Live from rural Oklahoma, it’s Tuesday Morning Buzz-time
with recaps of all of the games from Thursday-Monday night. As
always, there’s a lot to chew on so let’s get right
to it!
Indianapolis @ Houston
Often times, Thursday games don’t set the tone for the fantasy
week…or if they do, it’s not a good tone for owners that chose
to start someone on TNF. Not the case here. While Andrew
Luck (370 yards passing, 3 TDs) kept doing what he’s done
all year, he took someone else along for the ride as T.Y.
Hilton broke out to the tune of 200+ yards and a long awaited
TD. Hilton has done this before- that is, had a huge effort and
then gone back to being a single-digit scorer in the weeks that
follow. But, the Buzz is going to project that this is a true
break out game for Hilton and that he’ll be a top ten wide receiver
the rest of the way. Nice to see Andre
Johnson return to form and for those of you who passed on
Arian
Foster in the second round of redrafts…not the right call
obviously.
Is Brady Back? The Patriots QB has turned
in two solid fantasy performances in back-to-back weeks.
New England @ Buffalo
I actually kind of think it’s cool when a team or player proves
critics wrong. And, so it is here at the Buzz where we proclaimed
Tom
Brady to be fantasy irrelevant after four weeks. Brady’s numbers
yesterday (361 yards passing, 4 TDs) were shocking to say the
least and came against a decent pass defense. So, is it time to
re-think Brady’s prognosis? It could be. Guys like Brandon
LaFell, Brian
Tyms, and Tim
Wright (4 TDs on Sunday combined) are giving Brady new targets
to pursue and he’s taking advantage of it the past couple of weeks.
In Buffalo, Sammy Watkins was removed from Sunday’s scoring equation
by Darrelle Revis, so guys like Robert
Woods and Scott
Chandler (100+ rec. yards) had their day. If you’re still
counting on C.J.
Spiller as a RB2, the dream is just about over.
Green Bay @ Miami
It’s worth mentioning again that no one throws to his wide receivers
more than Aaron
Rodgers. Jordy
Nelson and Randall
Cobb both caught touchdowns in this game (again) and the duo
along with rookie Davante
Adams accounted for 20 of Rodgers’s 24 completions on Sunday.
There aren’t safer starts in all of fantasy football at wide receiver
than Nelson and Cobb. Miami did hold Eddie
Lacy in check and Lacy just doesn’t look like the same back
he was in 2013. Meanwhile, Knowshon
Moreno was back for the Dolphins, but Lamar
Miller got the bulk of the work out of the backfield. Finally,
I hope nobody was counting on Brian
Hartline yesterday (0 catches). He appears to have given up
ground to promising rookie Jarvis
Landry (6 rec, 75 yards, 1 TD)
Denver @ N.Y. Jets
The Thomas brothers are officially in full swing. They’re not
actually brothers, of course, but when Peyton
Manning is using them both the way he did on Sunday (14 rec.
175 yards, 3 TDs), they’re the most valuable fantasy football
players at their respective positions. Ronnie
Hillman also filled in nicely against a stingy run defense
running for 100 yards on 24 carries. If/when Montee
Ball does come back, a committee appears likely. Not much
to smile about if you own a Jet on your squad, but rookie Jace
Amaro’s day is worth a mention. Ten catches and a touchdown is
what every owner dreams about from his tight end on Sundays and
Amaro is starting to put the stats together. Thirteen carries,
twenty yards was the stat line for the Jets’ running backs. Yuck.
Carolina @ Cincinnati
Some of the stats from this game were/are a bit inflated because
the teams played five full quarters. But, don’t let that cheapen
the accomplishments of Giovani
Bernard, Mohamed
Sanu, and Cam
Newton. Bernard keeps solidifying his status as a top five
fantasy running back every time he suits it up. Sanu (10 rec,
120 yards, 1 TD) is having a tremendous season as Cincy’s only
real receiving option with Green, Jones, and Eifert out. And Cam
Newton looked like Cam Newton on Sunday for the first time this
season. Having Fozzy
Whittaker as your lead back kind of makes that a necessity
I would suppose. Seventeen carries for 107 yards signals that
Newton is getting over his ailments. I like his prospects moving
forward.
Pittsburgh @ Cleveland
Here’s the truth, plain and simple: Only the Dallas Cowboys run
the ball better than the Cleveland Browns. The Browns’ offensive
line is opening up huge holes for whoever lines up in the backfield
and yesterday it meant double-digit fantasy scoring for both Ben
Tate and Isaiah
Crowell. Adding to that, Jordan
Cameron had his first big game of the season, which I think
most of us knew would come once he got healthy. The Browns dominated
this game even though Brian
Hoyer only completed 8 passes all day. Ben
Roethlisberger, in contrast, threw 42 times, but only finished
with 228 yards passing and 1 TD as a result. Antonio
Brown and Le’Veon Bell remain as consistent performers at
their positions as you will find, but the Steelers aren’t finding
the end zone enough to maximize their talents.
Jacksonville @ Tennessee
Sometimes, you’ve gotta work hard to make a game seem exciting
from a fantasy (or reality) standpoint. Such is the case here
as Blake
Bortles did put up some good fantasy numbers throwing to the
likes of Cecil
Shorts (10 rec, 103 yards) and Clay
Harbor (91 yards, 1 TD). The stars were aligned for Bishop
Sankey to become the star many thought he would be, but after
61 yards on 18 carries and no TDs vs. the Jaguars, optimism surrounding
Sankey moving forward is low. Bortles remains an intriguing dynasty
prospect, as does Justin
Hunter. Other than that, the takeaway from this game isn’t
much at all.
Detroit @ Minnesota
I know Minnesota is young, but man, that Detroit defense is starting
to get nasty. I would think twice before marching anybody out
there against them at this point. Matthew
Stafford continued to show the ill effects of missing Calvin
Johnson (and Reggie
Bush to a lesser extent) and I would sit him on the bench
until Johnson is 100 percent again. One thing that did happen
for the Vikings (besides getting beat down) was an apparent changing
of the guard at running back. Jerick
McKinnon had 17 touches to Matt Asiats’s 3. McKinnon should
garner better totals moving forward versus weaker defenses and
there’s little doubt that he’s the emerging player in Minnesota.
Now, if only Cordarrelle
Patterson could re-emerge…
Baltimore @ Tampa Bay
Is there any player more difficult to figure out than the multiple-personality
signal caller of the Ravens? You can’t start Joe
Flacco from week-to-week because he can put up some poor stat
lines on a regular basis. Or, he can throw 4 TDs…in one quarter.
One thing’s for sure by now: start everybody versus the Buccaneers.
The fact that the Bucs are on bye next week means fantasy scoring
will be down for one week. And, no matter who they’re facing,
I just don’t think Steve
Smith and Justin
Forsett are going away. The loss of Dennis
Pitta for the season is sending most of his targets towards
Smith and Forsett out of the backfield. Both guys are candidates
for the biggest surprise of the fantasy season through six weeks.
San Diego @ Oakland
Well, if that’s what Oakland is going to look like with Dennis
Allen out of the picture, then sign me up for a few Raiders. Derek
Carr (4 TDs) and Andre
Holmes (121 yards, 2 TDs) were stars on Sunday against a defense
that had shut out the Jets just a week before. And, Darren
McFadden ran for nearly six yards a carry. Better yet, we’re
six weeks into the season and McFadden is still upright! San Diego
did come back to win this game courtesy of Philip
Rivers (313 yards, 3 TDs), Branden
Oliver ( 124 total yards, 1 TD), and Malcom
Floyd (103 rec. yards, 1 TD). Aside from the enigmatic Keenan
Allen, everybody is contributing in San Diego right now and
Oliver may keep his lead back job even when Ryan Mathews returns.
Rivers continues to be one of your draft day’s biggest steals.
Dallas @ Seattle
As was noted earlier, the Cowboys can flat out run the ball…on
anybody. DeMarco
Murray must now be considered completely matchup-proof as
he continues to lay claim to fantasy football’s first semester
MVP award with six weeks in the books. Seattle couldn’t stop Murray
and even allowed a rare Jason
Witten touchdown to occur. Running Marshawn
Lynch ten times is inexcusable. For those upset with Lynch’s
performance on Sunday, keep in mind that Marshawn did gain 6.1
yards every time he ran the ball. His low production is 100 percent
on his coaches. And, it’s time to pull Percy
Harvin out of lineups unless he’s your flex starter. That
stat line yesterday (3 rec, 0 yds; 3 rush, -1 yd) was likely a
score-killer for many a fantasy owner.
Washington @ Arizona
What a difference having the right quarterback under center can
make. With Carson
Palmer back in the fold Sunday, Larry
Fitzgerald and Michael
Floyd suddenly became fantasy relevant again as each caught
a touchdown pass. Assuming Palmer can stay healthy, he’s an outstanding
option moving forward with Fitz, Floyd, exciting rookie John
Brown, and Andre
Ellington out of the backfield to throw to. Meanwhile, if
DeSean
Jackson’s purpose for playing this season was to show the
Eagles he could still be great, his last few weeks have brought
success (115 yards, 1 TD on Sunday). With defenses also having
to account for Pierre
Garcon and Jordan Reed, Jackson should continue to make big
plays keeping the value of Kirk
Cousins high as well.
Chicago @ Atlanta
Matt
Ryan is supposed to be an all-world fantasy quarterback at
home, but it didn’t translate that way Sunday leaving many fantasy
owners disappointed. The lack of passing prowess also killed the
value of Julio
Jones and Roddy
White in what appeared to be a dream matchup for both. Instead,
the Falcons couldn’t get the Bears off the field and couldn’t
stop Jay
Cutler (381 yards passing) and Matt
Forte ( 157 yards, 2 TDs). If you drafted Cutler or Rivers
in the middle rounds of your redraft in August, you might just
be in first place right now. And, if you’ve got Matt Forte, I
think only DeMarco Murray is more valuable commodity moving forward.
To round out this heap of praise upon Bears offensive skill position
players, consider that Alshon Jeffery and Brandon
Marshall combined for 249 receiving yards Sunday. With respect
to the Bears and fantasy football, it’s all good…all the time.
N.Y. Giants @ Philadelphia
For a second consecutive week, a New York football team got shut
out on Sunday leaving fantasy owners wondering if they can trust
a Jet or a Giant moving forward. The biggest sigh of relief from
fantasy owners collectively came in the form of LeSean
McCoy rushing for 149 yards. McCoy’s return to form couldn’t
have come at a better time as he should be one of fantasy football’s
top three running backs moving forward following his Week Seven
bye. Zach
Ertz remains elite as a pass receiver, but until he learns
to block better, he’ll only be seeing less than 50% of the offensive
snaps in Philly. And, those looking to Victor Cruz (knee) as a
viable weekly start will now have to begin looking elsewhere.
Maybe Rueben
Randle Randle and Odell
Beckham Jr. can step up and fill the void along with the suddenly
invisible Larry Donnell.
San Francisco @ St. Louis
Some things to be excited about and some things to be concerned
about coming out of Monday night’s game depending on what player
you own. If it’s Colin
Kaepernick you’re counting on, you were no doubt elated to
see him absolutely shred an admittedly poor defense to the tune
of 343 yards passing and 3 TDs. But, if you were counting on Zac
Stacy as your steady RB2 for the season, you better be very
concerned. Tre
Mason looked better than Stacy as did Benny
Cunningham at the goaline early in the game. Back to Kaepernick…I
get the impression that big things are ahead. He was able to hit
three different receivers for touchdowns (Crabtree, Lloyd, and
Boldin) in addition to rushing for 37 yards. If that continues,
however, the value of Frank
Gore and Carlos
Hyde will drop. QB and RB success in San Francisco tends to
be mutually exclusive.
That’s it for the Buzz for Week Six! Looking forward to
breaking down all the action that is sure to happen in Week Seven.
Until then…
