Predicted Score: Jaguars 20, Texans 13
Jacksonville: After a couple of impressive wins on the road against AFC West teams (Denver, Kansas City) the Jaguars look to make it four in a row against Houston, a team that beat Jacksonville twice last season. Propelling the Jags to their 3-1 start has been their defense which ranks 2nd in points allowed (10.2), 7th against the pass, and 15th against the run (inflated by a huge week 1 performance by LenDale White and Chris Brown of Tennessee). Quarterback David Garrard has been steady, not flashy, and continues to play error-free football with zero interceptions. Maurice Jones-Drew finally hit a long run (52 yds) last week against KC, finishing the day with 112 total yards and 1 score. Pounding the run and playing defense will be the flavor of the day and should be enough to hold off the Texans. Who knows, perhaps Fred Taylor will find the endzone…?
- Start: RB Maurice Jones-Drew, RB Fred Taylor, Jaguars D/ST
- Consider: QB David Garrard, TE Marcedes Lewis
- Sit: WR Dennis Northcutt, WR Ernest Wilford, WR Matt Jones, K Josh Scobee (inj.)
Houston: Since Ahman Green left the starting lineup; the Texans have been living dangerously with a sluggish running game and barely won on a last second field goal against the lowly Miami Dolphins. Houston has averaged less than 70 yards on the ground per game but may get a boost as Green has been practicing this week and is expected to return. However, wide receiver Andre Johnson (knee) sat out of practice on Wednesday and appears will need another week on the bench to fully heal. Andre Davis and tight end Owen Daniels have picked up the slack in Johnson's absence. Daniels has at least 50 yards receiving the last four weeks.
- Start: TE Owen Daniels, WR Andre Davis
- Consider: QB Matt Schaub, RB Ahman Green
- Sit: WR Andre Johnson WR Jacoby Jones, RB Ron Dayne
