There was some thought that the Chargers would use the No. 5 overall pick on a receiver. Instead, they drafted OT Joe Alt and waited until Round 2 to address the position, selecting McConkey 34th overall. While he isn't a big target at 6-foot, 186 pounds, McConkey is a physical player that has the toughness to work in traffic and the speed to take the top off defenses. He's considered an advanced route runner as well, and the Bolts believe he can step right in as a rookie and contribute.
Injuries are something of a concern for McConkey, who dealt with back and ankle injuries during his time at Georgia, but the opportunity is there. Thus far in training camp, the first-team receivers have been Palmer, D.J. Chark, and McConkey. It doesn't seem like too big of a stretch to envision the rookie taking over that Keenan Allen role of moving the chains and being a volume target. You can't expect Allen levels of production, of course, but McConkey might have the highest ceiling of any Chargers wideout this year. If you can nab him as your fifth receiver, you might have a WR3 on your hands.

Gametime decision for Ladd McConkey in Week 15 Chargers optimistic he will play By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 15, 2:07 am
| | #Chargers WR Ladd McConkey (knee, shoulder) is listed as questionable and the plan is for him to work out pregame. But sources say the team is optimistic that he can go.
He'll have a real shot to return against the #Bucs. (Ian Rapoport on X)
FFToday's Take: McConkey has been limited in practice all week, just like he was last week before ultimately being ruled out. If he plays, he should be in WR2 territory in a decent matchup against Tampa Bay who is giving up the 9th most fantasy points to wide receivers.
| Justin Herbert expected to play, Ladd McConkey Questionable Herbert practiced in full on Friday By: Mike Krueger | Fri Dec 13, 5:21 pm
| | Justin Herbert (ankle/thigh) was a full participant in practice today and comes off the injury report. Ladd McConkey (shoulder/knee) and Denzel Perryman (groin) were limited today and are questionable. Will Dissly (shoulder) and Jalen Reagor (finger) have been ruled out. (Daniel Popper on X)
FFToday's Take: Herbert is dealing with thigh and ankle injuries this week but is off the injury and expected to play. He's not going to be close to 100 percent so expect his rushing to be limited. McConkey has been limited in practice all week and is listed as Questionable. We should get further clarification on his status later this weekend.
| Ladd McConkey a gametime decision for Week 14 Shoulder, knee injuries for Chargers top wideout By: Mike Krueger | Sun Dec 8, 2:05 am
| | #Chargers WR Ladd McConkey, dealing with an AC joint injury in his shoulder and a sprained knee, is a true game-time decision, sources say. He's listed as questionable and the team hopes to give him right up to 90 minutes before kickoff. (Ian Rapoport on X)
FFToday's Take: Sounds like the Chargers will take it right up to gametime on McConkey who was limited in practice all week. He's likely on the positive side of Questionable but McConkey owners will want to have Plan B in place as the Chargers and Chiefs play Sunday night.
| Ladd McConkey in limbo for Week 14 Knee injury By: Doug Orth | Mon Dec 2, 9:00 pm
| | Jim Harbaugh said that Ladd McConkey (knee) is “working through a couple things” and that the team will evaluate where he’s at as the week progresses.
When asked about the possibility of McConkey practicing this week Harbaugh said, “We’ll see.” (ESPN.com - Kris Rhim)
FFToday's Take: Oh boy. It is rarely ever a good thing for a coach to respond "we'll see" to a question about the likelihood of a player practicing. McConkey did not leave the Chargers' Week 13 win over the Falcons, but it was obvious he was playing in pain at some point. Fantasy managers should prepare to be without McConkey for at least this week. Quentin Johnston and Will Dissly will likely step up into bigger roles if McConkey sits out.
