Opinions of Aiyuk have been all over the map since the 49ers made him a first-round pick in 2020, especially when his much-anticipated breakout in 2021 got off to an extremely rocky start. It's time to move past that. The Arizona State product led the team in targets (114), receptions (78), and yards (1,015) last year while appearing in all 17 games for the second straight year, which was a refreshing development on a team that battled key injuries all season long. His eight touchdowns were also a career high, though he trailed George Kittle (11) in that department.
The 49ers exercised Aiyuk's fifth-year option during the offseason, and the arrow looks to be pointed up entering Year 4. Still, it's worth noting that Aiyuk didn't have huge numbers with Purdy under center, topping 80 yards just twice in the then-rookie's eight starts despite Samuel missing several games with an ankle injury. Although he's arguably a safer choice than his teammate, Aiyuk is better suited to a WR3 role with the hope that he can ascend into WR2 territory.

 Deebo Samuel out next two games, shoulder injury

FFToday's Take: The 49ers have a bye in Week 9 so the earliest we could see Deebo back on the field is Week 10 against the Jaguars. In the meantime, expect Brandon Aiyuk to be the top wideout in San Francisco with increased opportunities for Jauan Jennings. McCaffrey appears to be trending towards playing Monday night against the Vikings but remains a gametime decision.

Samuel's ribs aren't the issue. It's the knee injury, which cropped up after the Giants game, that's been problematic. He missed WED & THURS practices, was limited today. (Matt Barrows on Twitter)
FFToday's Take: It seems the 49ers will get Aiyuk back in the mix after missing Week 3 with a shoulder injury. We'll have to wait for confirmation later this weekend on Deebo and running back Elijah Mitchell who injured his knee in practice on Thursday. If he sits, Jordan Mason would elevate into the No.2 role behind Christian McCaffrey.

FFToday's Take: After injuring his shoulder in Week 2, the 49ers have decided to play it safe on a short week and sit one of their better offensive players. With Aiyuk out, Deebo Samuel might see some increased usage but don't be surprised if TE George Kittle and running back Elijah Mitchell get more work in this game.

FFToday's Take: Aiyuk was limited on Tuesday with a shoulder injury and it sounds like he's a true gametime decision. The fact that the 49ers play Thursday night against the Giants doesn't bode well for his chances of being active. Saquon Barkley for the Giants has already been was ruled out.
