If there's one player that has been adversely affected by the arrival of McCaffrey, it's Samuel. Rewind the clock to 2021 and the South Carolina alum was probably the focal point of the offense. He caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards and 6 TDs, and he added 365 yards and 8 TDs on 59 carries. Over the last two years, his numbers have dipped, averaging 762 yards and 4.5 TDs as a receiver and 229 yards and 4 TDs as a runner. While those aren't bad numbers, his Swiss Army Knife appeal was lessened by the arrival of a player with an equally rare combination of skills.
For a time this offseason, it appeared the 49ers were ready to move on from Samuel with trade rumors aplenty leading up to (and even during) the draft. He remains on the roster, though, and there's no reason to think he'll be moved in-season. Given the state of his contract, the team's salary cap, and ongoing questions about Brandon Aiyuk's future, it's certainly possible he's entering his final season by the Bay. Whether that adds any extra motivation is unknown, but it's something to consider.
Samuel has had some issues staying healthy, due in part to his ultra physical style of play, having never played every game in a season during his five-year career. It's not enough to devalue him much, though, and even with declining production he's a possible low-end No. 2 fantasy wideout.

Christian McCaffrey expected to play Week 10 limited in practice By: Mike Krueger | Thu Nov 7, 6:34 pm
| | "He's been awesome these last 2 days. Hopefully that continues to go well. I expect to get him out there." - Kyle Shanahan on Christian McCaffrey's status for Sunday (Via Tolbert & Copes) (KNBR on X)
FFToday's Take: McCaffrey has been listed as limited in practice the last two days but it sounds like he's trending towards paying against Tampa Bay in Week 10. How much work he will get is still in question but if he's on the field, fantasy owners should get him in their lineup. Jordan Mason (shoulder) was limited in practice on Thursday as was Deebo Samuel (ribs).
| Deebo Samuel expected to play Week 8 Illness By: Mike Krueger | Sat Oct 26, 11:12 pm
| | 49ers WR Deebo Samuel, listed as questionable for Sunday night due a wrist injury and the illness that left him hospitalized last week, is expected to play vs. the Cowboys, per source. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: Deebo logged a grand total of 4 snaps last week and was later hospitalized with pneumonia. How much stamina he has this week is anybody's guess. The 49ers and Cowboys play Sunday which adds another wrinkle for fantasy owners. He'll be an uneasy WR2 play in Week 8.
| Deebo Samuel dealing with pneumonia No timeline for his return By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 21, 11:40 pm
| | 49ers WR Deebo Samuel has been hospitalized due to pneumonia and fluid in his lungs. There is no timeline for his return. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)
FFToday's Take: It is anyone's guess as to whether Samuel felt ill before the game, but it would seem likely since he only played four snaps in Week 7. That is a problem considering pneumonia is contagious, so we might be reading about other 49ers coming down with it in the coming days or weeks. At any rate, Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing will likely be needed for important roles in Week 8 with Samuel likely out and moving forward after Brandon Aiyuk (knee) was lost for the year over the weekend.
| Brandon Aiyuk done for the year Torn ACL and MCL By: Doug Orth | Mon Oct 21, 7:10 pm
| | 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk suffered a season-ending knee injury on Sunday, tests confirmed. (FOX Sports - Jordan Schultz)
FFToday's Take: Even though Aiyuk was far from the fantasy force this season as he has been in years past, he will be difficult to replace even as first-round rookie Ricky Pearsall made his NFL debut in Week 7. Jauan Jennings (hip) will likely move into the starting lineup opposite Deebo Samuel (illness), although neither player is in great shape right now. Jennings should be the bigger priority if he is available on waivers, but Pearsall might end up being the more valuable property as he gets more comfortable in the offense.
| Deebo Samuel expected to play in Week 4 Calf injury By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 28, 11:28 pm
| | San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel is expected to play Sunday against the New England Patriots, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Samuel missed the 49ers' loss to the Los Angeles Rams last weekend with a calf injury. (ESPN)
FFToday's Take: Deebo missed last week with a calf issue but is expected to play along with TE George Kittle (hamstring) in Week 4. The two returning pass catchers offer a nice boost to QB Brock Purdy who is on the low-end QB1 radar. It remains to be seen if Deebo will be limited in his return, but he's a viable WR2 play if at full strength.
| George Kittle expected to play in Week 4 TE missed Week 3 with a hamstring injury By: Mike Krueger | Fri Sep 27, 4:57 pm
| | 49ers TE George Kittle and QB Brock Purdy are off the injury report and expected to play Sunday vs. the Patriots.
Deebo Samuel is being listed as questionable for Sunday. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: The 49ers will get at least one of their offensive weapons back and may get Deebo back as well. Kittle missed Week 3 with a hamstring injury and Deebo has missed the last two games with a calf issue. Samuel practiced on a limited basis both Thursday and Friday. We should get more info on his status Saturday evening or Sunday morning.
| George Kittle misses practice Thursday, hamstring 49ers down three offensive weapons By: Mike Krueger | Thu Sep 19, 4:08 pm
| | 49ers TE George Kittle was not spotted at practice today and is experiencing tightness in his hamstring, per source. With no practice today, his status for Sunday’s game vs. the Rams is in question. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: Yet another injury for San Fransisco. In addition to Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel, the 49ers are likely to be without Kittle for their Week 3 matchup against the Rams. Eric Saubert has been working as the backup tight end but has just 3 targets in two games.
| Deebo Samuel expected to miss multiple games Suffered a calf strain in Week 2 By: Doug Orth | Mon Sep 16, 11:30 pm
| | More: 49ers WR Deebo Samuel strained his calf Sunday and is expected to miss a couple weeks, per HC Kyle Shanahan. (ESPN - Adam Schefter)
FFToday's Take: A "couple weeks" suggests that Samuel is dealing with a Grade 1 strain, since a Grade 2 strain usually means an athlete will be sidelined for at least a month. San Francisco will almost certainly rely more heavily on George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk in the passing game now without Samuel around. Jauan Jennings will start in Samuel's place and could be worth starting in deeper leagues. Considering how often Samuel was seeing work out of the backfield, look for rookie Isaac Guerendo to spell Jordan Mason.
| Christian McCaffrey headed to IR, out next four games Calf tightness, Achilles tendinitis By: Mike Krueger | Sat Sep 14, 1:15 pm
| | ESPN sources: 49ers officially are placing All-Pro RB Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve due to his calf tightness and Achilles tendinitis. McCaffrey now will miss the next four games, at least, before the team assesses whether he can return in mid-October. (Adam Schefter on X)
FFToday's Take: We got word yesterday this may happen and now it has. McCaffrey was the overwhelming No.1 pick in fantasy football this season after the team projected this pre-season that McCaffrey to be fine for Week 1. That wasn't the case. Jordan Mason is looking more and more like a league winner with each passing day. Deebo Samuel Samuel should take on more of the rushing workload in the short-term until the team becomes more comfortable with rookie Isaac Guerendo who missed a good chunk of camp with an injury of his own.
