efficiency, and likely growing pains of the offense. There is also a chance the new administration gives a longer, more consistent look at Herbert as a cheaper, long-term option. With a chance to set a career high in receptions, I do like Montgomery a round or two more in PPR than I do in standard leagues.

David Montgomery sticking around?
GM hopeful of keeping RB on the roster for a while longer
By: Doug Orth | Tue Jan 10, 4:45 pm

Chicgao Bears
"I've always wanted to keep David." - Bears GM Ryan Poles on RB David Montgomery. He said the next step is trying to find "common ground" on a contract. Montgomery's play style fits the identity that the Bears want. (The Athletic - Adam Jahns)

FFToday's Take: The primary question here is whether Poles hopes Montgomery will accept a 1A/1B arrangement with Khalil Herbert or if Montgomery wants a backfield to himself. The Bears will have the cap space to match just about any offer Montgomery gets in free agency, but he will ultimately need to decide if sharing backfield chores with Herbert is what he wants for the foreseeable future.

Khalil Herbert close to return
Has been sidelined with hip injury since Week 9
By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 19, 11:55 pm

Chicgao Bears
Khalil Herbert (hip) will be designated for a return from injured reserve this week and rejoin the Bears in practice, Matt Eberflus said. (670 The Score - Chris Emma)

FFToday's Take: Considering Herbert will likely be playing for the first time in almost two months this month, there is a decent chance he won't serve as a true 1B to David Montgomery's 1A status. With that said, a lot of that figures to be determined in how he practices this week. Before his injury, Herbert was regularly handling about 10 carries per game. If he is active against Buffalo this weekend, fantasy managers should consider him as a volatile but high-upside flex option.

FFToday's Take: Herbert's production has taken a hit since Justin Fields started monopolizing the running game about five weeks ago, but he was still one of the better stories of the season so far - especially in Weeks 3 and 4 when David Montgomery was injured. With Herbert out of the picture - possibly for the rest of the year - Montgomery should return to a workhorse role and be considered a strong RB2 option at worst moving forward. Trestan Ebner could work into the mix as well, but he is unlikely to be all that relevant for fantasy purposes this year.
