It’s Week 2 - annually the week in which the most injuries
per capita occur. Sadly, 2016 proved to be another verse of that
same song. Still, I refuse to make injuries the first of our “ten
things” this week…
All he does is score touchdowns. Eric Decker
and Co. found the endzone four times against the Bills.
These Jets Sure Can Fly
In the world of fantasy football, we are all guilty at times of
holding on to our perceptions for too long. NFL does stand for
“Not For Long” as many have opined over the years. And along that
line of thinking comes the 2016 New York Jets. If you had asked
anyone before the season, which five offenses will dazzle in 2016,
few would have suggested the Jets. But, Thursday night’s game
was more proof that the Jets are loaded on the offensive side
of the ball. Quincy
Enunwa has now caught 13 passes through two weeks for 146
yards and a TD. And, he’s the third option when Ryan
Fitzpatrick is looking to pass. Eric
Decker and Brandon
Marshall command so much attention from opposing defenses
that Enunwa is fantasy-relevant week in and week out. Decker was
sterling on Thursday with 120-plus yards and yet another TD. And,
how about Matt
Forte? Surely, that will be his only 3-TD game of the season,
but you can’t ignore the volume and production - 59 touches in
two weeks is both encouraging and concerning if you’re a Forte
owner, but the bottom line is that you can’t load up the box to
stop Forte with such potent receivers spread out wide. This is
truly an offense on the rise and one to latch onto if the offer
is right.
The Injury Bug Peaks in Week 2…Again
Week 2 is a weekend to cross your fingers year in and year out
in terms of injuries. This year, running backs were hardest hit
with Adrian
Peterson, Ameer
Abdullah, Arian
Foster, Danny
Woodhead, Jonathan
Stewart, and Thomas
Rawls all knocked out early with injuries that could linger.
In Woodhead's case, the injury was season-ending. There were also
a couple of significant QB injuries, more on that below. The injuries
underscore the importance of both RB depth and handcuffing. For
example, Matt Forte owners: get Bilal
Powell this week. Protect yourself. I’ll leave it to the waiver
wire experts to inform you on the optimal free agent pick-ups
based on the injury list above. I’m just telling you to prepare
for the worst at the position…even in times of plenty.
Before and After in New England and
Cleveland
No two teams came out of the gates hotter on Sunday than the Patriots
and Browns. Before it was even 2:00 pm Eastern time, Corey
Coleman and Danny
Amendola had multiple touchdowns and Isaiah
Crowell was threatening to amass rarified totals on the ground.
Martellus
Bennett was doing his best Gronk impersonation. Then, Jimmy
Garoppolo went down with a shoulder injury and Josh
McCown tried to play through a separated shoulder. Suddenly,
the fortunes of both teams changed. Coleman is most hurt by McCown’s
injury as he was looking like a potential fantasy star…and now,
his QB for the immediate future could be rookie Cody
Kessler. Coleman is still a great dynasty grab, but his value
rises and falls with the health of McCown. In Isaiah Crowell’s
rise may have some staying power in spite of the QB change as
Hue Jackson has a history of getting the most out of his running
backs. Then again, it’s hard for any RB to excel with 8 or 9 defenders
in the box. New England is in a similar situation, having to rely
on a virtual unknown (Jacoby
Brissett) for the next two weeks. Tom Brady will then return,
but until he does, the only Patriot who is a sure fire starter
is LeGarrette
Blount. Blount is actually a great sell-high candidate, but
not before Brady comes back.
Surefire Sophomores on the Rise
We saw flashes of Stefon
Diggs’ potential around mid-season of 2015, but what we’ve
witnessed through two weeks this year suggests he’s in the midst
of a breakout season. Diggs absolutely set fire to the Green Bay
defense Sunday night to the tune of 182 yards and a TD on 9 receptions.
He led many a fantasy owner to dramatic comeback victories provided
you had him in your lineup. The Vikings drafted Laquon
Treadwell to grow into being their No.1 WR, but at this point,
Diggs is assuming that role and then some. With the Vikings struggling
to move the ball on the ground, look for Diggs to be a focal point
of the offense, especially with Sam
Bradford under center. The other sophomore whose stock is
soaring is running back Melvin
Gordon. Even with Danny
Woodhead healthy, Gordon looked like a different player two
weeks with 177 yards from scrimmage and 3 TDs. Now, with Woodhead
out for the season, Gordon is a low-end RB1 for the foreseeable
future. Diggs and Gordon owners, rejoice! You may have the two
biggest draft steals of 2016.
The Showdown that Wasn’t
Antonio
Brown vs. A.J.
Green was supposed to be epic. After all, Brown and Green
combined for 306 receiving yards and 3 TDs in Week 1 and many
thought they were primed for similar numbers in a shoot-out game
on Sunday. Never happened. As it was, Green and Brown were out-scored
by the likes of Tyler
Boyd and TE Xavier
Grimble (if you had him on your radar, you should be writing
this article). The Bengals shut down Brandon
Marshall in Week 1, so perhaps it was just wrong place, wrong
time for Brown. But, Green should have fared better against a
defense that gave up 100-plus yards to DeSean
Jackson in Week 1. The Bengals and Steelers play again in
Week 15 during the fantasy playoff season. Here’s hoping owners
relying on either or both to win fantasy championships get better
output from their star(s) at that time.
Has Matt Ryan Re-Discovered his Fantasy
Value?
I don’t want to answer that question with a no, since Ryan has
played very well through two contests (730 passing yards, 5 TDs)…but
I will say to exercise caution when assessing his value. Ryan
has played against two very soft pass defenses (Tampa Bay, Oakland)
and gets another this week when the Falcons travel to New Orleans
to play the Saints. Beyond that, the schedule gets exponentially
tougher with games against Carolina, Denver, and Seattle next
up on the docket. Much like Blount, there will be a sell-high
point coming up for Ryan and that time is after Week 3. For what
it’s worth and in Ryan’s defense, if you’re not starting him vs.
the Saints this upcoming weekend, you are out of your fantasy
mind. The numbers coming out of New Orleans this week are going
to be staggering.
The Curse of the Running Back is Alive
and Well
The words RB and bust were almost synonymous in 2015 with so many
top ten picks at the position failing to meet expectations. 2016
is looking very much the same thus far with DeAngelo
Williams being the only RB to really put up true “stud” numbers
through two weeks. Todd
Gurley hasn’t even run for 100 yards combined and his team
hasn’t even scored a TD yet. Adrian
Peterson was awful production-wise, prior to his injury on
Sunday night. Lamar
Miller is getting the touches, but has yet to find the end
zone or break off a run longer than 12 yards. Thomas
Rawls is struggling to even net positive yards. Doug
Martin is hurt. Eddie
Lacy is producing like 2015, and Mark
Ingram has been an afterthought in the New Orleans offense.
And, that doesn’t even cover guys like Jamaal
Charles whose season isn’t even off the ground yet. The Zero
RB strategists are licking their chops. It looks like it will
be up to Le’Veon
Bell and David
Johnson to refute the proclamations that Stud RB theory is
dead and buried.
It’s all about the Benjamins
On a more positive note, both Kelvin
Benjamin (7-108-2) and Travis
Benjamin (6-115-2) put up huge numbers on Sunday, signaling
that both are ready to be week-in, week-out fantasy contributors
in 2016. Kelvin’s resurgence has been a pleasant surprise given
the uncertainty surrounding his status during the preseason. Travis
showed flashes in 2015 but was thought to be third fiddle in an
offense that was set to grant 200 combined receptions to Keenan
Allen and Danny Woodhead. With both guys gone, look for Travis
to be a target monster going forward. As they say, Stock up on
K & T.
Scoreless in Seattle
Considering San Francisco lit up the Rams defense for four touchdowns
in Week 1, owners of Seattle skill position players had to be
licking their chops coming into Week 2. In an era where defenses
are hard-pressed to slow down high octane offenses, the Seahawks
managed one field goal in 60 minutes of action. Russell
Wilson was playing at less than 100% but the offensive line
play in Seattle should have Wilson owners concerned. Seattle found
a rhythm towards the end of last season that propelled Wilson
and Doug
Baldwin to lofty draft positions, but Sunday, those days seemed
far away. Can Seattle rebound? With Christine
Michael averaging over 5 yards every time he carries the ball,
it might be time to make him a bigger part of the offense. Also,
increased production from Tyler Lockett (99 yards receiving) and
Jimmy
Graham (42 yards, 82% of the offensive snaps) signals more
positive energy in the passing game moving forward. If you're
depending on a Seahawk, don't jump ship just yet.
Took You Long Enough…
It seemed like Philadelphia was never going to give the ball to
Ryan
Mathews on Monday night. Mathews had only three carries for
less than 10 yards going into the fourth quarter. He finished
the night with only nine carries, which is baffling given how
well he ran it when given the opportunity. But, two of those six
carries in the fourth quarter resulted in touchdowns meaning a
budding disaster turned into a productive evening. We'll call
it the Blake
Bortles Syndrome. That is, it doesn't matter how you do for
three quarters if the fourth quarter brings about fantasy salvation.
Here's hoping Mathews owners didn't turn off the TV after three
quarters in disgust.
That's a wrap for the Buzz for this week. Here's hoping for fewer
injuries in Week 3 and better RB production. Until then...
