2022 Outlook
Depth Chart
Samuel was a breakout star for the 49ers last season, amassing 1,405 yards on 77 receptions -- his 18.2 yards per catch were the most in the NFL among players with more than 25 catches -- while adding another 365 yards on 59 carries. He also scored 14 touchdowns. He's a true difference maker and was recognized with a spot on the All-Pro First Team alongside Cooper Kupp and Davante Adams. Samuel has already proven he can make things happen anywhere on the field, so there's no reason to think that Lance won't be able to feed him the ball the same way Jimmy G did.

Of course, there is one slight problem: he asked to be traded on April 20, and while he did report for the team's mandatory minicamp, he hasn't backed off his request. The 49ers believe they can find common ground and have balked at the idea of trading a 26-year-old superstar, but the rubber won't meet the road until July 26, which is the official reporting date for San Francisco's training camp. The current CBA has made holdouts less frequent with mandatory fines that cannot be rescinded, but Samuel is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is in line for big-time money, so we'll see how it shakes out.

For now, it seems the safest course is to assume that Samuel plays for the 49ers in 2022, though his long-term prognosis is murkier. If Samuel is in uniform, he should be the centerpiece of San Francisco's offense and a top-10 fantasy receiver.

Injury Deebo Samuel expected to play
Thigh bruise
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 4, 6:37 am

San Francisco
49ers WR Deebo Samuel, listed as questionable for Sunday due to a deep thigh bruise, plans to play vs. Miami, per source. The 49ers didn’t think Samuel would be able to play until Friday, but he has made big improvements and, barring a pre-game setback, he plans to go today. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Deebo seemed iffy to play throughout the week getting in limited practices on Wednesday and Friday while missing on Thursday. It's safe to wonder if he will be a full-go in this game making him a risky WR2 against the Dolphins.

Injury Christian McCaffrey back at practice Thursday
Missed practice Wednesday
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Dec 1, 6:04 pm

San Francisco
Christian McCaffrey said he dodged a bullet with his knee issue, said he’ll play in full Sunday. “I feel great,” he said. (Matt Barrows on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: McCaffrey missed practice Wednesday with a knee injury but apparently is planning on playing this week against the Dolphins. Elijah Mitchell has been put on the shelf for at least the next six weeks, meaning McCaffrey should see around 20 touches in this game. We could see more of Deebo Samuel in the backfield this week as well.

Injury Deebo Samuel out for Week 9, hamstring injury
Missed practice all week
By: Mike Krueger | Fri Oct 28, 4:37 pm

San Francisco
49ers ruled out WR Deebo Samuel for Sunday’s game vs. the Rams due to his hamstring injury. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Deebo missed practice this week and will miss Week 9. That likely means more work for Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk and tight end George Kittle. San Francisco has a bye in Week 9 which will give Deebo two weeks to rest.

Injury Deebo Samuel day-to-day
Suffered hamstring injury in Week 7
By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 24, 6:45 pm

San Francisco

FFToday's Take: The 49ers are eyeing a Week 9 bye with a winnable game against the Rams next up on the schedule, so the team could go the safe route here if they want. In such a case, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle would be in line to see sizable bumps in their target shares. Christian McCaffrey could also absorb the bulk of Samuel's likely workload as well with another week to process the playbook. If Samuel is cleared to play, however, he is well worth a start in fantasy and should be considered a strong WR2 option.

Panthers trade Christian McCaffrey to 49ers
Carolina receives multiple Day 2 draft picks in 2023
By: Mike Krueger | Thu Oct 20, 11:24 am

Carolina Panthers
Sources: The #Panthers are trading star RB Christian McCaffrey to the #49ers, as SF adds a major offensive weapon. Full terms: -- The #49ers get star RB Christian McCaffrey. -- The #Panthers get a 2nd round pick in 2023, a third-rounder in 2023, and a fourth-round pick in 2023. Plus, a fifth-rounder in 2024. Massive. (Ian Rapoport on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: This is quite a haul for a running back but McCaffrey is arguably the best running back in the league. This is also a nice boost for his fantasy value but not as big as it might seem. McCaffrey is already RB4 in PPR scoring but his touchdown outlook is definitely going to increase on his new team. Jeff Wilson has lost a huge chunk of value and we'll see how much this impacts the running of Deebo Samuel. D'Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard are likely to share carries in Carolina in the wake of McCaffrey leaving.

Injury Elijah Mitchell leaves Week 1 with knee injury
Left locker room with a brace on his right leg
By: Mike Krueger | Sun Sep 11, 4:58 pm

San Francisco
Saw #49ers RB Elijah Mitchell leaving the locker room with a substantial brace on his right leg. He was not bending it as he was slowly making his way to the bus, but he was not on crutches. (Jennifer Lee Chan on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Mitchell (6-41-0) was bothered by various injuries last season so leaving early in the first game of 2022 isn't going to help his injury-prone label. He missed a good portion of training camp this season with a hamstring injury. With rookie Tyrion Davis-Price inactive, The 49ers turned to Deebo Samuel (8-59-1) and Jeff Wilson (9-22) as their main running backs against the Bears.
