2021 Outlook
Depth Chart
While the 49ers are content with starting their season under the leadership of veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo, the writing is on the wall that we'll eventually see them make the move to the player they moved up to select at No.3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, North Dakota State's Trey Lance.

Lance was an absolute superstar in his one full season as a starter in college, throwing for an impressive 28 touchdowns while maintaining an absurd zero interceptions that season. Perhaps more importantly for fantasy, though, Lance lit up the highlight reels with his work on the ground as he ran for 1,100 rushing yards as a sophomore and 14 touchdowns. Despite his excellent passing numbers, Lance was not shy to run the ball, as he rushed 169 times in his sole 16 game season as a collegiate starter.

Unlike smaller quarterbacks like Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson, Lance has the size to sustain a bit more of a beating, which could mean even more rushing for him than some expect in the NFL. It's hard to compare any prospect to Josh Allen, but Lance seems to fit that mold more closely than almost any other quarterback in the league right now. He has tremendous upside as a fantasy asset; he possesses a huge arm to go along with excellent athleticism. This is the kind of quarterback that can be a true difference-maker in fantasy, but he has to earn the starting job.

The biggest concern about Lance is that the 49ers seem hell-bent on heading into the season with Garoppolo as their starter. Certainly we've seen teams move on to their young quarterbacks in the past, but it rarely happens unless the team itself is performing poorly or the quarterback is just looking horrible. Considering that the 49ers won six games with the league's most injured roster in 2020, there's a high likelihood that they'll be competitive enough that they end up waiting until deep in the season to turn things over to Lance, if at all this season.

If he does get the chance to play, Lance should be an immediate waiver wire addition in just about any league. His upside is that of a weekly QB1 for fantasy and his legs could carry him to that as soon as right away. This is an offense built for a player like Lance with a dominant rushing attack, some incredible downfield weapons, and some bruising pass catchers who make their money after the catch. The sky is truly the limit for this potential future elite fantasy QB.

Injury Jimmy Garoppolo nursing shoulder injury
HC expects him to practice Wednesday
By: Doug Orth | Tue Jan 18, 12:20 am

San Francisco
QB Jimmy Garoppolo has a "slight shoulder sprain" - his throwing shoulder - but should be able to practice Wednesday, Kyle Shanahan said. (Eric Branch on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Shanahan has been wrong or just plain deceptive when discussing his team's injuries a few times this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if Jimmy G struggles to get a full practice in this week and/or misses the Divisional Round game against the Packers. Either way, fantasy managers and DFS players probably aren't going to use him much anyway. If he sits, rookie Trey Lance would be thrust into the lineup and make for an interesting DFS punt - one with a huge ceiling and a low floor.

Injury Jimmy Garoppolo not expected to play
Trey Lance to start
By: Mike Krueger | Sat Jan 1, 11:20 pm

San Francisco
49ers’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, listed as questionable for Sunday due to a torn UCL in his right thumb, is not expected to Play vs Texans, but 49ers are optimistic he will be able to return for the regular-season finale vs. the Rams, per sources. (Adam Schefter on Twitter)

FFToday's Take: Garoppolo missed practice all week so this news isn't much of a surprise. Trey Lance didn't look good throwing the ball in his only start this season (Week 5 at ARI) going 15-29 for 192 yards and 1 INT. His rushing ability gives him a QB1 ceiling against a weak Houston defense.

Injury Jimmy G remains sidelined Thursday
Dealing with thumb sprain; Trey Lance preparing to start
By: Doug Orth | Thu Dec 30, 9:25 pm

San Francisco
Day 4 of ThumbWatch saw Jimmy Garoppolo miss another practice, casting further doubt on if he’ll start in the 49ers’ home finale Sunday against the Houston Texans. Garoppolo is conditioning on his own, however, and by forgoing surgery, there remains a chance he plays, albeit with his thumb in a brace or heavily taped, as was the case Thursday. Running the show in practice all week has been rookie Trey Lance. (Bay Area News Group - Cam Inman)

FFToday's Take: The moment most fantasy managers expected to happen about two months ago appears to be on the verge of happening now. Lance has reportedly improved by leaps and bounds since his Week 5 start for an injured Garoppolo. There may be no better opponent for Lance to face in his second start than the Texans, and it would be ridiculous for the 49ers to play Garoppolo when it seems obvious he could struggle with his accuracy or make the injury even worse. If Lance gets the nod, he should be considered a low-end QB1 option.
