Welcome to the final edition of TMB for the month of November!
If you keep playing well into December you just might contend
for a fantasy football championship. You’ll probably be
looking at lots of predictive articles beginning this week, so
why spend time here on a recap of what has already taken place?
Because unless you understand the recent past, you’ll struggle
to predict the future. We’re off and running…
Kansas City @ Oakland
Star of the Game: Latavius
Murray. Talk about making the most of four carries (112 yards,
2 TDs). As long as Murray can pass through the leagues’ concussion
protocol, Murray should be the focal point of the Oakland offense
moving forward. The question: Is focal point in Oakland enough
to draw fantasy consideration?
Goat of the Game: Kansas City wide
receivers. Eleven games, no touchdowns. I don’t know whether to
pin that on Alex
Smith or the receiving group. They’re paying Dwayne
Bowe a lot for stat lines like this: 3-42-0.
Final thought: Has there ever been
a Thursday night game with less fantasy impact than this one?
Aside from Charles (who was solid), this game represented a vast
wasteland of fantasy potential.
Jacksonville @ Indianapolis
Star of the Game: T.Y.
Hilton. Hilton welcomed a daughter into the world and then
went out and accounted for 137 total yards and a TD on five touches.
Hilton continues to be Indy’s one real “weapon” if you will and
Luck isn’t likely to forget about him as we move into December.
Goat of the Game: Reggie
Wayne and/or Denard
Robinson. It’s unfair to be too tough on Robinson as he’s
generally exceeded expectations over the past six weeks. As for
Wayne, averaging 3.3 yards per catch isn’t the stuff fantasy-relevant
wide receivers are made of.
Final thought: Without Ahmad
Bradshaw, the Colts are missing a true red zone threat and
may struggle to score TDs in the weeks to come. Adam
Vinatieri is going to be kicking a lot of field goals as a
result and Andrew
Luck’s production could take a hit.
Detroit @ New England
Star of the Game: Pick a Patriot.
Tom
Brady threw for 349 yards. PPR-leaguers were rewarded with
11 catches for Julian
Edelman, 9 for Brandon
LaFell, and 8 for Shane
Vereen. Even “backups” LeGarrette
Blount and Tim
Wright had huge days (4 TDs combined).
Goat of the Game: Bill Belichick.
Can’t give this distinction to Jonas
Gray as you have to actually play in a game to become a Goat.
For those counting on Gray Sunday, Belichick’s decision to bench
him for an entire game was season-altering for some. Matthew
Stafford’s zero touchdown day also warrants some consideration.
Final thought: The Patriot offense
is a machine at home. They can pound it down your throat and spread
it wide and kill you with precision. It’s just difficult to guess
which they’ll attempt to do.
Delanie Walker rewarded his fantasy owners
with 155 yards on Sunday... 3rd amongst TEs in Week 12.
Tennessee @ Philadelphia
Star of the Game: Delanie
Walker. On a week that saw most tight ends fall silent in
the scoring column, Walker’s 5 catches for 155 yards really stood
out. LeSean
McCoy deserves mention as well for having his best game of
the season. Too bad he doesn’t play the Titans every week.
Goat of the Game: Bishop
Sankey. Although, if you were counting on him at this point
in your season, I feel sorry for you. It means you haven’t worked
the waiver wire very hard. Jeremy Maclin also posted substandard
stat line for him, but it’s hard to be down on a guy that’s been
so good for most of the year.
Final thought: Again, it would be
easy to get excited about McCoy after this game, but his remaining
matchups and recent history suggest caution is in order.
Tampa Bay @ Chicago
Star of the Game: Matt
Forte. Truly one of most underrated backs of his generation,
Forte netted 112 yards from scrimmage and scored two TDs. This,
despite the passing game never getting off the ground, which brings
us to…
Goat of the Game: Jay
Cutler/Brandon
Marshall. The hot then cold pattern continues for Cutler with
Marshall’s production very much coinciding with Jay’s. I would
throw Alshon
Jeffery in for good measure, but a second-half TD salvaged
his day…at least somewhat.
Final thought: The Bucs’ offense
is showing signs of life through the air. Having Mike
Evans (another TD) and Vincent
Jackson (117 yards) helps, but even Louis
Murphy is finding his groove with talent flanking him on both
sides. Josh
McCown is worth rostering for now to be sure.
Green Bay @ Minnesota
Star of the Game: Eddie
Lacy. Absolute no-brainer. Lacy’s yardage totals continue
to climb with a season-high 125 yards on the ground in this game
and he also found the end zone yet again as a receiver. Much like
2013, Lacy may be a key component for many championship runs in
December.
Goat of the Game: Green Bay’s wide
receivers. No, they weren’t awful, but zero receiving touchdowns
and less than 70 yards apiece made for the quietest of days for
the superstar duo of Nelson and Cobb.
Final thought: Nice to see Kyle
Rudolph back on the field and producing. With impact tight
ends few and far between, Rudolph could be just that down the
stretch this season as Teddy
Bridgewater’s most reliable target.
Cleveland @ Atlanta
Star of the Game: Josh
Gordon. Isaiah
Crowell probably deserves the distinction given his production
(2 TDs), but Gordon’s insertion back into the fantasy world was
the bigger story. 8 catches and 120 yards later, Gordon signaled
to everyone that he’ll be a factor over the course of the next
five weeks. Opponents beware.
Goat of the Game: No one? Nobody
really underperformed so to speak as Roddy
White caught lots of passes (9), Steven
Jackson and Julio Jones scored TDs, and Brian
Hoyer and Matt
Ryan were productive from the pocket (minus Hoyer’s three
INTs). Hard to find fault with anything that took place given
the modest expectations carried into the contest.
Final thought: With Gordon back
in the fold, the Browns could be a fantasy force on offense moving
forward. Gordon stretches the field and makes defenses pay attention.
That should mean good numbers for guys like Crowell, Terrance
West, and Andrew
Hawkins, too.
Cincinnati @ Houston
Star of the Game: Jeremy
Hill/A.J.
Green. Ever since the debacle two weeks ago vs. the Browns,
the Bengals have looked like a new team on offense and these two
are the centerpieces. Hill scored another TD on the ground to
go with 87 rushing yards. Green caught a dozen passes for 121.
It’s a combo that has to stay in lineups in the weeks to come.
Goat of the Game: Pick a Texan.
Ryan
Mallett’s pregame injury threw the entire offense out of whack
and led to poor days from Alfred
Blue and DeAndre
Hopkins as well as the same old, same old from Andre
Johnson.
Final thought: Hill and Giovani
Bernard each had 19 touches in this game. Looks like a 50/50
split going forward with Hill getting goal line duties.
St. Louis @ San Diego
Star of the Game: Keenan
Allen. Allen has been a huge disappointment this season after
such a promising rookie campaign, but Sunday’s stat line looked
like the Allen of 2013 (6-104-1). Honorable mention goes to Stedman
Bailey for St. Louis. Bailey scored 21.9 points using standard
PPR measures. Who saw that coming?
Goat of the Game: Antonio
Gates. I guess one man’s success in the San Diego passing
game will almost always equal another man’s failure to produce.
Is Gates doing the slow fade like he did in 2013? Could be.
Final thought: Ryan
Mathews’ whole career can be summed up by what happened on
Sunday. He ran for a 32-yard TD, but was hurt on the play and
missed time as a result. So much potential, but so risky with
injuries lurking around every corner.
Arizona @ Seattle
Star of the Game: Steve
Hauschka. Well, who would you have picked? In the land of
the blind, the one-eyed man is king. There wasn’t much to write
home about offensively in this game. Russell
Wilson was decent as the game’s leading rusher (73 yards).
Goat of the Game: Michael
Floyd. If the Star/Goat thing was our normal format, it wouldn’t
be Floyd’s first designation to be sure. His disappointing season
just seems to be compounded every other week with an absolute
stinker. As in zero catches.
Final thought: Seattle’s defense
played with desperation and intensity. If I was vying for a fantasy
championship next month, it’s a defense I would try to avoid.
Miami @ Denver
Star of the Game: C.J.
Anderson. In a game full of offensive stars, Anderson’s incredible
day on the ground vs. one of the league’s best defenses stands
out the most. 195 yards from scrimmage and a TD was just tremendous.
Any other week, we’d be locked in on Demaryius
Thomas’s 3 TDs or Ryan
Tannehill’s great all-around performance. So much to pick
from here.
Goat of the Game: Jacob
Tamme. So much for a “sneaky good” start with Julius
Thomas out. Those who plugged Tamme in hoping for Thomas-like
production got soundly burned.
Final thought: As if the amazing
rookie WR class of 2014 needed any more dynamic members, Jarvis
Landry has joined the fray. Landry has three TDs over the
last two weeks and seems to be getting more and more involved
in the Dolphins’ offense as time goes by.
Washington @ San Francisco
Star of the Game: Anquan
Boldin/Alfred
Morris. In a game otherwise void of offensive firepower, both
Boldin and Morris delivered. Boldin continues to be the 49ers
primary receiving threat while Morris is Washington’s one true
fantasy star. The two combined for 267 yards from scrimmage and
2 TDs. That’s pretty salty.
Goat of the Game: Multiple Candidates.
From Frank
Gore and DeSean Jackson’s disappearing acts to Pierre
Garcon and Vernon Davis’ ongoing struggles to the ineptitude
of Robert Griffin III, this game had plenty of disappointment
to go around.
Final thought: Where would the 49ers
offense be this season without Boldin? The Niners are winning
ugly and playing very poor offensive football except where Boldin
is concerned.
Dallas @ NY Giants
Star of the Game: Odell
Beckham Jr. It was difficult picking a single star in most
of these games, but in this game, the choice was easy. What a
game for Beckham. A catch for the ages, nine additional catches,
146 yards, and 2 TDs. Beckham’s star isn’t just on the rise…it’s
rocketing upward. Beckham was so good on Sunday night that Dez
Bryant’s outstanding game (7-86-2) got overshadowed.
Goat of the Game: Larry
Donnell. Offense was the order of the day in this game with
Donnell being the only real exception to that with only 24 yards
on 2 catches.
Final thought: Beckham has enough
talent to carry Eli
Manning to some decent fantasy numbers next month and beyond.
Keep that in mind as you look at quarterbacks to start in Weeks
13-16.
NY Jets vs. Buffalo
Star of the Game: Robert
Woods. If Woods can produce the way he did last night on a
regular basis, Buffalo could be set at the WR position for quite
some time with Sammy
Watkins also in the fold. Nine catches for 118 yards and a
TD sounds like something Watkins would do. But, those were Woods’s
numbers last night…
Goat of the Game: Michael
Vick. I doubt many (if any) were counting on Vick last night
to produce, but it’s becoming clear that his career is just about
over. The Jets’ offense is bad and the whole unit needs an overhaul
or change in leadership or both.
Final thought: With Fred
Jackson back in the mix, Buffalo employed the three-headed
monster at running back again this week. It’s a good NFL strategy,
but makes fantasy owners cringe from the lack of continuity from
week to week.
Baltimore @ New Orleans
Star of the Game: Justin
Forsett. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2014 season thus
far has been Forsett. 190 total yards and 2 TDs cement that status
and then some. The transformation of the Ravens running game after
an awful 2013 has been shocking to say the least.
Goat of the Game: Mark
Ingram. After a month of big performances, Ingram came crashing
back to earth on Monday night, totaling only 42 total yards on
13 touches.
Final thought: If the Saints defense
is going to look that bad from here on out, expect some ridiculous
yardage totals from Drew
Brees. 420 yards passing and 3 TDs is vintage Brees from a
fantasy standpoint. Too bad his team is so bad on the other side
of the ball.
That’s a wrap on the Buzz for this week. Hope you enjoy
a terrific Thanksgiving holiday with the people that you love
the most. Thank you for making the Buzz a part of your weekly
intake of fantasy football information. It’s a pleasure
to bring it to you. Until next week…
