In these explanations, we also begin to craft the language of rules. A major and often overlooked, tool in league creation is the power of a simple list of strong term definitions. Use those terms through the body of your document. This technique will focus the document and make it easier to translate concepts.

Assembly, The
all owners of teams excluding the Commish.

Auction
any draft or free agency where bids are placed.

Big Money Leagues
how much it cost to be in the game? If the entry fee and any game charges exceed $99, it makes this category.

Commish, The
the one everyone relies on.

Distance Bonus
scoring systems that give more value based on the distance of the play.

Double Blind System
method of commissioning where the Commish submits lineups per deadlines to a designated member of the Assembly. Builds trust and generally recommended especially amongst cyber-leagues.

Dynasty League
60% or more of total roster is retained between seasons. Dynasty leagues feature long term team rosters. Dynasty leagues are also retention leagues (macro title).

Escalator Clauses
game design elements to increase the cost of keeping a player or outright limits on how long a player is retained.

Global League
one or more members are only in cyber contact

Keeper Leagues
players are retained between seasons with less players than required to be classified a Dynasty League. Keeper leagues are also retention leagues (macro title).

Local League
members all are in physical contact

Lotto
any draft or free agency where placement is ordered by a randomly determined method.

Newbie
anyone with 3 or less years of following or participating in fantasy football.

Open Formation
where any roster (team or starting) has variable position slots.

Redraft Leagues
no player retention between seasons

Retention Leagues
any system where players are retained between seasons.

Retention Points System
Each team has a set number of points to keep members of the previous year's roster. Escalator clauses include increasing the points to retain players on the number of seasons kept (i.e. 1 pt first time, 2 pts second time, 3 pts third time and so on...), as one example.

Reverse Standings
a process where a team is granted access to either a free agent pickup, waiver wire or a draft pick in reverse standings to the win/loss record. This method gives the weaker teams first access in the theory that better access will balance the league in the end.

Static Formations
where any roster (team or starting) has predetermined position slots

Description in League-al-ese:

League #1
Local redraft lotto league with D/STs, static formations (2 RB, 2 WR 1 TE) and reverse standings free agency. Exotics: Distance Bonus. This league can be run out of a Monday/Tuesday newspaper.

League #2
A cyber keeper lotto league with independent Defense and Special teams, open formations, reverse standings free agency and lotto redraft. Exotics: Retention Points System. They are like blades of grass across the Internet and this is just one flavor.

League #3
A Big Money Local Dynasty Auction League with open formations, no defense or special teams. Exotics: Salary Caps, Escalators, Return Yards and Mid-Season Reauction. It is only for the hard core.
